WASHINGTON, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Mark Reynolds, 48, a marketing professional outside of Washington, D.C., said he and his family used to take a lot of trips once the lockdowns were lifted after the COVID-19 pandemic -- to Asia, Europe and in the United States.
Over the last four years he and his family took about five trips a year. "We've cut that to two trips per year," he told Xinhua.
He has also canceled an expensive gym membership and cut his time with a personal trainer in half, and is now focusing on retirement savings.
Since U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs in April, Americans have become increasingly cautious about opening their wallets.
Consumer spending rose by a sluggish 0.2 percent in April, down from a 0.7 percent rise in the month prior, amid Americans' concerns over how tariffs would impact the economy, according to data released last month by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Many Americans seek to increase their savings, after splurging for several years after the pandemic. The personal savings rate rose to 4.9 percent in April from 4.3 percent in March, according to data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Since taking office, Trump has announced a slew of sweeping tariffs, including a general 10 percent duty on all goods coming into the United States. That has caused some products to go up in price.
Gary Clyde Hufbauer, a non-resident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, told Xinhua that he expects Americans to continue making cutbacks.
"Late payment rates on credit cards are high, and many households are buying food on short-term credit, housing sales are weak. All these indicate the financial problems average Americans are facing," Hufbauer said.
Sharon Erdhart, 68, a retiree in the U.S. state of New Jersey, said she shops at cheaper supermarkets even though she has to drive outside of her area a little further.
"I don't dine out anymore because of price increases. I have curtailed my credit card use," she told Xinhua.
U.S. retail sales declined 0.9 percent in May, exceeding the 0.6 percent drop that economists had forecast, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Accounting firm KPMG's recent consumer pulse report showed that in response to tariffs, "50 percent are cutting back on purchases, and 49 percent are actively seeking deals and discounts."
"We're seeing a more selective and cost-conscious summer travel season," said Duleep Rodrigo, KPMG's consumer and retail leader.
Joe Chance, a retired security professional in Philadelphia, told Xinhua he continues to take his family on vacation, but is taking bargain airlines now.
"They don't get movies or anything on board even like meals, but it's cheap," he said.
Meanwhile, discount stores, such as Dollar Tree, Walmart, and TJX Companies -- the firm that owns T.J. Maxx and Marshalls -- have been gaining steam in the retail sector.
Shoppers are opting toward lower prices, and consumers are more likely to seek bargains on goods ranging from beauty products to clothing.
Hufbauer said he expects discount stores to do well in this environment.
Dean Baker, a senior economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, told Xinhua: "Wage growth seems to have slowed, so that will slow spending and cause people to look to discount stores."

BRUSSELS: Candy maker Mars' takeover of Pringles maker Kellanova was cleared by US antitrust regulators on Wednesday, but their EU counterparts opened a full-scale investigation into the US$36 billion deal, saying it could lead to price hikes. President Donald Trump's antitrust enforcers, including Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, have said they will not hesitate to block deals that harm competition in ways that hurt consumers, but also vowed not to stop deals that do not pose such concerns. "Our job is to determine whether there is a violation of American law that we can prove in court. And once we've concluded there is not, our job is to get out of the way," Bureau of Competition Director Daniel Guarnera said in an FTC statement announcing the early termination of its review of the deal. The deal did not meet the standard for an anticompetitive merger, the FTC said. Mars said it was pleased by the US decision and that the deal had received all regulatory clearances aside from the EU. It said it expected the deal to close towards the end of 2025. Kellanova did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the U.S. approval, which was made outside regular business hours. The EU's move could force Mars to divest assets to address the European competition concerns or risk the deal being blocked. The EU warned that prices may rise as the deal will boost Mars' negotiating power with retailers. Mars said after the EU move that it was disappointed with the EU's decision but it remained optimistic over the outcome of the transaction. "We remain confident the pending combination of Mars Snacking and Kellanova's complementary footprints and portfolios will deliver more choice and innovation to consumers," said Mars in a statement. "We look forward to delivering the benefits of the pending transaction to all Mars and Kellanova stakeholders," it added. Mars announced the deal last August, among the biggest in the sector, that would bring brands from M&Ms, Snickers and Whiskas to Pringles, Pop-Tarts and Kellogg cereals under one roof. Combined, Mars and Kellanova would account for roughly 12 per cent of the US snacking and candy industry, according to market share data from NielsenIQ. This would still leave the market with competitors including PepsiCo PEP.O, Kraft Heinz KHC.O, Mondelez MDLZ.O, Hershey HSY.N, General Mills GIS.N and others. Consumer advocacy groups had called on the FTC to investigate the deal last year, likening it to grocery chain Kroger's proposed acquisition of rival Albertson's, and raising concerns it would lead to higher grocery prices. Some experts at the time the deal was announced noted a limited overlap among their offerings. The EU competition enforcer said the deal would boost Mars' product portfolio, giving it increased leverage to extract higher prices during negotiations with retailers and in turn would lead to higher prices for consumers. It said both companies have a strong market position in several product markets in multiple EU countries due to their brands seen as must-have for consumers. The Commission also cited concerns from some European retailers about Mars' increased bargaining power and that they may be forced to accept higher prices, in order to avoid not being able to offer the products of Mars and Kellanova. "As inflation-hit food prices remain high across Europe, it is essential to ensure that this acquisition does not further drive up the cost of shopping baskets," EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera said in a statement. The Commission set an Oct. 31 deadline for its decision. Reuters exclusively reported on June 18 that the deal would trigger intensive EU regulatory scrutiny. European retailers have voiced worries about the power of large international suppliers of branded packaged goods and the high concentration levels in products such as breakfast cereals, carbonated drinks, confectionery and frozen desserts.

Billionaire Richard Li's FWD Group seeks to raise US$442mil in Hong Kong IPO

KUALA LUMPUR: Insurer FWD Group, backed by billionaire Richard Li, is looking to raise HK$3.47 billion (US$442.08 million) through a Hong Kong initial public offering, according to a regulatory filing on Thursday. The pan-Asian insurer is offering 91.3 million shares at HK$38.00 apiece, valuing FWD at HK$48.298 billion (US$6.15 billion), the filings showed. Mubadala Capital, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, has subscribed to buy US$150 million worth of FWD shares in the IPO and a subsidiary of Japanese life insurer T&D Holdings will buy US$100 million of stock, the filings showed. The stock will start trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on July 7. There is a so-called 'greenshoe option' to sell a further 13.7 million shares to raise an extra US$67 million. The company said it would use the proceeds to improve its capital position, reduce debt and grow its customer base and digital strategies. FWD said while it was not directly impacted by U.S President Donald Trump's April tariffs package, customers in some of major markets including Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia would be hit. "These developments could also have potential inflationary effects, affect global supply chains, and result in the reduction of manufacturing and export capacity and loss of employment in our key markets," FWD said in the risk factors section of its prospectus. The deal is FWD's third attempt to go public after it initially aimed for a New York IPO in 2021 to raise US$2-US$3 billion. The insurance group shelved the plan due to lengthy delays in obtaining US. regulatory approval. FWD faced questions from the US regulators on its mainland China ties, Reuters reported citing sources, and had been treated by authorities as a Chinese business rather than a Hong Kong entity. FWD then targeted a Hong Kong IPO in 2022 but put those plans on hold due to volatile global financial markets at the time. FWD raised about US$1.8 billion in private funding rounds in 2021 and 2022 which valued the business at around US$9 billion, Reuters reported at the time. The company made a US$10 million net profit in 2024, according to its prospectus, compared to a US$717 million loss the prior year. Li, the son of Hong Kong's richest person Li Ka-shing, founded FWD in 2013 and controls it via investment arm Pacific Century Group, which has interests in the technology, media, telecoms and property as well as financial sectors. Hong Kong listing volumes have rebounded this year, overcoming subdued activity in the last couple of years with CATL's US$5.3 billion listing and Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals' US$1.27 billion listing.

THE HAGUE: President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the U.S. has not given up its maximum pressure on Iran - including restrictions on sales of Iranian oil - but signaled a potential easing in enforcement to help the country rebuild. "They're going to need money to put that country back into shape. We want to see that happen," Trump said at a news conference at the NATO Summit when asked if he was easing oil sanctions on Iran. Trump said a day earlier that China can continue to purchase Iranian oil after Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire, but the White House later clarified that his comments did not indicate a relaxation of U.S. sanctions. Trump imposed waves of Iran-related sanctions on several of China's independent "teapot" refineries and port terminal operators for purchases of Iranian oil. Steve Witkoff, Trump's Middle East envoy, told CNBC that Trump's comment on China's ability to buy Iranian oil "was a signal to the Chinese that we want to work with you, that we're not interested in hurting your economy." China is the top buyer of Iranian crude and has long opposed Trump's sanctions on the oil. "We're interested in working together with you in unison, and hopefully that becomes a signal to the Iranians," Witkoff said.
