Ex-NFL QB Jay Cutler sparks outrage during South Africa hunting trip

Yahoo21 hours ago
Ex-NFL star Jay Cutler sparked outrage after posting photos on Instagram of an endangered animal that he'd killed.
The photos show a smiling Cutler crouching over a dead giant sable antelope — a massive hoofed mammal known for its large, curved horns.
'Kicked off the Africa hunt with a beauty. Sable down,' the first post reads.
Another post included a video montage of the hunt and Cutler shooting the animal.
Cutler uploaded more pictures of a seemingly dead antelope on Monday with the caption 'Another great day.'
While some commenters congratulated Cutler, and noted the meat from the animals tends to be donated to locals, the trophy hunting got some criticism too.
'Wow, Jay you killed a wild animal in a place it's rarely hunted and it had zero idea you were a threat,' one Instagram user commented on the first post. 'Super impressive.'
'I went to Africa on a safari and saw the most incredible wildlife and never once thought about murdering them,' another wrote.
The giant sable antelope, which is considered critically endangered and nearly extinct, was considered 'rare and impressive animal' in its native Angola, according to the Carnegie Museum of Natural history.
'Never numerous, today the Giant Sable is critically endangered, threatened by habitat loss, civil war, and poachers. Active conservation efforts continue, but population estimates indicate there are less than a hundred mature individuals,' the museum's website reads.
However, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources' Red List, which tracks species, classifies the giant sable antelope as 'stable' overall.
While Cutler's hunting appears perfectly legal, he's run into trouble in the past.
He was arrested for DUI and gun possession in Tennessee last October.
Cutler, 42, played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.

Chelsea Freeman becomes Livvy Dunne's ‘new bestie' in behind-the-scene All-Star Game pics

The 2025 MLB All-Star Game allowed Livvy Dunne and Chelsea Freeman to have their 'Step Brothers' best friends moment. Dunne and Freeman each posted a photo to their respective Instagram Stories of them sharing a smile before Tuesday's game, with Freeman captioning the photo, 'New Bestie,' with two heart emojis. The 22-year-old Dunne, the girlfriend of NL starter Paul Skenes, took her fans behind the scenes of Tuesday's festivities in Atlanta. And, yes, please remember this photo when Paul Skenes becomes a free agent and the Dodgers — since they seemingly sign everyone — attempt to sign him. Advertisement With Skenes being the Pirates' only representative, it left plenty of time for Dunne and Skenes to mingle with stars from the other teams. Dunne also showcased other scenes from the red carpet and from the game itself. She posted photos of the front and back of her blue dress to her Instagram Story, along with videos of her and Skenes walking and Skenes helping tie her heel. 3 Dunne models her dress. @livvydunne/Instagram Advertisement Dunne also revealed she had field-level seats to watch her boyfriend post a perfect first inning, including a clip from the game-opening strikeout of ex-Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres. 'Welcome to the paul-star game,' she wrote alongside a star. 3 Dunne and Paul Skenes. @livvydunne/Instagram Advertisement She provided a second fawning tweet that featured the camera view of Skenes striking out Tigers outfielder Riley Greene with the caption: 'Boom shakalaka.' In an ironic yet all too familiar twist, the NL team blew the rare run support that Skenes received before securing the walk-off win in the home-run swing-off. Skenes is 4-8 despite posting a 2.01 ERA and having allowed two earned runs or less in 17 of his 20 starts. He is 0-3 with a 1.77 ERA in eight starts since his last win on May 28. The Pirates open the second half at home against the White Sox on Friday.

Raiders coordinator mentioned among names who could enter head coach conversation in 2025

With Pete Carroll taking over as head coach in Las Vegas, he got pretty much the best case scenario for his coordinators. He got well-respected defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to stick around to offer some continuity on the defense, while landing Chip Kelly fresh off guiding the Ohio State Buckeyes to a National Championship. Graham has been mentioned in regard to head coaching opening in recent years in part due to the successes of the Raiders' defense under his guidance the past three seasons. Kelly, on the other hand, had his turn as the hot name as a head coach. After rising the Oregon Ducks into the national title conversation, first as OC and then over four seasons as head coach, he got the call to the NFL to become the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. That lasted three years. Then one year in San Francisco and the luster had worn off. Then, much like Carroll's career trajectory when he left the NFL to coach at USC, Kelly returned to the college ranks, taking over as the head coach at UCLA. But his run there was not nearly as successful. And, according to Kelly, he burnt out on being a head coach and opted to return to his roots as an OC. That decision was a successful one, obviously. It took just one season before the NFL came calling again. Kelly returns to the spotlight where he was once considered the hottest offensive mind in football. And Pro Football Focus has him on the short list of hot coordinator names who, should they have success this season, could find themselves (back) in the head coach conversation. Others on the list are already hot names such as Bills OC Joe Brady, Vikings DC Brian Flores, Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury, and Chargers CB Jesse Minter. I think the list should have Patrick Graham on it. After all, he started to gain interest this offseason and if he can keep the Raiders defense humming despite losing both starting linebackers, starting safeties, and starting cornerbacks, there would leave little doubt of his abilities. Kelly has said that he rekindled his love for football by walking away from the head coaching job at UCLA. Which would suggest that he wants to stick with being an OC. But would he still feel that way should he have several NFL teams on the phone after this season? Who really knows. Pete Carroll and the Raiders are hoping Kelly would opt to continue doing what he loves -- coaching the offense.

Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer: If We Played 'Today,' Ty Simpson Would Be Starting QB

While there were indications of who would be Alabama's starting quarterback for the 2025 college football season, head coach Kalen DeBoer painted a clearer picture of who that will be on Wednesday: Ty Simpson. "If we played today, he [Simpson] would be our starter," DeBoer said in an appearance on SEC Network at SEC Media Days on Wednesday. "We announced that kind of after the spring. Nothing's really changed since then. He's done a great job of continuing to grow himself. That's under the tutelage of [offensive coordinator] Ryan Grubb, [quarterbacks coach] Nick Sheridan. Those guys are just pouring it all into not just Ty, but our whole quarterback room. I'm excited about the growth of Ty. I think trying to make sure that a guy gets out there and doesn't feel like he's got to be all-world even though we want our quarterback to be more than just a guy that just distributes the ball. We need him to go out and make plays. He'll grow into that. He doesn't need to prove that and try to do too much. "Trust the guys around him, trust his offensive line, trust the receiving core that I think is improved, as well. Their relationships are important and their continuity. They're operating on a different level now than what they were a year ago, for sure." Simpson is entering his fourth season at Alabama, primarily serving as a backup quarterback from 2022-24. The 22-year-old signal-caller was a five-star recruit who committed to play for Alabama in 2021. After 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young left for the NFL following the 2022 season, Simpson lost an offseason quarterback competition to eventual two-year starter Jalen Milroe, who was the Crimson Tide's primary quarterback from 2023-24. Simpson, a redshirt junior, has appeared in 16 career games but has only thrown 50 combined passes. With Milroe being selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the No. 92 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the starting job is Simpson's for the taking next season. Elsewhere in Alabama's quarterback room are senior Cade Carruth, redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, sophomore John Cooper and freshmen Keelon Russell and John Gazzaniga. Carruth and Russell were five-star recruits. The Crimson Tide are entering their second season with DeBoer, who previously went a combined 25-3 at Washington, as head coach, as he replaced Nick Saban following the seven-time national champion head coach's retirement. Last season, Alabama went 9-4 (5-3 in SEC play), missed the College Football Playoff and lost to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Alabama opens the 2025 season on the road against Florida State on Aug. 30. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
