U.K. men sentenced to more than 4 years in prison for cutting down iconic Sycamore Gap Tree

London – Two British men were sentenced to more than four years in prison on Tuesday for cutting down one of the most iconic trees in England, the Sycamore Gap Tree. The pair were found guilty in May of what a judge called a "deliberate and mindless" act of felling the tree as an apparent joke.
Justice Christina Lambert sentenced both Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers to four years and three months in prison during a hearing at the Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday.
The tree stood for nearly 200 years in a picturesque valley in northern England, right next to the remnants of Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The stone wall was constructed by Britain's Roman occupiers almost 2,000 years ago as a defensive structure, and the portion of the wall where the tree stood featured in a scene of the 1991 Hollywood blockbuster "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," with Kevin Costner, bringing the bucolic spot and the grand tree some degree of international fame.
A jury at the same court had convicted the former friends on two counts each of criminal damage for their 2023 nighttime felling of the tree, for damaging both the sycamore maple tree and the Roman wall. They had faced a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in jail.
Reacting to the guilty verdict in May, the National Trust conservation organization said the "needless felling" of the tree had "shocked people around the country and overseas."
"It was felt particularly deeply here in the northeast of England where the tree was an emblem of the region and the backdrop to many personal memories," said a spokesperson.
Prosecutor Richard Wright told the court that the pair drove to the site, near the town of Hexham, in Graham's Range Rover and felled the tree on the night of September 27, 2023, slicing through the trunk with a chainsaw in "a matter of minutes."
"Having completed their moronic mission, the pair got back into the Range Rover and traveled back towards Carlisle" where they lived, he said.
The pair were jointly charged with causing £622,191 ($832,821) of criminal damage to the tree and £1,144 of damage to Hadrian's Wall, which once stretched across the country from northwest to northeast England.
The sycamore was a symbol of northeast England and a key attraction photographed by millions of visitors over the years, winning the Woodland Trust's Tree of the Year in 2016. Efforts are underway to see if it can be regrown from its stump or seeds.
The National Trust, which owns the wall and the tree, said it has grown 49 saplings from the sycamore's seeds, which will be planted this winter at sites across the U.K.
A section of the trunk that's over six feet long now forms the centerpiece of an art installation on permanent display at a visitor center near to where the Sycamore Gap Tree stood. People can see and touch part of the trunk, and "can once again gather, sit, and reflect," according to the visitor center.

Harry Potter star Emma Watson caught speeding near Oxford in £30k Audi

Emma Watson is facing a fine and penalty points on her licence after being caught speeding in Oxford. The Harry Potter star, 35, was clocked driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone and now faces up to six points on her licence and a maximum £1,000 fine. According to court records, Watson was behind the wheel of a £30,000 Audi S3 when she was captured by a speed camera on a restricted road. The offence took place in Oxford, where the actress is reportedly studying for a doctorate at the university. Her sentencing is due to take place at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court next Wednesday. It is not the first time Watson — who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films — has found herself in hot water over her car. In February last year, police impounded her Audi after she parked it illegally during a night out at the Rose and Crown pub in Stratford-upon-Avon. She had reportedly left the car blocking the entrance to a car park without realising, trapping a pizza restaurant manager's vehicle inside for more than three hours. The manager, who had just finished a 12-hour shift, spent hours trying to find the owner before calling the police. As the Audi was being loaded onto a recovery truck, Watson came 'flying out' of the pub, where she had been drinking with her mother. Despite pleading with officers, the car was towed and Watson was hit with a £192 fine. Watson became one of Hollywood's highest-paid actresses after starring in all eight Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011. Her last major film appearance was in 2019's Little Women, after which she stepped away from the spotlight. At Oxford, she has been coxing the New College women's third rowing team and is said to be dating fellow student Kieran Brown, who recently completed his doctorate. The couple were pictured kissing outside a Gail's Bakery in the city last year. Watson has also made headlines for her stance on transgender rights, having previously clashed with Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Watson wrote: 'Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are.'

Federal Hill residents voice concerns after dozens of cars and businesses vandalized

Calls for accountability and a stronger public safety response are growing in Baltimore's Federal Hill after a weekend wave of vandalism left dozens of residents and several businesses dealing with costly property damage. Jen Covino, the Public Safety Chair of the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association, said at least 55 vehicles and three businesses were damaged. It is unknown whether all of the vandalisms are connected to the same suspects. "We need more police officers and more patrols in the city," said Federal Hill business owner Han Kim. "And leave taxpayers questioning why I am paying taxpayer dollars to the city of Baltimore if I am not guaranteed emergency services in public safety where I live," Covino added. New surveillance video from the Federal Hill Cleaners on Charles Street shows the front glass door being shattered on Sunday morning. "So it happened Sunday morning, early morning, around 4:15 a.m. I checked my camera," owner Han Kim said. Cameras were rolling inside the cleaners when three teens seen walking by the business tried to yank on the locked door. One teen kicked the door and shattered the glass. Kim says he's spoken with other victims to see what these teen vandals were trying to steal. "Very tiny things, like water or gum or quarters, or something like that, so they just wanna have fun or something like that," Kim said. Covino said that when she woke up Sunday morning to see what her neighbors were going through, it added stress to their daily lives by way of unexpected costs. "I felt sad to see a number of my neighbors wake up Sunday morning and look, you know, for companies to replace their glass. Most of these folks are gonna be paying probably $1,000 if their deductible doesn't cover it," Covino said. She told WJZ that more than 50 vehicles on her block received property damage this past weekend. "A number of my neighbors on this block have been victims of violent crime, particularly physical assault," Covino said. "We've had armed robberies happen on the street right in front of my former house over there."

Ex-NFL QB Jay Cutler sparks outrage during South Africa hunting trip

Ex-NFL star Jay Cutler sparked outrage after posting photos on Instagram of an endangered animal that he'd killed. The photos show a smiling Cutler crouching over a dead giant sable antelope — a massive hoofed mammal known for its large, curved horns. 'Kicked off the Africa hunt with a beauty. Sable down,' the first post reads. Another post included a video montage of the hunt and Cutler shooting the animal. Cutler uploaded more pictures of a seemingly dead antelope on Monday with the caption 'Another great day.' While some commenters congratulated Cutler, and noted the meat from the animals tends to be donated to locals, the trophy hunting got some criticism too. 'Wow, Jay you killed a wild animal in a place it's rarely hunted and it had zero idea you were a threat,' one Instagram user commented on the first post. 'Super impressive.' 'I went to Africa on a safari and saw the most incredible wildlife and never once thought about murdering them,' another wrote. The giant sable antelope, which is considered critically endangered and nearly extinct, was considered 'rare and impressive animal' in its native Angola, according to the Carnegie Museum of Natural history. 'Never numerous, today the Giant Sable is critically endangered, threatened by habitat loss, civil war, and poachers. Active conservation efforts continue, but population estimates indicate there are less than a hundred mature individuals,' the museum's website reads. However, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources' Red List, which tracks species, classifies the giant sable antelope as 'stable' overall. While Cutler's hunting appears perfectly legal, he's run into trouble in the past. He was arrested for DUI and gun possession in Tennessee last October. Cutler, 42, played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.
