He's Bringing Rossini to Philadelphia and ‘West Side Story' to Rome

New York Times3 days ago
It was the morning of the dress rehearsal for Leonard Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' at the Baths of Caracalla, the ancient ruins that are the traditional summertime venue for the Rome Opera, and the show's director, Damiano Michieletto, was concerned.
'Some of the Jets have problems with precise pronunciation,' he said.
After deciding to do the musical in English rather than in translation, he did not have the funds to hire a full American cast for the Jets, a gang rumbling to take the streets of New York. You could tell, he fretted. (The diction was less of a problem with the Sharks, the rival Puerto Rican gang, he said, 'because Italian, you know, that works.')
That might have been his least concern. This year, Michieletto was given free rein to come up with the program for the Rome Opera's summer Caracalla Festival, which runs until Aug. 7, keeping in mind that 2025 is a Jubilee year for the Catholic Church expected to draw millions of pilgrims with varying musical tastes to Rome. In a break from past programming, he decided that the first major new production would be 'West Side Story.' A musical — gasp — was headlining one of Italy's most highbrow cultural stages and was an unusual choice in a country where musicals are considered a minor genre and often dismissed.
That did not faze Michieletto, who over the past 20 years has built a reputation as a visionary, nonconformist, at times over-the-top, director whose work is in demand across Europe. In September, he will make his debut at a major American opera house with Rossini's 'Il Viaggio a Reims' at Opera Philadelphia. There he will be presenting a revival of a much-lauded version first staged in Amsterdam in 2015 and reprised several times since.
For his new work at the Caracalla Festival — which this year is titled 'Between the Sacred and the Human' because it casts a wide musical net, from a staged production of Handel's oratorio 'The Resurrection' to 'West Side Story' — he opted to focus on the electric energy of a work that was directed and based on an idea by Jerome Robbins, one of the great choreographers of his generation.

Felix Baumgartner, Professional Daredevil, Dies Paragliding at 56

Felix Baumgartner, a professional daredevil and skydiver who fell faster than the speed of sound from the edge of space in 2012, died in a paragliding accident in Italy on Thursday, according to Red Bull, the company behind Mr. Baumgartner's extreme jumps. He was 56. Mr. Baumgartner crashed a few yards from a swimming pool in a tourist part of Porto Sant'Elpidio on Italy's Adriatic Coast, Massimiliano Ciarpella, the town's mayor, said on Friday morning. The cause of death was still unknown, Mr. Ciarpella said, but added that Mr. Baumgartner had become ill during his flight and had already lost consciousness by the time of impact. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, he said. Hours before his death on Thursday, Mr. Baumgartner posted a picture on Instagram of a scene showing gray cloudy skies and a billowing wind sock, with the words 'too much wind.' Mr. Baumgartner, a former Austrian paratrooper nicknamed 'Fearless Felix,' became the first person to break the sound barrier with his body on Oct. 14, 2012, when he jumped after ascending by giant helium balloon to an altitude of 128,100 feet over New Mexico in a project called 'Red Bull Stratos.' He reached a maximum speed of 833.9 miles per hour before he opened his parachute. It took Mr. Baumgartner four minutes and 20 seconds to safely land in the New Mexico desert. 'It was harder than I expected,' he said after the jump. 'When you stand up there on top of the world, you become so humble. It's not about breaking records any more. It's not about getting scientific data. It's all about coming home.' Millions of people watched Mr. Baumgartner's jump, which was broadcast on live television and streamed on YouTube. 'Felix was 'born to fly' and was determined to push the limits,' Red Bull said in the statement issued on his death. 'He was also smart, professional, thorough and meticulous, never leaving anything to chance.' Mr. Baumgartner started skydiving when he was 16. He joined the Austrian military's demonstration and competition team, where he developed his skills, according to his website, and began performing skydiving exhibitions for Red Bull in 1988. In the decades since, he completed thousands of extreme jumps, including BASE jumps and skydiving. He also became a professional helicopter pilot. 'Ever since I was a child,' he said in an interview on the Red Bull website, 'I have always wanted to jump out of a plane.' A full obituary will follow.

Arty, brightly colored and blood-soaked, the movies combine elements of horror, thrillers and murder along with high style. The genre reached its peak by the mid-70s and produced classics like Dario Argento's "Suspiria" and Mario Brava's "Blood and Black Lace." He went on to say that the show already has a writer and an "amazing composer" but he's still looking for a lead actor to play him in the musical. That's where he requested Fallon's assistance — hoping he could put in a good word with his friend Justin Timberlake. "We need Justin Timberlake. He hasn't won a Tony yet, come on! He can sing, he can dance, he can do it all," Flay said, adding, "Just for a month!" Fallon agreed to see what he could do, although it didn't sound like it was going to be the easiest task to get Timberlake on board. And while JT may not be involved in the show, Flay says food is definitely going to be a part of the experience — so fans won't want to miss out! You can hear all that Bobby Flay had to say below.
