NGT stays ‘illegal' concrete plant near SGNP
The bench of justices Dinesh Kumar Singh and Dr Vijay Kulkarni passed the order on a petition filed by Vanshakti, a Mumbai-based nonprofit, which alleged that the RMC plant was functioning illegally, without due permissions, and its operations were destroying the ecology around the Chene and Bhayander Pada villages.
In the petition, Vanshakti claimed that over 27 plots in the two forested villages were affected due to the RMC plant. The top soil had been cleared illegally to set up the plant, cement sludge had been dumped on site, and dust emanated constantly from the casting yard of the plant, directly affecting the ecology of the ESZ contiguous to the SGNP, the petition alleged. Transportation of raw materials and cement using multi-axle vehicles, dumpers and trucks further spread dust in the area and affected various sensitive flora and fauna, it noted.
The petition further alleged J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd did not have requisite permissions for the plant as the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had failed to provide to Vanashakti copies of applications by the company to establish and operate the plant as well as site inspection reports. The nonprofit had sought these documents in June 2024 under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, but in July 2024, the MPCB reverted saying the documents were not available on record.
The chief conservator of forests and the director of SGNP told the NGT bench via affidavits that the RMC plant was indeed located in the ESZ of the national park. The SGNP's ESZ monitoring committee had inquired via a letter to J Kumar Infraprojects dated January 30, 2025 if the plant had the relevant permissions, the chief conservator of forests said in his affidavit. The committee was also contemplating action on the company under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the affidavit mentioned.
Advocate Zaman Ali, appearing for Vanshakti, sought a prohibitory order from the tribunal against the company.
The tribunal, after hearing both sides, issued an interim order restricting the company from operating the RMC plant. It will adjudicate on the alleged illegality of the plant in due course.
HT reached out to J Kumar Infraprojects' spokesperson for comments on the development, but there was no response from the company.

The Jammu & Kashmir Crime Branch Sunday booked the managing director and several executives of a Hyderabad-based firm, Capital Protection Force Pvt Ltd, over a multi-crore investment app scam in which a serving Army Major General too lost over `2 crore. The case was registered following complaints from two people including the Army officer, who lost money investing through the 'Falcon Invoice Discounting app', an officer said. The firm's MD, Amardeep Kumar and directors Anita Kumari and Sandeep Kumar were named in the complaints. According to the FIR, Amardeep Kumar, an Indian national residing in Dubai, is the main accused in the multi-crore Ponzi-style fraud in which many Indian investors were affected. The Crime Branch said the company's officials fraudulently collected and misled investors with fabricated vendor profiles via social media promotions, fake deals and baseless claims of partnerships with reputed multinational companies. The first complainant, the Major General, had been duped of more than `2.21 crore. Repayment was promised but never made by the company. The complaint also said the company had closed operations without returning the amount.

Punjab: 2 men open fire at Hoshiarpur YouTuber's house, none hurt
Two unidentified bike-borne miscreants fired gunshots at the house of a social media influencer (YouTuber), Simran Sikand, alias Sam, in Model Town locality on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. No one was injured in the incident. The assailants fled before a cop deployed in family's security could respond. Sikand claimed that Bhatti threatened him with a grenade attack at his house, following which the YouTuber was provided police security. He revealed that several attempts have been made on him and his family in the recent past and that he had received a threat from Pakistan-based don Shahzad Bhatti in March. 'In a video call, Bhatti had told me that I was his target,' claimed Sam. Bhatti had taken the responsibility for a grenade attack at the house of Jalandhar-based YouTuber Rozar Sandhu and senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia earlier this year. Sam alleged that he had conveyed his security concerns to senior police officers many times but he was not provided proper security. 'One of the two security personnel deployed at my house is physically challenged and incapable of defending my family,' he added. An FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act has been registered at the Model Town police station, said police, and further investigation is underway. Telangana high court denies official's appeal for call data records & diary entries in corruption case
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court recently dismissed an appeal filed by a govt employee facing corruption charges. He sought call data records of the complainant in the case and also copies of the entries from the general diary of the office of superintendent of police, ACB Ranga Reddy Range. The accused official, who was was booked on corruption charges in 2019, requested the records under the RTI Act. A division bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice P Sam Koshy observed that the information sought by the accused official could impede prosecution or threaten witnesses and, therefore, cannot be provided under the RTI Act. The HC, after examining his argument and that of the govt counsel, upheld the PIO's response of denying the information and the subsequent responses to the first and second appeals.
