Civil servants must enhance efficiency, governance, Sultan Mizan decrees
KUALA TERENGGANU: Sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin says the state's civil servants must enhance their efficiency and strengthen administration and governance to ensure sustainable progress and increased state revenue.
Sultan Mizan said that competent, knowledgeable, and highly skilled officers would be able to perform their duties effectively, including devising revenue collection strategies, managing state resources optimally, and ensuring strict and fair enforcement of the law.
"In line with current developments, I observe that mastery in strategic management, corporate governance, international finance, effective communication, and a deep understanding of fiscal policies and the current economy is vital in strengthening the capability of government officers.
"Officers of calibre are not only able to carry out their responsibilities efficiently but are also capable of identifying new opportunities to generate revenue for the state.
"At the same time, they can also reduce leakages, curb wastage, and ensure that the management of public resources is conducted prudently, transparently, and with integrity," he said in his royal address at the Investiture Ceremony held in conjunction with the 63rd Birthday Celebration of the Sultan of Terengganu at Istana Syarqiyyah here on Sunday (April 27).
Also present were the Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah; the Yang Di-Pertuan Muda of Terengganu, Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sultan Mizan; the Tengku Setia Mahkota Raja, Tengku Muhammad Mua'az; and the Tengku Puteri Daulath Raja, Tengku Fatimatuz Zahra'.
Meanwhile, Sultan Mizan also expressed concern over Terengganu's coastal erosion, which alters the landscape and affects the country's sovereign boundaries, including the Exclusive Economic Zone that extends 200 nautical miles from the shoreline.
He said if the issue was left unchecked, the changing coastline due to erosion could have significant implications for calculating maritime boundaries. The area up to three nautical miles from the coastline under state jurisdiction could be affected, including the waters around islands and maritime resources.
"More worryingly, the fishing grounds' boundaries are also impacted by coastal erosion. Marine resources that were once within Terengganu's waters are now at risk of falling outside the state's boundaries.
"This situation could have a profound impact on the local fishermen's economy and undermine the state's rights to valuable and potential marine resources. Therefore, efforts to mitigate and conserve the coastline must be given serious attention to ensure the sustainability of natural resources, the well-being of coastal communities, and the state's sovereignty," he said.
He expressed hope that all erosion control measures currently being undertaken by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID), which began in 2023, would help to overcome the worsening erosion problem.
In another development, Sultan Mizan urged the state government to take more proactive and comprehensive measures to ensure greater participation of people from Terengganu in the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project in the state, which had reached 91% completion. - Bernama

Green light for RM450mil Melaka flood mitigation project
THE Federal Government has approved RM450mil in funds for the Sungai Baru Flood Mitigation Plan in Masjid Tanah, Melaka, to address recurring floods in the area. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the project would span a 15km-stretch from Sungai Durian Daun to the mouth of Sungai Kuala Baru. He said it would also include the construction of four flood retention ponds in Kampung Londang, Kampung Jeram, Kampung Lubuk Redan and Taman Gamelan. 'This is a long-term initiative to tackle the flood problems affecting Masjid Tanah,' he told Bernama after visiting a Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) pump house as part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat engagement programme for the Lendu constituency at Taman Masjid Tanah Ria. Also present at the event were State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, state science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali. For short-term flood prevention, Ab Rauf said DID was implementing RM3.3mil worth of state-funded projects, including the installation of pumps, construction of pump houses and compact substations as well as carrying out river maintenance works. Two existing flood retention ponds at Durian Daun and Solok Duku were also undergoing rehabilitation at a combined cost of RM1.85mil, which is expected to be completed by December. Separately, Ab Rauf urged the state's stage bus operator to take greater responsibility for safety standards, calling for improved driver training following a series of fatal public transport accidents. He noted that several incidents were linked to negligent driving, resulting in loss of life.

Raja Muda of Selangor promotes youth empowerment, global collaboration in London
KUALA LUMPUR: The Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, brought together thought leaders, youth-focused institutions and members of the Malaysian diaspora to deepen international collaboration during his two-day working visit to London. The visit of Tengku Amir Shah, founder of the Selangor Youth Community (SAY), which began yesterday, also amplified SAY's mission of empowering young people. SAY, in a statement today, said the Raja Muda of Selangor yesterday led the Malaysian delegation to a high-level strategic meeting with King's Trust International (KTI), a global organisation founded by His Majesty King Charles III. "The meeting reaffirmed the partnership between KTI and SAY through the TEAM Programme Malaysia - a nine-week initiative designed to support at-risk youth, including young offenders, care leavers and NEET youth (Not in Education, Employment or Training). "Discussions centred on the programme's evolution since its launch in 2022, including impactful partnerships with drug rehabilitation centres and Malaysia's national employment portal, as well as sustainable funding through SAY's charity initiatives and municipal partnerships," the statement said. After having transformed the lives of over 460 young people in the last five years via the TEAM Programme, it said plans are in place to help 200 people next year, to be followed later by shorter interventions and expanding funding sources, supported by expected funding from HSBC. Tengku Amir Shah then visited Battersea Power Station to explore how heritage restoration can promote inclusive growth and sustainable jobs, emphasising the potential for blending community development with urban transformation, paving the way for future partnerships in Selangor and showcasing SAY's commitment to adapting global best practices locally. The delegation learned about BASE (Battersea Academy for Skills & Employment), a model that combines training, education, and industry collaboration to support underserved communities. He concluded his visit today after a Royal Dialogue Session themed "Leadership, Youth and Making an Impact" at the Malaysian High Commission in London, attended by Malaysian students, professionals and government representatives based in the United Kingdom (UK). The thought-provoking session offered guests the rare opportunity to hear directly from Tengku Amir Shah on his personal journey in leadership, the founding of SAY, and his vision for empowering the next generation of Malaysians, both at home and abroad. "Addressing structural challenges such as skill mismatches, mental health stigma and socioeconomic inequality, Tengku Amir Shah emphasised the value of resilience, purpose-driven action and cross-sector collaboration. "He also highlighted the vital role of the diaspora as bridges to Malaysia, bringing home fresh ideas, global networks and sustained partnerships. "High Commissioner of Malaysia to the UK Datuk Zakri Jaafar echoed these sentiments in his remarks, calling the event a timely reminder of the strength and reach of the Malaysian diaspora in shaping the nation's future."
