Anurag Thakur once again declared ineligible for BFI elections
New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Former Sports Minister Anurag Thakur was once again rendered ineligible to contest the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) elections, with his name omitted from the electoral college released on Wednesday for the August 21 polls.
The Himachal Pradesh Boxing Association (HPBA) had nominated Thakur and its President Rajesh Bhandari as its two representatives for the Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the key agenda is the election of new office-bearers for the 2025–2029 term.
However, the BFI interim committee, constituted by World Boxing in April to oversee the federation's daily affairs, issued a 66-member electoral college after scrutiny, excluding Thakur's name.
According to the interim committee chaired by Fairuz Mohamed, Thakur's nomination was found to be 'in violation of Article 20 (iii) and (vii) of the Constitution of BFI approved by World Boxing." As per the revised BFI Constitution, approved by World Boxing on May 18, Clause (iii) states that the nominee to attend the General Council Meeting 'shall be an elected member of the State/UT member association during the election AGM duly notified to BFI and in presence of BFI observer." Thakur is not an elected member of HPBA, and his nomination had previously been rejected on similar grounds ahead of the elections initially scheduled for March 28.
At the time, the disqualification was based on an office directive issued by then BFI President Ajay Singh. That provision is now part of the formally revised constitution.
Similarly, the nomination of Delhi Amateur Boxing Association's Rohit Jainendra Jain was also rejected for violating Clause (iii) of the revised constitution.
Earlier this week, HPBA President Bhandari claimed that they had filed a fresh suit challenging the legality of the constitutional amendments made by the interim committee without the approval of an Executive Council.
The tenure of the previous BFI office-bearers ended on February 2. Elections were initially scheduled for March 28, but the process was stalled due to legal wrangling, including multiple appeals and counter-appeals.
World Boxing has set a deadline of August 31 for the elections to be completed. PTI APA APA AH AH

In a twist of political fate, Nishikant Dubey — once a close ally of Rudy — is now openly campaigning for Balyan. He is joined by BJP floor strategist CM Ramesh, who, insiders said, has been instrumental in mobilising support even from opposition members with backing from Telangana Congress leaders reportedly on Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's instructions including MPs from TDP, BRS, DMK and AIADMK. 'Nobody can doubt the ability that Ramesh has in mobilising. He has successfully done so even during the abrogation of Article 370," the team members said. Balyan's campaign seems to be of a military precision: senior leaders have been assigned 20 MPs each to bring to the voting booth, and outreach has extended to members from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir. Shrikant Shinde of the Shiv Sena and Lahu Krishna from the TDP are some MPs who have been assigned states to focus on. Dubey is also making use of his friendship and connection with party persons across the platform. It is even learnt that CM Omar Abdullah has promised that his party will support Balyan's candidature in this contest. 'Top brass of the NDA government have also in a way indicated which side they would want to support in this election," a source said. While one of the top five ministers in the central government said it will be better for him not to vote because it would be difficult to pick sides, one of the most vocal ministers said he will definitely cast his vote, and that there should be no confusion over his choice. Parliament premises have turned into a stage for this high-stakes duel. Rudy is usually seen near the Makar Dwar, where opposition MPs pass, while Balyan prefers Hans Dwar, frequented by ruling party MPs. Rudy's strategy is call-heavy — phone outreach, personal messages, and targeted conversations with influential members. Balyan's is more on-the-ground — meeting MPs at their homes and offices, securing promises of travel arrangements for former MPs so they can vote in person. Postal ballots have become another battleground. Rudy's camp claims a strong lead through absentee votes, but Balyan's team insists that physically present voters will tilt the numbers in their favour, rendering some postal ballots redundant. The 'Thakur versus Jat' caste contest has only added another layer to the fight. Both leaders are leveraging their identities alongside their political capital to court votes. Members said this election has the feel of a mini-general election, with state satraps, cross-party friendships, and even promises of travel support in play. Congress leader shares 9-month-old video of Gadkari saying 350,000 names were deleted from voters' list
Mumbai: To bolster the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's claims of vote theft in Karnataka and Maharashtra, Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Yashomati Thakur has shared a nine-month old video of union minister Nitin Gadkari saying the names of around 350,000 voters from his parliamentary constituency, Nagpur – including his relatives and hardcore supporters – had been deleted from the voters' list during the Lok Sabha poll in June 2024. In the 28-second clip from November 2024, Gadkari is seen telling an interviewer from an English news channel that names of 350,000 voters from Nagpur, including those who always voted for him, were deleted from the electoral list. 'I will not make allegations against anyone, but it is a fact that 350,000 voters were removed from the list…One of them was my maternal nephew. Even those from my family were removed (from the voters' list),' Gadkari is heard saying after the interviewer asked if the names were deleted to weaken his position in Nagpur. The fact that such allegations were levelled by two different people from two different parties, by those who held 'high positions politically and socially' proved that vote theft did take place, Thakur said. The three-term former MLA from the Teosa assembly seat in Amravati told Hindustan Times that the BJP resorted to vote theft whenever it did not want certain entities to win. 'They must have done the same thing with Gadkari ji,' she said. Thakur also said that on average, her constituency Teosa saw an increase of about 5,000 voters every year. 'But in 2019 and 2024, large numbers of voters were deleted from the list and the population of my constituency also reduced. Do you think that is possible,' she wondered. Thakur won the 2019 assembly poll but lost the 2024 election to the BJP's Rajesh Wankhade by 7,617 votes.

Gadkari urged to suspend toll collection at Takoli due to hazardous road condition
Shimla: BJP leader Brigadier Khushal Thakur (retd) has written to Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari , requesting the suspension of toll tax collection at Takoli toll plaza in Mandi district due to the hazardous condition of the Mandi-Kullu stretch of the Kiratpur-Manali highway. In his letter, Thakur mentioned that continuous landslides, flash floods, and traffic jams, often lasting several hours, had rendered the Mandi-Kullu highway section unsafe for travel for over a month. "These conditions have caused immense hardship to the commuters, farmers, traders, and the general public with significant economic losses. Under such circumstances, the continued collection of toll at Takoli toll plaza has caused considerable resentment among the public. Many view it as both morally and legally untenable when the highway is in such a severely disrupted state and normal traffic flow is impossible," read the letter. Thakur further stated that the minister should order the shutting down of the toll plaza until the highway situation improved. In the meantime, the Mandi deputy commissioner should order the suspension of the toll tax collection at Takoli by invoking Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, he emphasised. Meanwhile, the Kiratpur-Manali highway was open for traffic at the landslide-prone zones in Mandi district, even as 359 roads remained blocked throughout the state Sunday morning. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), 214 roads remained blocked in Mandi district, 91 in Kullu, 22 in Kangra, 13 in Shimla, seven in Una, six in Sirmaur, and four in Solan district. A total of 520 water supply schemes also remained affected in the state, with the highest 367 in Kullu district, followed by 78 in Mandi, and 72 in Kangra district. Many areas also faced power outages as 145 transformers remained non-functional, with the highest 85 in Mandi district and 50 in Kullu district. Body of West Bengal pilgrim recovered (BOX) The Kinnaur police on Sunday claimed to have found the body of Dukhi Ram Sarkar near Gauri Kund. He was a part of the Kinner Kailash Yatra and went missing on Aug 7. The 38-year-old was a native of South Dumdum, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. After the police got the information that Sarkar was last seen at the Kinner Kailash peak, a quick reaction team was constituted, but the body of the pilgrim was found near the Gauri Kund on Friday, Aug 8. The Kinner Kailash Yatra started on July 15, and is scheduled to end on August 30. Till now, three pilgrims have lost their lives, and over 1,100 stranded pilgrims have been rescued by the teams from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the district police.
