Shah to visit security camps, review anti-Naxal ops to Chhattisgarh
Press Trust of India Raipur
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit a security camp and chair a meeting to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh during his two-day trip to the state starting from June 22, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma said on Thursday. He will also lay foundation stones for a National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and a state forensic lab in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar on the first day of his visit (Sunday), Sharma told reporters here.
The state government has allotted 40 acres of land for NFSU, which will be built by the Centre at a cost of around Rs 400 crore. The state forensic lab will come up adjacent to the NFSU campus on six to seven acres of land, said the Deputy CM, who holds the home portfolio. The next day (Monday), Shah will visit a camp of security forces (in Bastar region), he added. During the visit, Shah will chair a meeting in Raipur to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations and meet with family members of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Girepunje, who died when a Maoist planted pressure IED exploded in Sukma district on June 9, Sharma added.
Notably, anti-Naxalite operations have been intensified in Chhattisgarh since the BJP was elected to power in the 2023 assembly polls and more than 400 Maoist cadres, including senior functionaries, gunned down by security forces in separate encounters since January 2024. Shah has repeatedly declared that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is committed to eradicate Naxalism by March 31, 2026. Security forces achieved a major success when they neutralised Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju (70), general secretary of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), in the Bastar region on May 21.

4.7 lakh fake NCERT books seized in piracy crackdown: Govt
NEW DELHI: In a record crackdown on textbook piracy, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has seized around 4.71 lakh pirated copies of its textbooks in operations across multiple states in 2024 and 2025, the govt told Lok Sabha on Monday. The raids, targeting manufacturers and sellers of counterfeit books and even producers of fake NCERT watermarked paper, led to confiscation of stock and machinery worth over Rs 20 crore. MoS for education Jayant Chaudhary said piracy was driven largely by "commercial motives of unscrupulous elements" and undermined NCERT's mission of providing quality, affordable textbooks. The enforcement action covered 29 premises linked to the illegal trade. To cut into the counterfeit market, NCERT has slashed textbook prices by 20%, improved paper and printing quality using modern machines, and expanded online sales. It has also piloted a technology-based anti-piracy solution - developed and patented by IIT-Kanpur.

ED faces 'wall of the dead' as Vadra puts burden on deceased colleagues
NEW DELHI: In its investigations against Robert Vadra , the Enforcement Directorate faces a "Wall of the Dead" with Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi 's spouse putting the burden of explaining the issues thrown up by the money laundering probe on his colleagues, who assisted him acquire properties in Delhi-NCR, but have since passed away. These properties are collectively estimated to be worth several hundred crores of rupees at current market prices. Vadra's statement was recorded at the ED headquarters here on April 15 in connection with a 3.5 acres of land deal in Gurgaon and transactions done by his Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd (SLHPL) and Skylight Realty Pvt Ltd (SLRPL). According to the chargesheet, Vadra was asked to explain how his company could have issued a cheque of Rs 7.5 crore (to the seller of the 3.5 acre land) when the bank account had only Rs 1 lakh balance. He responded by saying, "All financial transactions were taken by late Rajesh Khurana. He must have had a financial plan or understanding of how to act on this land and with the vision of late HL Pahwa would have planned the future financially or sale of this land." On all the transactions related to the land deal - its payment, sale deed registration and stamp duty payment - Vadra said the "information of the same must have been by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AI is changing the way you learn a language Talkpal AI Learn More Undo financial matters were handled by late Rajesh Khurana and all decisions related to the same would be handled by late Rajesh Khurana, late HL Pahwa and late Mahesh Nagar". Land possessions of Vadra and Priyanka include 40 acres in Faridabad. The responses struck ED investigators for the resemblance they do to the ones given by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi during the money laundering probe related to the National Herald case . Quoting from their statements, ED in its chargesheet against the Gandhis noted that both Sonia and Rahul parried questions related to acquisition of National Herald by Young Indian, in which they together own 76% stake, for a paltry Rs 50 lakh, saying that only the then Congress treasurer Motilal Vora, who passed away more than four years ago, knew the answers. "Robert Vadra has been evasive in his replies and did not provide any answers to the questions posed to him for explaining the transactions entered by SLHPL and SLRPL with OPPL (Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd). However, the documentary evidence collected during the course of investigation clearly establishes that the sale consideration was suppressed, and thus, the misrepresentations were made in the sale deed as well as in the balance sheet of these entities," ED has noted in its chargesheet. In the National Herald money laundering case, in his responses to six of 10 questions put to him, Rahul had said, "Motilal Vora would be aware of the transactions". As per the chargesheet, when Sonia, too, was asked to specify the purpose of floating Young Indian, she told investigating officers that only "Vora would have been aware". She, however, could not produce documents to substantiate her claim, ED alleged in its chargesheet.

Charting a new course: Outspoken Giani Harpreet's journey from jathedar to party chief
Giani Harpreet Singh, 52, who on Monday was elected as the president of the breakaway faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), is an outspoken religious leader with good command over panthic matters. Giani Harpreet Singh in Amritsar on Tuesday. The ex-jathedar's elevation came amidst his long-drawn tussle with the Sukhbir Singh Badal camp over his role in the December 2, 2024, decree, which not only declared Sukhbir Singh Badal tankhayia for the mistakes committed by the party during its government from 2007 to 2017 but also revoked Panth Rattan Fakhr-e-Qaum title awarded to late SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal. The decree also called for the reorganisation of the party with a change of leadership. Belonging to an economically weaker family, Giani Harpreet started his journey as a religious preacher in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). He joined the SGPC as a preacher in 1997 and assumed charge as head granthi of Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, Sri Muktsar Sahib in 1999. Giani Harpreet, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC) section of the Sikh community, was appointed as jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib on April 17, 2017, by the SGPC. Before being elevated as Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar, Giani Harpreet was a PhD scholar in the religious studies department of the Punjabi University, Patiala. 'My PhD was in the final stage, but after becoming jathedar, I never went back to complete it', he said. His appointment as acting jathedar of Akal Takht came at a time when the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs was facing a tough time over pardoning of Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim in 2015 by then Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh. Giani Gurbachan, who had to revoke the order after a backlash from the Sikh community, was replaced by Giani Harpreet, who was given a mandate to revive the lost sheen of the Takht. An outspoken Sikh clergy, he endeared himself to both pro and anti-Badal camps and regained the trust of the Panth thanks to his command of the panthic traditions and speaking skills. He was hailed by the Sikh segments when he sought a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 2019 and then expressed solidarity with Kashmiri activists on the issue of Article 370 abrogation. He also favoured Pakistan-based pro-Khalistan leader Gopal Singh Chawla during his speech at Nankana Sahib and later his speech on the SGPC's 100th foundation day on November 17, 2020, where he made a political pitch for the SAD with its top leaders present on the occasion, raised the hackles of the anti-Badal Sikh section. His failure to toe the Akali line, however, saw his relations with SAD turning sour. SAD leadership was irked over his presence at the wedding ceremony of the then CM Charanjit Singh Channi's son in 2021, and later in 2023, he also attended the engagement of Rajya Sabha Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member Raghav Chadha with Bollywood actor Parineeti Chopra at Kapurthala House in New Delhi. The May 2023 appearance at Kapurthala House in Delhi didn't go down well with SAD, which also controls SGPC and Giani Harpreet was replaced by Giani Raghbir Singh. However, he retained the post of Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar. His final showdown with the SAD leadership came on December 2, 2024, when Giani Harpreet played a key role in framing the edict. On December 19 last year, the SAD-controlled SGPC suspended the services of Giani Harpreet Singh and constituted a panel to probe the charges levelled by a person against him. The probe was not only questioned by the Sikh segments but was termed as 'breach of jurisdiction of Akal Takht' by its then jathedar, Giani Raghbir Singh. Nearly nine weeks after the pronouncement of the December 2 decree, Giani Harpreet Singh was sacked as Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar by the SGPC. Since then, he has been actively participating in the activities of the breakaway faction led by the Takht panel.
