Nimisha Priya Timeline: Went To Yemen To Earn Living, May Have To Pay To Get Life Back
Nimisha Priya Timeline: The Kerala nurse was to be executed for the murder of her business partner on Wednesday, but it has been deferred for now
From question of livelihood to life, Nimisha Priya's journey as a nurse from Kerala to Yemen has taken the most unusual turn.
The execution of Nimisha Priya, who has been convicted for murder of her business partner, was to happen on Wednesday, but has been deferred for now. The government and others, including Grand Mufti of India , are trying to negotiate a deal, one of the clauses of which could be payment of blood money amounting to Rs 8.5 crore.
A look at how the 38-year-old went from Kerala to the jail in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital city that is under the control of Iran-backed Houthis.
Nimisha Priya's Timeline: Kerala Nurse, A Yemen Clinic To Death Row
2008: Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Pallakad, then around 20, moves to Yemen to work as a nurse, a common trend among professionals from Kerala.
2011: She gets married to Tomy Thomas, a fellow Malayali. The daughter is now a college student. While Tomy and the daughter later move back to India, reportedly due to financial constraints, Priya stays back. After the Arab Spring, Ali Abdullah Saleh's 33-year rule over Yemen ends as he handed over power to deputy Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
2016: Priya reports harassment and document seizure by Mehdi, but reportedly does not receive police help. Her passport is withheld by Mehdi and he allegedly abuses her.
2017: Priya attempts to recover her passport by sedating Mehdi, but he dies of what is cited as overdose, according to authorities. His dismembered and disposed of body is found in a water tank. Priya is arrested near the Yemen-Saudi border while trying to flee.
2018: Priya is convicted of murder by a local trial court and given the death sentence. She did not get adequate legal assistance, say reports.
2020: Her death sentence is upheld by a higher court. The Malayali Indian diaspora forms 'Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council' to save her.
2023: Priya's final appeal against the death sentence is dismissed by Houthi Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council.
2024: Priya's family negotiates with the victim's family over blood money or diyah, a concept in Sharia, the Islamic law, that allows the victim's family to pardon the killer in return for monetary compensation.

July 14, 2025: As the execution date of July 16 nears, the Indian government informs the Supreme Court that it had done whatever was 'utmost possible" to save the Indian nurse from execution. It also informs the top court that 'nothing much" could be done keeping in view the status of Yemen. 'There is a point up to which the Government of India can go and we have reached that point," attorney general R Venkataramani informs a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta. Meanwhile, a staggering offer of $1 million (approximately Rs 8.5 crore) is reportedly made to Mehdi's family by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council.
July 15: Amid negotiations, Muslim cleric Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar or Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, 94, who is revered as the 'Grand Mufti of India', says he spoke to scholars in Yemen, hours after which Priya's execution is deferred. The new date is still to be announced.
July 16: Abdelfattah Mehdi, brother of Mehdi firmly rejects the possibility of a pardon for his brother's killer.
Meanwhile, Priya and her family continue to hold on to hope.

Appellate Tribunal Upholds Seizure Of Chanda Kochhar's Assets In Videocon Loan Case
New Delhi: An appellate tribunal has found Chanda Kochhar, former CEO and managing director of ICICI Bank, guilty of accepting Rs 64 crore bribes that were routed through her husband Deepak Kochhar from the Videocon Group, upholding the Enforcement Directorate (ED)'s seizure of her assets. The bribe was part of a quid pro quo arrangement linked to the sanction of a Rs 300 crore loan to the Videocon group during her tenure, said the tribunal. In its detailed July 3 order, the tribunal observed that the financial transaction involving Videocon's immediate transfer of Rs 64 crore to NuPower Renewables Pvt Ltd (NRPL), a company managed and controlled by Mr Kochhar, after ICICI Bank disbursed the loan, clearly established a pattern of corrupt practices. "Although the ownership of NRPL was shown on paper to be with VN Dhoot (Chairman and MD of Videocon Group), he himself admitted that the actual control lay with Deepak Kochhar," the tribunal noted. The order also stated that the evidence, including statements recorded under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), substantiated the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) claim of a quid pro quo arrangement. The tribunal came down heavily on the earlier decision of the Adjudicating Authority in November 2020, which had ordered the release of attached assets worth Rs 78 crore, including those linked to the Kochhars. It held that the adjudicating body had "ignored material facts and drawn conclusions contrary to the record." Backing the ED's actions, the tribunal said, "We find substance in the allegations for quid pro quo involving the sanction of a Rs 300 crore loan by ICICI Bank to Videocon and subsequent transfer of Rs 64 crore to NRPL. The factual matrix supports the ED's claim and justifies the attachment of assets." The tribunal underscored that Ms Kochhar's role in approving the loan, despite her conflict of interest, was in violation of the bank's internal policies. It highlighted that she was a part of the committee which sanctioned the loan to Videocon, even as her husband's firm benefited financially almost immediately after the disbursal. The tribunal's ruling marks a major development in the ongoing investigation into corporate fraud and conflict of interest involving one of India's top banking executives.

Retired NSG assistant commandant robbed of jewellery at gunpoint in Delhi's Chandni Chowk
A retired assistant commandant with the National Security Guard (NSG), who owns a jewellery shop, was robbed of Rs 60 lakh worth of jewellery and cash at gunpoint in Delhi's Chandni Chowk area on Saturday, the police said. According to the Delhi Police, Bhimsen, 86, a former NSG recruit, was at his residence with his son Sandeep, daughter-in-law Neelam, and grandson when the robbery took place. 'A man named Sunil knocked on his door and took his name. As soon as the door was opened, three armed men entered the house. They started searching the house for some documents,' a police officer said. When the grandson resisted, one of the masked men took out a gun and tied the grandson's hands before taping his mouth, the officer added. The intruders then looted jewellery and precious stones worth Rs 50 lakh, while also taking $3,550. They also locked the family members in their kitchen before fleeing, he said. Once the thieves left, the family called their neighbours to get them out, the police said. The police said they suspect someone known to the family could be involved in the crime. No one has been arrested as of now, the police said. 'The robbers knew the house inside out and the location of the jewellery. We are investigating all possible angles and examining the CCTV footage,' an officer said. Bhimsen operated the jewellery business in the Kinaari Market area.

Playing role of Kader Khan: Nishikant Dubey's jibe at Oppn over questioning reasons behind Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Nishikant Dubey on Tuesday jibed at the opposition after Congress MP Jairam Ramesh claimed that there was more to Jagdeep Dhankar's "unexpected" resignation as Vice President, implying that the opposition was being dramatic. "Opposition is playing the role of Kader Khan in the film," Dubey posted on X while citing a news report from December last year where the opposition parties moved to impeach Dhankar from the Vice President's office and accused him of being "partisan". Khan was an Indian actor, screenwriter and film producer who was known for his comic roles. Dubey said, 'Just now they came with a proposal to remove him. At least pay attention to his (Dhankar's) health.' His remarks follow Ramesh's statement that there was more to Dhankar's resignation "than meets the eye." "The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is unimaginable. Until around 5 PM this evening, I was with him, along with several other MPs, and at 7:30 PM, I had a phone conversation with him. Undoubtedly, Jagdeep Dhankhar should prioritise his health above all else. However, it is also clear that there is more to his completely unexpected resignation than meets the eye. Nevertheless, this is not the time for speculation," the Congress leader posted on X. Ramesh highlighted his importance for the farming community and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must persuade Dhankar to change his mind. He added that the Vice President's resignation comes ahead of him making a crucial announcement related to the judiciary. "Jagdeep Dhankhar has taken both the government and the opposition to task equally. He had called a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee yesterday at 1 PM and was about to make some important announcements related to the judiciary," the Congress leader said. "We wish him good health and urge him to reconsider his decision. We also expect the Prime Minister to persuade Jagdeep Dhankhar to change his mind. This would be in the interest of the nation. It would be a great relief, especially for the farming community," he added. Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening 'to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.' Dhankhar, the Chairperson of Rajya Sabha, sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Just now they came with a proposal to remove him. At least pay attention to his (Dhankar's) health. "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution," the letter read.
