"I will wait till August 15. If there is no change or course correction in the district leadership, I have no option but to listen to the people, both Muslims and some Hindus, who are urging me to chart an alternative path," Kabir,
TMC MLA
from Bharatpur in Murshidabad district told reporters.
He also indicated that the formation of a Muslim-majority regional party could alter equations in Murshidabad, Malda, North Dinajpur, and parts of Nadia and South Dinajpur districts.
"There will not be just one Humayun Kabir, there will be many," he said, suggesting his new platform may attract disgruntled TMC elements and community leaders.
Live Events
Kabir, a former Congress and BJP member who has frequently courted controversy within the TMC, said his new party would officially launch on January 1, 2026, and contest 50 to 52 seats across Bengal, primarily targeting the minority-dominated belts.
Issuing a sharp rebuttal, TMC state vice-president Joyprakash Majumdar dismissed the "August 15 deadline" as a stunt.
"If he wants to float a new party, no one is stopping him. But first, he must resign. The party doesn't care for self-imposed deadlines. He can leave tomorrow if he wants," Majumdar said, adding that Kabir had already been show-caused multiple times and warned for breaching party discipline.
"A party has rules. If you want to stay, follow them. Otherwise, the road is open," Majumdar said pointedly.
Kabir, however, appeared unshaken.
"If I am forced to do this, I will not only win my seat, but several of my colleagues will also win. And when we do, we will negotiate with
Mamata Banerjee
from a position of strength," he said, hinting at post-poll bargaining in case of a fractured mandate in 2026.
Kabir's rebellion has drawn sharp reactions from the opposition.
"He has no credibility. He has made tall claims before and done nothing. His effigies are being burnt in his own constituency. TMC workers are throwing shoes at his posters. Let him act first, then we'll talk," BJP leader Rahul Sinha said.
Sujan Chakraborty, CPI(M) central committee member, also ridiculed Kabir's political flip-flops.
"He has been in Congress, then BJP, then TMC, back to Congress, and again TMC. Now he's talking about a new party? This is not politics, it's opportunistic deal-making," Chakraborty said.
"He says he is with Mamata Banerjee and also
Abhishek Banerjee
. So, if he is with both, then who is he rebelling against? This is just bargaining before ticket distribution," Chakraborty quipped.
Kabir's latest salvo comes at a time when Mamata Banerjee is working to consolidate her minority vote base amid growing discontent and visible cracks in the TMC's organisational structure in north Bengal.
Murshidabad, Malda and parts of Dinajpur account for a large chunk of Muslim voters, often seen as the TMC's reliable electoral base.
A breakaway faction led by a prominent Muslim leader could create vote splits in multi-cornered contests, especially if the BJP and the Left-Congress alliance manage to retain their footholds.
Kabir, however, clarified he has "no personal animosity" toward Mamata Banerjee or Abhishek Banerjee.
"My fight is with the district-level leaders who are corrupt and autocratic," he said, echoing the complaints of several disgruntled leaders within the party's lower rungs.
Political observers say Kabir's gambit is a high-risk, high-return strategy. His ability to wean away TMC votes depends largely on his organisational muscle in Murshidabad and whether his proposed platform can gain traction beyond local discontent.
However, his checkered past, shifting loyalties between Congress, BJP, and TMC, may work against him, as critics label him untrustworthy and politically restless.

Delhi Police Reject Mamata Banerjees Linguistic Terror Charge; Says Video Shared By CM Fabricated, Baseless

A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared a video of a woman on X claiming that the lady and her child were subjected to brutality only because they speak Bengali, the Delhi Police has now come up with a rebuttal, saying that the video was fabricated on the demand of a TMC politician. DCP East Delhi, Abhishek Dhania, said that the Delhi Police took cognisance of the video posted by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on 'X' where she claimed that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child were assaulted by the Delhi Police. "Right after receiving the information, we initiated the inquiry and discovered that the lady's name is Sanjanu Parveen... During the interrogation, she said that on 26th July, around 10:30 pm, four policemen who were in their civil clothes came to their house and took them away to a secluded area where they beat them up and demanded Rs. 25,000 from them, which they gave them," said the DCP. Elaborating on the investigation, DCP East Dhania said, "Understanding the seriousness of the situation, we have formed multiple teams since last night. Based on technical and local intelligence, as well as CCTV footage, we have gathered various evidence. Based on that evidence, we found out that the whole story told by this lady is the interrogation, she mentioned that her relative, who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal, is a political worker, and on his request, she made this baseless video and shared it with him." According to Delhi Police, the woman shared the video with her relative, who later circulated the video in the local media of Bengal. "After a thorough investigation and inquiry, we have concluded that the entire video is baseless and fabricated. This video has been deliberately circulated on social media to tarnish the image of the Delhi Police. Further investigation is still going on," said the Delhi Police. Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by the BJP in the country against the Bengalis! Where are they taking our country now?"

When Rajinikanth brought down a state govt, its CM after getting stuck in a traffic snarl; his campaign led to her party's landslide defeat in next election

How much can a traffic snarl cost? Wait, traffic snarls can be bought? No, that's not what we meant. Let us rephrase: how much loss can a traffic snarl cause? Still sounds like a vague, hypothetical question, right? But what if we told you that one traffic jam cost a top politician the Chief Minister's office and her party's incumbency in a state? No, this isn't a joke. And yes, it happened in India. While the traffic snarl wasn't the only reason behind the neta's downfall, many believe that day marked the beginning of the end of her regime. It was 1992, and it had only been just a year since All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader J Jayalalithaa became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It was her first tenure and also the first time that the party had come to power since its founder and incumbent CM, MG Ramachandran, passed away in 1987. Although the AIADMK alliance gained power by winning 225 out of the total 234 seats in the Assembly, thus reducing the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance to just seven seats, Jayalalithaa's popularity took a nosedive pretty soon. And one of the most prominent people who was growing furious over her attitude was 'Superstar' Rajinikanth. According to his biography, The Name Is Rajinikanth, she was 'living life queen-size', not giving two hoots about the lives of the commoners. The book stated that roadblocks became far too common in Chennai during this time, making way for her convoy to pass through. Everything was going according to her commands, until one day, the 'Superstar' was apparently caught in the middle of one such traffic snarl. 'Rajinikanth's car is stopped suddenly. A senior uniformed police officer taps his car window. The driver lowers it,' author Gayathri Sreekanth wrote in the biography. Apologising to him, the policeman said, 'No traffic jam can move until the CM's entourage drives past the road.' When Rajinikanth asked how long he would have to wait, the cop said half an hour. When Rajinikanth pointed out, 'I am sure no car is so big to take half an hour. Why don't you allow the crowd and vehicles to move until then?' the officer replied, 'Sorry, Sir, orders.' The superstar took this personally and asked, 'Are you deliberately stopping me?' But as the cop's reply was silence, the actor grew restless. What followed was a scene straight out of a Rajinikanth film, where he stepped out of the car, walked towards a 'box shop', bought a packet of cigarettes, leaned against a lamppost and lit a cigarette. The scene changed almost instantly when the people realised who was amidst them. Dr Radhakrishnan Road, where the incident happened, soon started swarming with people, eager to see their beloved superstar. Sensing that the situation was spiralling out of control, the police officer rushed back to him and requested him to move away. 'Sir, I'm waiting for her to pass. I don't mind waiting,' Rajinikanth replied with swagger. Although solid evidence asserting this to be true is unavailable, the book has been out in public since 2008. That incident, among others, became instrumental in Rajinikanth's decision during the 1996 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections to campaign against Jayalalithaa. Not only did the Superstar extend his support to the DMK-Tamil Maanila Congress alliance, he even publicly said once, 'Even God can't save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa returns to power.' The impact this single line had was such that, not only did the AIADMK lose by being reduced to 4 (from 225 in 1991), but Jayalalithaa herself lost the Bargur constituency, which she had previously won. At a prayer meeting following Jayalalithaa's demise in 2016, Rajinikanth recalled this incident and said, 'Jayalalithaa lost elections in 1996 because of me. I had hurt her,' he said. Calling her the Kohinoor diamond, he said, 'Now, that Kohinoor diamond rests besides MGR.' He also maintained that she was a blessed human being. 'My daughter wanted to arrange her wedding at my house in Poes Garden. With the chief minister living next door, how can I not invite her to the wedding? But, I had my doubts that she might not come. Amma saw the invitation and said the same day there was the wedding of one of her party members. But she said that she will ask her party member to postpone his wedding and surely come to my daughter's wedding,' he added.

SIT probe: Ashok suspects conspiracy to bring Dharmasthala Temple under focus

Even though he welcomed the probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the mass burials in Dharmasthala, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok said he suspects a conspiracy behind media reports bringing Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple under focus in the process. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru on Monday, Mr. Ashok said certain 'unseen hands' were complicating the investigation into the matter. While the temple authorities too have welcomed the probe, Mr. Ashok said he would go a step further and ask Chief Minister Siddaramaiah himself to head an investigation into the matter. For, the 'gang of progressives' will reject the SIT's probe report if it is not in their favour. 'We want this probe to be conducted and the culprits brought out. Let the investigation bring out the truth,' he said, while taking exception to media reports that seek to portray Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple negatively. While Mr. Ashok claimed that the complainant was a Muslim and the Kerala government was behind it, sources said that the complainant was not a Muslim. Multiple sources have confirmed that the complainant is a Hindu from the Scheduled Castes (SC) community. However, since he is now given protection under the Witness Protection Scheme 2018, his identity cannot be revealed, the sources added. Meanwhile, former Minister M. Shivanna addressed a press conference in Mysuru on Monday and sought an investigation into the background of the 'anonymous individual', who has come forward after 30 years claiming to have buried hundreds of bodies in Dharmasthala. 'It is imperative to investigate this person's background and who is behind him,' said Mr. Shivanna, while expressing concern over the efforts to make baseless allegations against the Dharmasthala or Veerendra Heggade. Though a fair and impartial investigation must be carried out if any such crimes had indeed occurred at Dharmasthala and strict action must be taken against the culprits, Mr. Shivanna said it was also important to protect the sanctity of the revered pilgrimage centre like Dharmasthala and ensured that its reputation is not tarnished by baseless allegations.
