Coimbatore Corporation's foot overbridge proposal at Gandhipuram and Ukkadam awaits State government approval

The Coimbatore Corporation's plan to construct foot overbridges (FOBs) in Gandhipuram and Ukkadam is awaiting approval from the State government. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) have been submitted, with an estimated cost of ₹8 crore for each location. Owing to its proximity to Town, Central, and Thiruvalluvar bus termini, Gandhipuram Junction witnesses heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic. In response, the Corporation has proposed three foot overbridges: one across Bharathiar Road linking the Thiruvalluvar and Town bus stands; another connecting the Town Bus Stand to Cross Cut Road; and a third across Dr. Nanjappa Road providing access to the Central Bus Stand. In Ukkadam, one bridge is planned between the bus stand and Smart City Lake, and another near the proposed second terminal of Ukkadam bus stand. A Corporation official said the DPR was submitted earlier this month, and the project, to be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, will feature staircases, escalators, lifts, and designated space for advertisements. 'We are awaiting administrative sanction from the State government. Work will begin once it is received,' the official said. K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, recalled that a subway had earlier been planned along the Gandhipuram flyover with budgetary allocation, but was dropped by the Highways Department. He welcomed the Corporation's move to build FOBs, but cautioned that permitting advertisements on them could pose a road safety risk by distracting drivers and increasing the likelihood of accidents.

CM Chandrababu Naidu invites Singapore firms to Visakhapatnam Partnership Summit on Nov 14

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu showcased Andhra Pradesh as a premier investment destination to the industrialists and assured them of complete security to their investments. He promoted the upcoming Visakhapatnam Partnership Summit in November and explored collaboration in ports, startups, and infrastructure. Addressing the AP-Singapore Business Forum, Naidu presented the Swarna Andhra Vision 2047 blueprint and emphasised the shift from Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to a Public-Private-People (P4) model focused on inclusive growth. He invited Singaporean firms to the November 14–15 summit in Visakhapatnam, calling a perfect platform to formalise partnerships. 'My 2014 visit for Amaravati's master plan began our collaboration. Though ties have faced challenges, we are now rebuilding them. Singapore's governance and planning continue to inspire us,' he said. Highlighting AP's investor-friendly policies, he noted the State's growing infrastructure, sector-specific industrial policies, and three major industrial corridors: Visakhapatnam–Chennai, Bengaluru–Hyderabad, and Bengaluru–Chennai, which are focused on petrochemicals, food processing, and renewable energy. AP handles 30% of India's maritime cargo and is expanding its six operational ports with four more underway, he said. He also visited Singapore's upcoming Tuas Port and held discussions with Vincent, Regional CEO of the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), on AI integration, automation, and green port strategies. He said AP aims to develop a port every 50 km and adopt global standards in port-led industrialisation through potential joint ventures and tech transfer. The delegation also explored real-time cargo tracking and surrounding ecosystem development for ports. A proposal for an AP-Singapore Startup Festival to support young entrepreneurs was welcomed by Naidu, who affirmed his government's strong backing for innovation and enterprise. Ministers Nara Lokesh, P Narayana, TG Bharath, and senior officials were part of the AP delegation.

New building byelaws in Lucknow, JPNIC revival on the cards

Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) is likely to put up three major proposals—adoption of new building byelaws, approval of a bidding for the operationalisation of Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) and changes in residential layout provisions—for discussion in the upcoming board meeting expected to be held in the first week of August, officials said. JPNIC (File) Two of the proposals have even received approval from the state government, a LDA official said. Taller buildings, high-rise audits The proposed byelaws significantly ease height and density restrictions. The changes allow a higher Floor Area Ratio (FAR), enabling developers to build taller and denser buildings. 'These reforms are expected to increase housing supply, stabilise property prices, and improve urban affordability,' said a senior LDA official. To ensure safety, LDA will begin mandatory structural audits of all high-rise buildings, both government and private, especially those over 10 years old, the official said. 'We have identified ageing buildings like Vikasdeep and Brahmkunj for priority inspection. The process will be carried out by empanelled structural audit agencies,' the official added. JPNIC bidding LDA will also place the proposal to initiate bidding for the stalled JPNIC project. On July 3, LDA was given charge of the 20-acre complex and directed to operationalise the centre through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. 'The bidding plan is ready and will be presented at the board meeting. Once approved, we'll float tenders,' the official confirmed. Sanctioned in 2013 with a budget of ₹864 crore, JPNIC has remained non-functional since 2017. LDA will recover the construction cost of ₹821.74 crore over 30 years, as was stated in an earlier HT report. The third proposal involves amending the layout provisions of various residential colonies to align with the updated norms under the new byelaws. These revisions aim to streamline land use and future development planning.
