CITU plans to intensify agitations for achieving demands of workers
The two-day district conference of CITU concluded, here, on Sunday (July 27), where delegates reviewed the activities undertaken by the union in the last three years.
Briefing media persons on the deliberations of the district meet, here on Monday (July 28), CITU district general secretary R. K. S.V. Kumar explained that the participants at the conference discussed the agitations undertaken during the period, including the ones taken up for protection of VSP and for reinstatement of contract workers, whose services were terminated, the Anganwadi workers strikes, which went on for 24 days, ASHA workers, Midday Meal workers, against privatisation of Golden Jubilee Hospital (GJH) of Visakhapatnam Port, for revival of the Building Construction Workers Welfare Board.
The union had also fought for payment of ₹26,000 as minimum wage, provision of job security, regularisation of contract and outsourcing workers, and a general strike was observed on July 9 demanding withdrawal of the four Labour Codes, which were detrimental to the interests of workers. The conference has resolved to intensify these agitations further for the achievement of the demands of the workers.
The conference unanimously elected a new body with 26 executive members and another 106 council members. K.M. Srinivasa Rao and R. K. S. V. Kumar were elected as president and general secretary respectively, and Jyothi was elected treasurer.
A district-level seminar on the demand for withdrawal of the proposal to install smart meters would be held at Alluri Vignana Kendram on July 29. A dharna would also be held at the AP EPDCL Office on the same day.
The 18th national conference of CITU is scheduled to be organised for the first time in the city, on December 4. CITU secretaries P. Mani and K. Chandrasekhar were present at the press conference.

Bihar Draft Electoral Rolls To Be Published Tomorrow: Poll Body Chief
New Delhi: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Thursday said that political parties and electors will be given one full month to add names of eligible citizens or remove names of those they think are ineligible from the draft electoral rolls of Bihar to be published on August 1. In a statement to the voters, the CEC said that as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls of the state, the draft electoral rolls for Bihar are being published on Friday. Physical as well as digital copies will also be given to all the recognised political parties in Bihar in all the 38 districts by the district election officers (DEOs), Kumar said. "The chief electoral officer (CEO) of Bihar and the 243 electoral registration officers (EROs) will also be inviting any elector of that Assembly constituency or any recognised political party to come forward and give claims and objections from August 1 to September 1 for adding names of any missing eligible elector, removing names of any ineligible elector or correction of any entry in the draft rolls," he said. The CEC's remarks come amid continuous protests by the opposition parties against the SIR, claiming that it will deny eligible citizens of their to right vote for want of documents. They also alleged that the local poll machinery in Bihar could be manipulated by the ruling BJP-JD (U) alliance to its benefit. The protests have disrupted both Houses of Parliament on a daily basis during the ongoing Monsoon session.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar unveils projects worth ₹574 crore in Muzaffarpur
Ahead of the Assembly election, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (July 31, 2025) laid the foundation stone of various development projects worth ₹574.16 crore in Muzaffarpur district. The project includes construction work of Railway Over Bridge (ROB)-cum-approach road between Ramdayalu Nagar and Muzaffarpur railway station at a cost of ₹167.68 crore and construction work of a road from Muzaffarpur-Pusa Road to Chandwara bridge approach road at a cost of ₹120.93 crore. Mr. Kumar laid the foundation stone for widening and upgradation work of the road portion from Chandni Chowk to Ramdayalu Nagar at a cost of ₹44.76 crore and widening and strengthening work spanning 7 km of Chandni Chowk to Bakhri road at a cost of ₹89.77 crore. The Chief Minister laid widening and strengthening work of many other roads. After laying the foundation for the various works, Mr. Kumar interacted with social security pensioners at Teacher Training College, Patahi in which the beneficiaries thanked him for increasing the pension amount from ₹400 to ₹1,100 per month. He also provided tricycles to persons with disabilities apart from handing over a cheque of ₹1 lakh each to the beneficiaries under Inter-Caste Marriage Promotion Scheme. On the announcement of making 125 units of electricity free per month to every domestic consumer under the Chief Minister's Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme, the domestic consumers present there also thanked Mr. Kumar for the decision. The ASHA workers present there too thanked the Chief Minister for increasing the incentive amount threefold from ₹1,000 to ₹3,000. While interacting with the members of self-help groups (SHGs) also known as Jeevika members, Mr. Kumar said when his government was formed in Bihar, the number of SHGs were negligible. 'In the year 2006, we took a loan from the World Bank and started increasing the number of self-help groups. The Jeevika sisters are doing a very good job. We named the self-help group as Jeevika and all of you are called Jeevika sisters,' Mr. Kumar said. 'Inspired by our work, the Central government of that time implemented this scheme in the whole country under the name of Aajeevika. All of you stay strong and move forward. The government will help you in every possible way,' he added. Accompanied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and others, he also inspected the under-construction ROB of Muzaffarpur-Bypass, which is being constructed in a total length of 16.87 km at a cost of ₹250 crore. Except the ROB, the construction work of the remaining road has been completed. During the inspection, Mr. Kumar instructed officials to complete the remaining work as soon as possible. With its completion, traffic in Muzaffarpur city is expected to become more smooth. During the Pragati Yatra on January 5 this year, Mr. Kumar had reviewed the development work of Muzaffarpur district and promised several developmental schemes would be launched soon.

Tiruppur Corporation councillors close ranks, mull strategies for solid waste management
Rising above politics in a rare show of solidarity, Tiruppur Corporation councillors on Thursday closed ranks for a constructive discussion to strategise solid waste management at the council meeting, in the backdrop of accumulation of garbage over the last few days due to the strong resistance by the public in local bodies in the rural surroundings to dumping of garbage in abandoned stone quarries. Members of the DMK, AIADMK, Congress, CPI and other parties unanimously expressed desire to involve MLAs of Tiruppur North, Tiruppur South and Palladam, and Tiruppur Lok Sabha MP, for finding a lasting solution to the crisis, on the premise that the industrial activities in the city that ensures mega-scale livelihood should not be hampered in the overall interests of the economy. Responding to the plea, Mayor N. Dinesh Kumar said the civic body will shortly convene a meeting involving the people's representatives and prevail upon the local bodies in the rural surroundings to permit utilisation of sites that would not cause harm to the environment. The overwhelming opinion of the council was that while the State government should step-up attention to the crisis situation, the Central government also had a responsibility to provide funding for solid waste management, factoring in the abundant foreign exchange generated by the textile units in the city. The Mayor also added that the councillors' emphasis on retrieval of encroached land zone-wise for utilisation of sites well within the Corporation limits for recycling the garbage would be examined. Officials said 358 OSR (Open Space Reservation) land sites have been identified throughout the city and that ₹75 lakh has been sanctioned by the Tiruppur district administration for fencing the land sites. The Corporation, the Mayor added, was working on setting right the machinery in the 16 micro compost centres, and was expediting the process for establishment of the bio CNG plant with a daily capacity to handle 200 metric tonnes of wastes. Mr. Kumar drew the attention of the council to the financial allocation made for the mega project in Karumathampatti for conversion of electricity from the garbage generated in Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Erode cities. The members sought sensitisation programmes for the public for segregation of wastes at source, and recycling. Most of the councillors expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of SWMS, the private contractor undertaking the solid waste management activities in the city. The Mayor spoke about the impending augmentation of the City Corporation's hitherto insufficient workforce with the addition of junior engineers and 15 sanitary inspectors, for better monitoring of solid waste management.
