#SHOWBIZ: 'Blood Brothers' collects RM62mil at box office, sequel in the works

KUALA LUMPUR: Blood Brothers: Bara Naga continues its reign at the box office, raking in a staggering RM62 million in just 20 days (including early screenings) and solidifying its place among Malaysia's highest-grossing films.
The film's success was celebrated in grand fashion with a massive event in Bukit Bintang on Wednesday night.
Around 1,500 fans thronged the iconic tourist hotspot, where giant LED screens showcased the film's impressive RM62 million haul.
The celebration was graced by the presence of producer Datuk Yusof Haslam, along with co-directors Syafiq Yusof and Abhilash Chandra.
The film's stars – Sharnaaz Ahmad, Syafiq Kyle, Shukri Yahaya, Syazwan Zulkifly, Andy Teh, Irfan Zaini, Zamarul Hisham, Ray Dap Dap, Amir Nafis, and Razib Salimin – added to the evening's glamour.
Adding a touch of intrigue, 30 black-suited figures, evoking the image of bodyguards, "took over" the area, injecting an air of tension and drama, and bringing the gritty world of "Blood Brothers" to life.
The night's electric atmosphere was further heightened by an acoustic performance from Genji Busker, who performed the film's theme song, "Bara Jiwa."
"The response has been truly overwhelming and extraordinary. All praise to God for this success, and any shortcomings are our own," said Yusof.
"I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our audiences, who continue to champion Malaysian cinema.
"I am incredibly thankful for this achievement and for the constant innovation that is driving our film industry forward.
"The passionate support of our viewers is our greatest inspiration, and we hope that our films continue to entertain and resonate deeply with everyone."
Yusof expressed confidence that Blood Brothers would surpass the collection of his son Syafiq's 2024 action film, Sheriff: Narko Integriti, which currently holds the No. 2 spot among Malaysia's highest-grossing local films.
"I am confident that Blood Brothers can exceed Sheriff's RM64 million collection," he told Harian Metro.
"I have produced 12 films, and Blood Brothers has received extensive promotion and publicity from co-producer Primeworks Studios, including the cast.
"So far, all the Blood Brothers actors have willingly participated in the film's nationwide tour to meet with audiences. The cast's involvement has been invaluable."
Yusof also revealed ongoing negotiations to screen Blood Brothers in other countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
"I believe it's time for us to take our local films abroad. Therefore, I am determined to negotiate with several countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia," he said.
"We have received approval from Thailand for Blood Brothers to be screened there, possibly in June.
"Before that, we need to allocate an additional budget for the language translation process, which I am happy to do to ensure its success."
Meanwhile, Syafiq expressed his gratitude to his father, Yusof, whose company, Skop Productions, provided half of the RM7 million budget for Blood Brothers, and to Primeworks Studios for their extensive promotional support.
"Thank you, especially to my father, for investing in Blood Brothers, and to Primeworks Studios for their invaluable assistance with promotions," Syafiq said.
"I've given my best to this film, and I'm incredibly grateful to the audience for their support. We'll be back with a sequel, Blood Brothers Part 2: Perang Naga!"
The success of Blood Brothers: Bara Naga marks a watershed moment, demonstrating the potential of local action films and paving the way for more ambitious and high-quality productions.
It also reflects a growing appreciation among Malaysian audiences for homegrown films that deliver a world-class cinematic experience.
Blood Brothers: Bara Naga is currently showing in cinemas across Malaysia, as well as in Singapore and Brunei.

Former Category III star Amy Yip was given the Actress of the 80s Era laurel by the Malaysia Dato Foundation earlier in January. Photo: China Press Former Category III actress Amy Yip recently marked her 59th birthday in style with a party at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong. The occasion drew a host of high-profile figures – including actors Bowie Wu and Raymond Wong, Emperor Capital Group chairperson Daisy Yeung, the mother of acclaimed actress Charmaine Sheh and more. Adding a fun touch to the night, Yip wowed guests with a lively performance of the 1980s classic It's A Small World , originally sung by Priscilla Chan. She also turned heads with two looks – one featuring a platinum blonde bob and black dress, reportedly inspired by American pop icon Lady Gaga's Poker Face era, and another with a neat updo and sparkling sequin dress, channeling the playful energy of Tinkerbell. In a speech, Yip said she threw the grand bash simply because she wanted to have fun and celebrate with all her friends. 'I believe that when you're kind to others, it will come back to you. Seeing so many guests dressed beautifully to attend my birthday party… I feel so touched,' she added. As for the highlight of the night, it came when Yip's Malaysian business partner Evian Chong took the stage to personally present her with the Most Influential Actress of the 80s Era award. The honour was bestowed by the Malaysia Dato Foundation, which celebrates the contributions of various individuals in their respective fields, earlier in January. 'I came from the film industry, but after meeting Evian, I got the opportunity to venture into the world of business and invest in hotels. I'll keep learning from her … This year has already been amazing, but I hope next year will be even better,' Yip said. For the record, Yip began investing in hotels after getting acquainted with Chong, managing director of Malaysian hospitality company Evians Holdings. The actress launched her first boutique hotel in Penang last year and has already invested in a second hotel in the state – a durian-themed establishment as she loves eating durian.

#SHOWBIZ: Sofyank teams up with HK superstar Louis Koo in viral promo

KUALA LUMPUR: A surprise collaboration between Hong Kong screen legend Louis Koo and Malaysia's very own VFX prodigy Sofyank has taken local social media by storm, following the release of a promotional video for Koo's film Behind The Shadow. The impressive 50-second spot racked up over a million views in just 12 hours, and for Sofyank, the experience was surreal. "Louis is one of the first Hong Kong actors I've ever worked with. I grew up watching his movies — to now share the screen with him feels like a dream come true," shared Sofyank. Despite Koo's packed schedule, the video shoot was completed in 20 minutes. "He looked really serious at first, but he was incredibly down-to-earth. In fact, it was he who suggested some comedic moments — including the popcorn bit," added Sofyank. The video features Sofyank walking through a cinema hallway holding popcorn, before accidentally bumping into a crowd and dropping it. Koo "steps out" of a movie poster and hands him a fresh box — while dropping some Bahasa Malaysia lines in his Cantonese-accented voice: "Jom sapot!" (Let's support!). Netizens praised their pairing as refreshing and heartwarming. "We asked Louis if he'd be willing to try speaking in Malay, even though it's not a language he's familiar with — and he was totally up for it," said Sofyank. Behind The Shadow was shot entirely in Malaysia, with a cast and crew of nearly 100 local talents. Koo previously shared his admiration for Malaysia's film industry, noting its professionalism, quick pace and strong creative energy. "I was impressed by how committed and responsive the Malaysian crew were. It was great to see how they handled spontaneous scenes so well," he said. Sofyank said: "This film proves that it's not just Western studios, but also those in Asia, that now recognise Malaysia's potential. I hope to bring Malaysian creativity to the global stage. And I'm thrilled to see more international filmmakers acknowledging our local talent." Behind The Shadow stars Koo as a detective entangled in a mysterious crime filled with suspense and unexpected turns. The film is set in recognisable Malaysian locations — from bustling night markets and food courts to schools, pedestrian bridges and urban backstreets. Behind The Shadow officially opens in cinemas today.
