After years of starts, stops, and superhero stumbles, the DC Universe may have finally found its footing, and David Zaslav is leading the victory lap.
Following a $122 million domestic and $217 million global opening weekend for James Gunn's Superman , Warner Bros. Discovery's CEO isn't just celebrating the numbers, he's doubling down on a unified DC future. In Zaslav's view, this is the beginning of a new era.
'Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team, by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world,' Zaslav said.
'James and Peter's commitment to honoring the legacy of the DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspired.'
The early success of Superman , starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, arrives on the heels of a string of DC misfires like The Flash , Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , Shazam: Fury of the Gods , and Blue Beetle all struggled to make an impact. But with a fresh vision, a rebooted tone, and a clearer roadmap, Gunn's Superman has become a much-needed turning point.
Zaslav recalled his initial meeting with Gunn, noting how personal these characters seemed to him. 'When he spoke about the DC characters, they were like his family.' That level of connection, he said, made it obvious Gunn was the right person to guide the cinematic reboot.
Zaslav made it clear this was only the beginning, saying: 'This weekend, we watched Superman soar as James Gunn's passion and vision came to life on the big screen. Superman is just the first step.
'Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theaters and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold 10-year plan. The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn't be more excited for what's ahead.'
That 10-year plan includes a full slate of interconnected films and series, with Supergirl and Clayface already in motion and a new Wonder Woman project reportedly in early development. The goal is creating a cohesive universe with consistent tone and purpose—a far cry from DC's scattered past.
There's still some pressure though, as a $225 million budget means Superman needs strong legs to prove it's not just a frontloaded win, and with Disney's Thunderbolts recently flaming out after an impressive start, there's reason to be cautious.
But right now? Zaslav along with the cast and crew of the film are enjoying the success.

‘70s Rock Star, 78, Brings Fans Joy at the End of New ‘Superman' Movie

'70s Rock Star, 78, Brings Fans Joy at the End of New 'Superman' Movie originally appeared on Parade. Moviegoers who watched the new Superman movie may have heard a familiar tune from Iggy Pop during the final scene of the film. Iggy's voice projected through the stereo as his 2006 song with Teddybears, 'Punkrocker,' played as Clark Kent, portrayed by actor David Corenswet, adjusted to his new reality. 'You see me drivin' down the street, I'm just not looking good / I got both hands off the wheel, I got you runnin' / I'm listening to music you can't hear, I got pretty music in my ear,' Iggy, 78, whose real name is James Newell Osterberg Jr., sang. The Teddybears debuted 'Punkrocker' in 2000 on their album Rock'n'Roll Highschool. The group re-released the song with Iggy six years later, which was featured on their album Soft Machine. 'Punkrocker' re-gained popularity amongst fans after they watched Superman. Some people ran to their mobile devices to find the music video on YouTube, and thanked the film's director and writer, James Gunn, for incorporating it in the remake of the DC film. 'Love it, thanks James Gunn, great ending song for Superman,' one fan wrote, as a second added, 'I'm here because of James Gunn's Superman. Unorthodox choice but I love that they used this song to close the movie.' Meanwhile, Iggy received his flowers from die-hard fans. 'IGGY POP has a musical career that spans 5+ decades. He is a national treasure,' a separate person wrote. Teddybears' bandmate Joakim Åhlund previously gushed that collaborating with Iggy on the song was a career high. 'Iggy Pop … it's pretty heavy. All those people are our heroes … we never would've dared to dream. It's all pretty amazing for us that we got the opportunity to work with such cool artists,' he said during an interview with Ion Magazine. 'But for me personally, I don't mean any disrespect to any of the others, but Iggy Pop … that's a proud moment for me.' 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 '70s Rock Star, 78, Brings Fans Joy at the End of New 'Superman' Movie first appeared on Parade on Jul 9, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

Pictures announced that Ariana Grande and Josh Gad will star in an animated film version of Oh, the Places You'll Go!, set to release on March 17, 2028. Jon. M Chu is set to direct the film, with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — the Oscar and Tony-winning duo behind Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land, and Snow White — handling the music. More from Rolling Stone 'Wicked' TV Special Featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Sets Air Date Frankie Grande Teases First-Ever Collaboration With Sister Ariana Grande Brandy and Monica Confirm Plans to Collaborate on New Music Warner Bros. made the surprise announcement on Twitter Tuesday, July 15, sharing photos of Grande and Gad in a recording booth, posing with a script in their hands. The film reunites Grande with Chu, who directed Wicked and its upcoming second part, Wicked: For Good. Grande starred as Glinda alongside Cynthia Erivo in the blockbuster hit. Gad is set to star in Spaceballs sequel, along with Adulthood and Frozen 3. The Dr. Seuss book Oh, the Places You'll Go! was originally published in 1990 and is one of the poetic authors' standouts, along with the likes of The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Lorax. The book follows a protagonist (as the reader) venturing into the real world, experiencing the highs and lows of life, and learning from it all. Numerous Dr. Seuss books have been adapted into films over the years, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which was made into a live-action film in 2000 and an animated version, The Grinch, in 2018. The Lorax was adapted into an animated film in 2012, and Horton Hears a Who! was released as an animated movie in 2008. Mike Myers starred in a live-action adaptation of The Cat in the Hat in 2003, while a new animated version starring Bill Hader is slated for release next year.
