is set to rise as major brand deals come up for renewal, executives at brands and agencies associated with him said.
The world's highest-paid cricketer is also looking to trim his roster of mid-sized endorsements. His team has informed several brands that their contracts are not likely to be renewed once the current agreements expire, signalling a move toward fewer, bigger partnerships.
"Kohli's goodwill will outlive his playing days," said Sandeep Goyal, managing director of ad agency Rediffusion, which has been associated with the cricketer for multiple campaigns. "There are such few heroes as him... He appeals to Gen Z because of his aggression, with consumers across age and demographics because of his track record on the field, and with women consumers because he involves his family upfront in all achievements."

Kohli, 36, is known to charge anywhere between ₹5 crore and ₹10 crore for big endorsements per year, and have depended on the longevity and personal equations with these brands, according to two people representing sports management companies.
A June 2024 report by advisory firm Kroll estimated Kohli's
brand value
at $227.9 million, or about ₹1,900 crore, making him India's most valued celebrity.
"We will, of course, continue our association with Virat...retirement or not," a senior executive of a large digital-only brand told ET. "We are renewing his contract (at the revised fee). He has a massive social and performance-driven connect with people who we see as potential consumers... That very few have."
Kohli has over 67.8 million followers on social media platform X and over 272 million followers on Instagram, as of Monday.
Kohli's own ventures include sportswear brand One8, restaurant chain One8 Commune, and athleisure brand Wrogn.
He has invested in plant-based meat start-up Blue Tribe, coffee brand Rage Coffee, wellness services company Hyperice, Chisel fitness centres and gyms, and fashion platform Universal Sportsbiz.
He has also invested in homegrown sportswear startup Agilitas founded by former Puma India MD Abhishek Ganguly. Kohli recently ended his over-eight-year partnership with Puma to associate with Agilitas.
His retirement announcement on Instagram on Monday led to a surge of brands posting tributes on social media platforms, irrespective of whether they have been associated with him or not.

Instead of an office job, however, Singh has chosen a more offbeat career path - the US-returned techie is now selling street food in Mohali. A video featuring Singh and his food stall was shared on the popular Instagram channel 'Foodler'. Omar, the content creator behind the channel, told that Singh returned to India in January and now runs a food stall in Mohali, Punjab. In the video, Singh whipped out his driving license from New York as proof that he once lived in the Big Apple. He explained that he has 12 years of total work experience in tech, retail, call centres and IT. It was a tech job that took Singh to his United States. He was in the country for three years. After the death of his father, however, Singh moved back to India. 'No, I wasn't deported,' he clarified in the video. Singh and his wife now run a food stall in the popular 3B2 market of Mohali. She does all the cooking, while he sets up the stall and sells the food. On the day the video was filmed, Singh was selling rajma, chawal, kadhi pakoda, rotis, soya chaap and mango lassi. I help her, but she is the one who cooks,' Singh told Omar in the video. 'He started this food joint just 2-3 months back. Right now the income is not fixed as the business is new,' Omar told 'His wife prepares everything in the morning and he starts his work at 1 pm. Around 3 pm, his wife joins him as well.' For many people across the world, settling down in the US is a lifelong dream. In fact, so deeply entrenched is the attraction that many resort to illegal 'Dunki' routes or cross borders illegally to reach the US. Maninder Singh, however, has no wish to return to the US. 'He told me that it might look interesting for people to visit or stay in the US, but he loves his home and would not want to go back to the US again even if he gets another chance,' Omar told Instead, the small business owner wants to expand his menu and add new dishes, eventually hoping to turn a profit.

AI-native startups edge out SaaS in investor playbooks as tech shift accelerates

India's venture capital ecosystem is undergoing a pivotal shift in 2025, with investors increasingly backing artificial intelligence (AI)-native startups over traditional software-as-a-service (SaaS) players. Between January and 4 June, AI-focused startups raised $454 million across 65 deals, slightly surpassing SaaS firms, which drew $432 million over 52 deals, according to data from Venture Intelligence. While some overlap exists as SaaS companies adopt AI features, the trend points to a deeper reset in investor priorities. 'AI-led startups are commanding 3–4x valuation premiums over traditional SaaS businesses, thanks to their potential for faster scalability and deeper, more transformative use cases," said Abhinav Chaturvedi, partner at Accel. Also read: 10 Indian AI startups and products to watch out for Blurring boundaries However, to stay competitive with pure-play AI startups, many SaaS companies are now streamlining operations and aggressively investing in artificial intelligence, according to multiple industry executives. This trend is pushing established SaaS companies to retool quickly. 'If SaaS companies don't integrate AI, they are unlikely to survive the next 2–3 years," said Nitin Bhatia, managing director at DC Advisory. 'We're seeing the switch happen where pure-play SaaS startups don't exist anymore. AI is becoming a fundamental part of what they offer—whether it's to enhance customer experience or product capabilities." This transition is also shaping the investment strategies of venture capital firms such as Stellaris Venture Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Accel, who see the convergence of AI and SaaS playing out across their portfolios. Accel's Chaturvedi pointed to SaaS portfolio companies like Chargebee, which is exploring newer monetisation models like usage-based pricing, and BrowserStack and Testsigma, which are embedding AI to automate testing—showing how legacy players are not just adapting but helping shape this transformation. Some of the largest AI-linked fundraises this year include Netradyne's $90 million, SpotDraft's $54 million, and Infinite Uptime's $35 million rounds, according to Venture Intelligence data. The narrowing gap between AI and SaaS deal volumes underscores growing investor appetite for pure-play AI models. Deal data reflects this shift: in 2024, there were 193 SaaS deals versus 145 AI deals. A year earlier, SaaS saw 159 deals compared to just 96 in AI. While SaaS still leads in terms of overall capital raised, AI startups are quickly gaining ground with more focused, domain-specific solutions. 'Our existing SaaS portfolio companies are investing aggressively in AI capabilities. From Whatfix in the digital adoption space to Factors in marketing automation, most of our portfolio companies are already using AI to add features, increase convenience and reduce cost for their customers," said Ritesh Banglani, founding partner at Stellaris Venture Partners. According to Banglani, more than 80% of Stellaris' B2B SaaS deal flow is now led by AI-centric solutions. 'This shift will transform every process within an enterprise from marketing and sales to accounting and finance," he added. A generational shift Industry veterans believe the shift marks a generational reset for Indian software startups. SaaS inflows have dried up, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu said last week, attributing it to rising investor appetite for AI and growing profitability pressure on SaaS firms. He noted that artificial intelligence is now superseding traditional SaaS models in funding priority. Still, the broader outlook for SaaS remains strong—with a caveat. In August, Bessemer Venture Partners projected that the Indian SaaS market could generate three times more revenue by 2030 compared to today, driven in large part by the infusion of AI. In 2025, Indian SaaS is expected to clock $25 billion in annual recurring revenue. Bessemer also expects India to see a similar shift as the global SaaS wave of the late 2010s—with AI software exports playing a bigger role in the $400 billion global services market. As the Indian startup ecosystem matures, the once-clear boundaries between SaaS and AI are dissolving—with capital, innovation and talent increasingly flowing toward platforms that can do both. AP images Indonesia revoked permits on Tuesday for four of the five mining companies operating in the eastern archipelago of Raja Ampat after activists shared videos of islands damaged by nickel extraction. The cluster of islands and shoals in Southwest Papua Province sits in the Coral Triangle and is thought to be one of the world's most pristine reefs, with its clear blue waters making it a popular diving spot. Last week, Greenpeace Indonesia published videos highlighting nickel mining projects on three islands, including one which racked up more than 15 million Instagram views. President Prabowo Subianto "decided that the government will revoke the mining business license of four companies in Raja Ampat", state secretariat minister Prasetyo Hadi told reporters. Energy and mineral resources minister Bahlil Lahadalia said "they have violated" regulations. "We believe this region must be protected," he said. Greenpeace said nickel exploitation on the islands of Gag, Kawe and Manuran had led to the destruction of more than 500 hectares of forest and vegetation. It led to growing calls for the licences to be withdrawn from politicians and celebrities. The four companies impacted by the immediate ban are PT Anugerah Surya Pratama, PT Nurham, PT Kawei Sejahtera Mining and PT Mulia Raymond Perkasa. PT Nurham received its mining permits this year and has not started production but the other three have had them since 2013, according to the energy ministry. One more company -- PT Gag Nikel -- will continue to operate on Raja Ampat's Gag island but be closely monitored, said Bahlil. It received its operational permit in 2017. Indonesia has the world's largest nickel reserves and is the biggest producer of the metal, which is used in electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel. Greenpeace Indonesia said the decision was a good start but the government needed to take further action. "We appreciate this decision but we need to make sure the decision will be implemented. We need to make sure they stop," forest campaign team leader Arie Rompas said. He warned the government could reissue the permits later or the companies could appeal the decision in court.
