Partick Thistle appoint Baraclough as first sporting director
Former Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough has become Partick Thistle's first-ever sporting director. The appointment comes a week after the Scottish Championship club announced that striker and women's team manager Brian Graham and under-18s coach Mark Wilson would remain in charge of the first-team until the end of the season. They have been in charge since Kris Doolan was dismissed in February with Thistle under pressure to maintain fourth place in Scotland's second tier. The 54-year-old Baraclough previously managed in Scotland's top flight with Motherwell and the Englishman told Thistle's website: "I know from my previous time in Scotland that Partick Thistle is an iconic club with a great history and to be joining as it approaches its 150th birthday early next year is pretty special.
"An exciting end of the season is in store as the men's first team look to secure fourth place and push for promotion."Since Baraclough was sacked in October 2022 after two years as Northern Ireland boss, he has been assistant manager of League One club Cheltenham Town and director of football with Fylde of the National League.Thistle chairman Richard Beastall said that appointing someone with international experience "demonstrates our ambition and commitment to delivering our stated strategic ambition of becoming a sustainable Premiership club".Thistle's defeat by Airdrieonians on Saturday, combined with Raith Rovers' win over Ayr United, means the Glasgow side are only three points above their Fife rivals in the race for a promotion play-off spot.

And these qualities extend to its most famed golf course. There are few, if any, tougher more uncompromising tests than Oakmont Country Club, the home of this week's US Open. This is a place where players have to roll up their sleeves and get on with it despite the golfing environment's stark harshness. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau summed it up for his legion of YouTube followers when he said: "This course doesn't just challenge your game, it challenges your sanity." This is the latest in a long line of observations about a course that will stage the US Open for a record 10th time, starting on Thursday. Seven-time major winner Gene Sarazen started the trend when he said Oakmont possesses "all the charm of a sock to the head". The US Open is meant to be the toughest test and of all the courses that stage the United States' national championship, this appears the toughest. It is the ultimate US Open venue. Content: Hello golf fans and welcome to the third major of the year and the toughest test of the lot, as the world's best take on the fearsome Oakmont in the 125th US Open. World number one Scottie Scheffler is the biggest betting favourite to win this since Tiger Woods as he arrives as the US PGA champion in red-hot form, but he has a host of challengers lining up to take him on. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is his chief opposition, Jon Rahm knows all about winning the US Open and Xander Schauffele is always there or thereabouts. Scheffler's biggest challenge though will be Oakmont itself, and in particular its thick, gnarly rough that will result in some big numbers and some of the best players in the world being made to look rather foolish. Let the carnage begin!

It was reported last week that midfielder Adam was leaving his role as Everton's set piece coach under David Moyes in an attempt to return to frontline management. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 Charlie Adam with David Moyes Credit: Reuters 2 Fir Park, Motherwell Credit: Kenny Ramsay He was previously head coach at Fleetwood Town - and now the Daily Record say he could be set to return north of the border in the top job at Fir Park. We told you yesterday how Central Coast Mariners boss Mark Jackson had emerged as a shock candidate for the job. Leeds-born Jackson, a former defender who mainly played in England's lower leagues, has spent the past three years Down Under after previously bossing MK Dons. He has won an A-League Premiership and Championship as well as the Asian Champions League Two title. In the 2023-24 season Jackson and the Mariners won a Double, emulating ex-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou who achieved the feat with Brisbane Road in 2010-11. Jackson took over from Nick Montgomery who had left to become manager of Hibs following the club's A-League Grand Final victory. The 47-year-old honed his coaching talents working at Leeds United, where he came through the ranks as a player. The Fir Park side were rocked when Michael Wimmer chose to step down from the club. He departed at the end of the season for family reasons to join SVV Jahn Regensburg. Robbie Neilson and Tony Docherty have also been linked with the position but the 'Well board have shown they're unafraid to look outwith the usual contenders for the role.
