Shah to visit security camps, review anti-Naxal ops to Chhattisgarh

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit a security camp and chair a meeting to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh during his two-day trip to the state starting from June 22, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma said on Thursday. He will also lay foundation stones for a National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and a state forensic lab in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar on the first day of his visit (Sunday), Sharma told reporters here.
The state government has allotted 40 acres of land for NFSU, which will be built by the Centre at a cost of around Rs 400 crore. The state forensic lab will come up adjacent to the NFSU campus on six to seven acres of land, said the Deputy CM, who holds the home portfolio. The next day (Monday), Shah will visit a camp of security forces (in Bastar region), he added. During the visit, Shah will chair a meeting in Raipur to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations and meet with family members of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Girepunje, who died when a Maoist planted pressure IED exploded in Sukma district on June 9, Sharma added.
Notably, anti-Naxalite operations have been intensified in Chhattisgarh since the BJP was elected to power in the 2023 assembly polls and more than 400 Maoist cadres, including senior functionaries, gunned down by security forces in separate encounters since January 2024. Shah has repeatedly declared that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is committed to eradicate Naxalism by March 31, 2026. Security forces achieved a major success when they neutralised Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju (70), general secretary of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), in the Bastar region on May 21.

Mumbai EOW arrests IPS officer's husband in Rs 7.2 crore cheating case
Mumbai: The city's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Wednesday arrested Purushottam Chavan, the husband of IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar, for his alleged role in a Rs 7.4-crore cheating case. EOW officers took custody of Chavan from the Arthur Road Jail and produced him before the Esplanade Court, which sent him to police custody till June 24. In Jan, two cases were registered against Chavan and others and transferred to the EOW. Chavan is currently being questioned in the second case, where he and two others are accused of allegedly cheating a Gujarat-based businessman of Rs 7.4 crore by promising him help in obtaining development rights certificates from Thane and Pune municipal corporations to get govt land at a cheaper rate. The alleged cheating took place between 2015 and 2024.

State govt to confiscate properties of 52 criminals
Patna: In a sweeping crackdown on organised crime, the state govt has begun the process of seizing properties worth crores from 52 major criminals across the state. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) has sent detailed dossiers to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for action under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The list includes liquor smugglers, sand mafia, land mafias, cybercriminals and fraudsters. According to officials, 18 liquor smugglers alone own properties worth Rs 18 crore while 10 sand mafia members and 10 others accused of murder, extortion and related crimes are linked to assets worth ₹23 crore. ADG (EOU) Nayyar Hasnain Khan said, "Notable cases include four Maoist activists with properties of Rs 2.17 crore, two illegal mill operators with Rs 2.69 crore and three land mafia members holding assets worth Rs 4.93 crore. A cybercriminal's property worth Rs 86 lakh and one fraudster's assets worth Rs 2.03 crore are also under scrutiny." Prominent names include MLA Arun Yadav, accused of serious crimes including murder and rape; liquor smuggler Dhirendra Kumar Singh of Bhojpur; and vehicle-passing mafia kingpin Gulam Mustafa of Kishanganj. "This is one of the largest coordinated operations against black money in Bihar," Khan said.

BJP accuses Trinamool of ‘booth jam, rigging' in Kaliganj bypoll; voting continues amidst rain
In West Bengal's Kaliganj, one of the five Assembly Constituencies across the country, which went to bye-election on Thursday (June 19, 2025), allegations flew thick and fast. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Ashish Ghosh, alleged that polling officials deliberately marked with ink on his middle finger instead of the customary index finger. 'This was done in a pre-planned manner. Initially, they did not put ink on my finger. Then they did, after I went back for it. But before I could say anything, they put the ink on my middle finger. This was premeditated,' Mr. Ghosh alleged after he cast his vote in a booth at Debgram in Kaliganj. The bye-election to the Kaliganj seat in Nadia district was necessitated after the passing of Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed on February 2. The seat saw a three-pronged contest with Mr. Ahmed's daughter Alifa Ahmed as the Trinamool candidate, Ashish Ghosh for the BJP, and Kalbiluddin Sheikh of the Congress, who fought in alliance with the Left front, in the fray. On Thursday (June 19, 2025), the BJP accused the Trinamool of 'booth capturing' at multiple places in Kaliganj. 'The Trinamool did not allow our polling agents in two booths. I have informed the Election Commission. Booth jam and rigging are part of the Trinamool's culture,' Mr. Ghosh said. However, the Trinamool candidate, Ms. Ahmed, denied such allegations and said the opposition parties do not have 'organisational strength in Kaliganj' and should focus on 'working for the people' instead. Rain mars polling Voting continued on Thursday (June 19, 2025) amidst pouring rain in the constituency. 'I am confident that the people of Kaliganj will stand by our side… However, we are fighting not just against two political entities today but also the adverse weather conditions. It has been raining heavily since morning,' Ms. Ahmed said. While there were no reports of violence, many local people alleged that they could not arrive at their polling booths due to lack of transport, including ferry boats. As of 5 p.m., Election Commission officials pegged the turnout in Kaliganj at nearly 70%. The number is expected to increase as the voting closes. Kaliganj has 2,52,670 electors in total, according to the revised electoral list published by the Election Commission on May 5. A total of 14 companies of central forces had been deployed in the constituency for the bypoll. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari took to social media to accuse the Trinamool Congress of displaying 'regional bias' and an 'anti-Gujarati mindset' in its letter to the Chief Election Commissioner dated June 18, 2025, regarding the selection of a Gujarat-based webcasting agency for polling in the Kaliganj constituency.
