'Most divisive film of 2023' available to stream for free in coming days

Movie fans now have the chance to watch one of 2023's most controversial films with it set to land on BBC iPlayer in the next few days.
Dark comedy Saltburn, starring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, caused quite the stir when it dropped on Amazon Prime Video towards the end of 2023.
Saltburn follows the story of Oxford student Oliver Quick (Keoghan) who finds himself romantically drawn to the aristocratic Felix Catton (Elordi) and his titular country estate.
However, upon arriving at Saltburn, Felix and his family aren't quite what they seem, leading Oliver into a world of depravity, decadence, and even murder.
The film quickly gained a reputation for its severe sexual content and nudity, as well as its frequent depiction of violence and gore, drug use, and frightening scenes.
A moment towards the end of the film that used Sophie Ellis Bextor's Murder On the Dancefloor also sent that song back into the charts more than 20 years after its release.

It was celebrated by some critics who called it 'incisive and invigorating' but was slammed by other film fans who called described it as 'astoundingly misjudged'.
Still, regardless of how people might have felt about the Emerald Fennell-directed film in 2023 and 2024, almost all agreed that it was certainly a memorable experience.
An IMDb summary said: 'Saltburn was one of the most talked about films in the award season in 2024. The film was perhaps the most divisive of all, particularly due to the disturbing nature of the film.'
And movie fans will now be able to stream Saltburn for free, with a new BBC trailer confirming that it will be available to watch on iPlayer from Sunday, June 22.
The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes critical rating of 71% – new official reviews were still being added to the site almost a year after its release.
Audiences who watched Saltburn reacted positively, with the fan rating currently stating that 79% of viewers would give the film a score of seven out of 10 or more.
The audience consensus, generated by Rotten Tomatoes, warned: 'Saltburn is really intense and the cast does a terrific job, but if you're easily grossed out or offended, this probably isn't the movie for you.'
For Metro, Tori Brazier said Saltburn had: 'Sex scenes dripping with bodily fluids, [and] a highly sexualised sequence in a cemetery that no film fan is likely to have anticipated – until it's already unfolding in front of their eyes.
The film's director Emerald Fennell told Metro: 'If anyone should be asking any sort of questions about [my] sanity, for example, they should leave them maybe at my door. More Trending
'Everyone who worked on [Saltburn] was completely dedicated and completely understood the sort of film we were trying to make.'
She continued: 'I wouldn't ever want to have an awkward conversation [with an actor]. I'd never ask anyone, actor or anything, to do something they weren't comfortable with.
'But when you're talking about desire, when you're talking about obsession, when you're talking about power and love, then you do have to go to places that are quite extreme.'
Watch Saltburn on BBC iPlayer from June 22.

Movie fans disappointed after claiming new summer rom-com was ‘misleading'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Film fans have been left disappointed over the biggest summer rom-com, claiming it was 'mis-sold'. Materialists hit the big screen in the US last week ahead of a UK release of August 15, and boasted an all-star cast led by Madame Web actress Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. It follows an ambitious matchmaker in New York, who finds herself in need of some romantic advice after she is torn between her imperfect ex (Chris) and someone who could be her perfect match (Pedro). Unfortunately for Lucy, her love triangle causes chaos for her professional life as she attempts to mix business with romance. Celine Song's flick was met with rave reviews from impressed critics and currently commands a Rotten Tomatoes score of 86%, compared to a slightly lower 69% from the audience. However, many viewers have blasted Materialists for not quite doing what it said on the tin, and questioning why the movie was promoted as being a romantic comedy when 'it was neither'. Kelly commented: 'So boring and depressing! Mad that they marketed this like a rom-com, it was neither romantic or comedic!' 'Not what was advertised. Not funny,' Lara agreed. Robert L posted: 'Not the RomCom I expected or was advertised… dialog was very slow and at times the storyline was actually a bit serious… Love these actors, but this could have been a lot better…' 'Tonally an absolute mess. Movie is wildly, and shockingly inconsistent from scene to scene. Does not deliver on its premise or the promise of its marketing,' Hollywoo E complained. Sophia S fumed: 'This was terrible, the marketing for this movie is incredibly misleading. The storyline felt incomplete and relied on exhausted clichés. Overall, it lacks creativity and depth.' As Susan A added: 'I was expecting a rom com. This had some darker issues than I expected.' The official synopsis for the film reads: 'A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.' Celine previously lifted the lid on her efforts behind the camera for Materialists in an interview with A24, explaining that she worked as a matchmaker in her previous career and was able to draw on those experiences. She shared that it's 'very easy to dismiss' the genre of romance, but 'the truth is that love affects all of us. More Trending 'I'm always trying to make a movie that I want to watch. And to me Materialists is made for the audience in 2025, to talk about love and the way it exists today. 'It's completely worthy of cinema.' Materialists is in cinemas now in the US, and is released on August 15 in the UK. Got a story? Disturbing documentary about 'most evil reality show ever' now streaming on BBC

Viewers have been shocked after discovering the details of a one-off reality series that saw its star locked up alone in a room for an entire year. In 1998 aspiring comedian Tomoaki Hamatsu attended an audition for the Japanese reality show named Susunu!Denpa Shonen or, Do not proceed, Crazy Youth. The task he was presented with was to temporarily cut himself off from the outside world and spend all of his time entering mail-in sweepstakes until he won ¥1 million (about £6,000). Although he was given the option to call it quits whenever he wanted, he decided to stay for months, determined to complete the task at hand, doing so while completely naked. For nearly a year, Hamatsu lived off winnings from magazine competitions, having to earn essential items like food, clothing and toilet paper too. Despite thinking his actions were going to air at a later date, it turned out the TV network was airing the footage live to around 17 million viewers a week in a segment called A Life in Prizes. This fact was revealed to him after being surprised by an enthusiastic studio audience at the conclusion of the show when he was taken into what he believed was another apartment, with the walls then falling apart around him. At the time he also picked up the nickname Nasubi, which he still uses today, after his genitals were covered by an eggplant (Nasubi in Japanese) in the show. The shocking story is the centre of the The Contestant, which details what unfolded at the time, whilst also investigating 'the ethical concerns of reality entertainment in the 21st century'. This week it was added onto BBC iPlayer. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video However, after tuning in, people have made it clear what happened at the time was truly 'evil'. 'Watched The Contestant and can't believe something this deceptive and cruel was allowed. He was completely humiliated for trash reality TV,' user sneeeerr posted on X. 'I'm horrified by all of this… this isn't fun or funny…,' Deja shared. 'That producer is evil,' June added. Another said the show was 'absurdly cruel', while others said they'd been left 'in tears'. Speaking to Time recently, Nasubi said 25 years after the experience, he is trying to move forward despite still holding 'hatred' towards the producer who led the show. More Trending 'I've realised that I cannot change the past but by changing how I think about who I am today I can always change the future,' he said. 'When you put energy into other people rather than just focusing on yourself you become stronger than you could ever imagine.' The Contestant is streaming on BBC iPlayer. River Island's sell-out Collarless Jacket is back in stock - and in new shades

Metro journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more River Island launched the ultra-chic Collarless Jacket earlier this year, which we saw styled beautifully on content creator Emily Rose Moloney. The blazer jacket hybrid was available in cream, pale blue and vibrant red when it first launched a few months back, but it sold out in a flurry on River Island, as well as other stockists, including ASOS. We have been patiently waiting for the design to come back in stock for months. Finally the staple is back in stock, and in two new colourways. The Collarless Jacket offers a structured fit with a flare has a round neck, no collar, and long sleeves. It also boasts a button front fastening, though the four buttons stop just below the ribcage, so the lower half of the jacket flares out to the hips. Available in UK dress sizes 6 to 20. It also comes in a cobalt blue hue. BUY NOW FOR £59 River Island's Collarless Jacket is exactly what it says on the tin. It is, in essence, a round neck blazer without a collar. It boasts long sleeves, a button-front fastening that stops four buttons down, which allows the lower half of the jacket to flare open. The jacket has been crafted from a polyester and elastane blend, which means there is just enough stretch to hug the body perfectly without restricting mobility like other rigid blazers we have owned. The Collarless Jacket also features decorative flap pockets, though these are only for aesthetic purposes. The jacket is structured and achieves a fitted look, which contrasts the lower section of the design for a flattering fit and flare finish. More Trending Pair with tailored trousers, shorts, high waisted jeans, a slip skirt, or even layer over a satin dress. Whether you team with loafers, ballet pumps, sandals, or heels is entirely up to you, but this jacket is the ultimate staple to elevate any look. The Collarless Jacket is available in powder pink as well as a bright cobalt blue, both of which are available in UK dress sizes 6 to 20, though stock is selling out fast. According to the website this design is trending, which is unsurprising considering how quickly the original launch sold out. It is a chic alternative to the classic tailored blazer or oversize fit, and we need it in our wardrobes.
