There are few more spectacular sights in nature than the slimmest possible crescent moon, and on Friday, July 25, skywatchers around the world will get a chance to see just that. Just after sunset, as the sky begins to darken, a 2%-lit waxing crescent moon will appear just hours after being in its invisible new phase. Here's how, when and where to see it.
Where And When To Look
On Friday, the slender crescent moon will appear shortly after sunset and set soon after, which leaves only a short window to catch it before it vanishes in twilight. So head outside immediately after sunset and look to the northwestern horizon. The moon will sit extremely low on the horizon. In perfect conditions, you'll see a delicate, razor-thin curve of moonlight glowing faintly against the dusk sky.
Observing Tips
To catch the slender sliver of moonlight, your observing location spot will need to give you a completely unobstructed line of sight. Think open fields, high balconies or hilltops — a flat, unobstructed view is essential. You'll also need ideal conditions because any cloud on the horizon will probably block your view. With those in hand, use a pair of binoculars to find the crescent moon. With persistence — and some optical help — the beautiful and rarely seen sight will be yours.

The moon is always half-lit by the sun, but from the surface of the Earth, it doesn't look that way. That's because the moon is constantly orbiting, getting further from the sun as it waxes to full moon, then closer to it as it wanes to a new moon. What's Next In The Night Sky
On Saturday, July 26, a slightly brighter, higher waxing crescent moon will shine near Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation Leo, the lion. They'll be about two degrees apart in the post-sunset western sky. A few nights later, don't miss the Delta Aquariid and Alpha Capricornid meteor showers peak on July 29/30, which should see a flurry of shooting stars in the pre-dawn sky.

Close encounter with great white shark near Halifax sparks awe, disbelief
A Dalhousie University student studying marine biology is sharing a breathtaking photo of a great white shark she took while on a recent research expedition off the coast of Halifax. Geraldine Fernandez snapped the picture Wednesday from a cage atop a boat operated by Atlantic Shark Expeditions near Sambro, a rural fishing community in the Halifax Regional Municipality. The male shark can be seen rising out of the water, staring almost directly at the camera, with his mouth agape and his teeth showing. For some, the image may be menacing. But for Fernandez, who is studying to become a shark biologist, coming up close and personal with the shark was closer to love at first bite. "The whole interaction was [one of] the most elegant, graceful and natural interactions that I have personally ever had with a shark," she said Friday in an interview with CBC's Mainstreet Halifax. "It was able to show its size and its power without even doing anything. "People think they're these mindless animals that just attack, and, honestly, all it was doing was checking out the people, being a little curious, and I just got really lucky that day." 'Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity' When the image was shared on social media, many of the people commenting thought it had to be the product of artificial intelligence. But it came from a camera that Fernandez had attached to a pole. The shark was being monitored from a cage above, where she was stationed, and by divers underwater. "This encounter was extremely unique," said Neil Hammerschlag, the founder and president of Atlantic Shark Expeditions. His company regularly works with researchers like Fernandez. It also offers shark tours for civilians in Halifax and Yarmouth at various times of the year. "The other great whites we've seen this season, and there's been a handful of them, they've all been really cautious," Hammerschlag said. "This one stuck around for hours, they had no interest in the bait … was more interested in looking at the cage, rubbing up against the cage … and looking at what people were doing on the boat." Fernandez has been obsessed with sharks since she was young. As a summer research student with Dalhousie's Future of Marine Ecosystems Lab, she's been collecting data for a new method of monitoring sharks, which involves using a tool called a "shark bar" to measure the size of sharks in the water. Her close encounter with the great white shark is more proof she's on the right track. "It definitely felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," she said. NASA skywatching tips for August include a Jupiter and Venus meetup
There's plenty of planetary action to be enjoyed in August, according to NASA's latest rundown of what to look out for in the sky this month. Highlights include a morning meetup between Jupiter and Venus, a chance to see the Perseid meteor shower, and a glimpse into the destiny of our own sun. Mars Mars is also viewable this month, in fact, it's the only planet that's visible in the early evening sky in August. You'll be able to spot it low in the west for about an hour after daylight starts to fade, though you'll have to look hard, as the glow of its characteristic salmon-pink color is now only about 60% as bright as it was in May. Saturn Later in the evening, at around 10 p.m., you'll be able to spot Saturn, and as the month goes on it'll appear a little earlier each evening. Look out for Saturn in the east after dark with the constellations Cassiopeia and Andromeda. The planet will appear to move toward the western part of the sky by dawn, so if you're an early riser, it's the perfect time to take a look. Jupiter and Venus 'The real highlight of August is the close approach of Jupiter and Venus,' NASA says. 'They shine brightly in the east before sunrise throughout the month.' The two planets appear far apart at the start of August, but as the days pass, they'll move closer together. 'They appear at their closest on the 11th and 12th — only about a degree apart. Their rendezvous happens against a backdrop of bright stars including Orion, Taurus, Gemini, and Sirius. A slim crescent moon joins the pair of planets after they separate again, on the mornings of the 19th and 20th,' NASA says. Perseids meteor shower The Perseids meteor shower is back again, and peaks overnight on August 12 and 13. But this year the moon is nearly full on the peak night, and so its brightness will impact the ability to see the meteors, except for the brightest ones. NASA says that while this is obviously disappointing, another meteor shower, the Geminids, will offer an excellent viewing opportunity — free of any moonlight — in December. Dumbbell Nebula This month is also a wonderful chance to view the Dumbbell Nebula, also known as M27, which is a type known as a 'planetary nebula.' 'A nebula is a giant cloud of gas and dust in space, and planetary nebulas are produced by stars like our sun when they become old and nuclear fusion ceases inside them,' NASA explains. 'They blow off their outer layers, leaving behind a small, hot remnant called a white dwarf. The white dwarf produces lots of bright ultraviolet light that illuminates the nebula from the inside, as the expanding shell of gas absorbs the UV light and re-radiates it as visible light.' Nicknamed for its dumbbell-like shape, the Dumbbell Nebula shows in the night sky as a small, faint patch of light about a quarter of the width of the full moon when viewing through binoculars or a small telescope. 'Here's hoping you get a chance to observe this glimpse into the future that awaits our sun about 5 billion years from now,' NASA says. 'It's part of a cycle that seeds the galaxy with the ingredients for new generations of stars and planets — perhaps even some not too different from our own.'

Scientists make groundbreaking discovery with plastic-eating caterpillars: 'Part of a circular economy' Each year, over 496 million tons of plastic enter our world, from consumer-facing packaging and products to industrial machinery and commercial parts. But when that plastic — much of which is only used a single time — is discarded, it doesn't simply go away. Instead, plastic pollution has escalated as the material continues to accumulate everywhere from our oceans to our bloodstreams, our food, our soil, and our ecosystems. The issue has reached emergency status, with many environmental and public health advocates labeling it as a crisis. "Plastics increasingly contaminate all environments and living organisms, and pose serious risks that scientists are only beginning to understand, but that will have long-lasting detrimental impact on the planet," the Wyss Institute at Harvard University explained. Yet despite the overwhelming scope of the threat, one research team at Brandon University in Canada has been quietly investigating an unusual, yet potentially game-changing, means of dealing with plastic pollution: eating it. Interesting Engineering reported on the research, which uses a specific type of caterpillar known as waxworms — the caterpillars of the greater wax moth — to degrade and digest polyethylene plastic. This is the most common type of plastic found around the world, with over 100 million tons manufactured each year to make everything from packaging to grocery bags. "Around 2,000 waxworms can break down an entire polyethylene bag in as little as 24 hours," lead researcher Dr. Bryan Cassone shared. "Although we believe that co-supplementation with feeding stimulants like sugars can reduce the number of worms considerably." Typically, it can take hundreds of years for plastic to degrade, and when it does, it simply breaks into microplastics that further contaminate the environment. The "plastivore" worms, on the other hand, convert the plastics into lipids stored as body fat. Unfortunately, an all-plastic diet is — perhaps unsurprisingly — fatal to the waxworms. "It is processed as a fat, but they do not receive other essential nutrients necessary to complete development," Cassone told Interesting Engineering. "We have attempted to breed caterpillars over multiple generations that can be sustained exclusively on plastic, but have not yet been successful." However, he explained that through co-supplementation with other food sources, this could still be part of a sustainable solution to the plastic problem. "We could mass rear waxworms on a co-supplemented polyethylene diet as part of a circular economy," he said. Or, if researchers are unable to sustain the plastivore populations, they could potentially work to replicate them synthetically in a lab. They would do this by "identifying the exact biological mechanisms and enzymes responsible and then potentially using them in industrial processes without the worms themselves," IE explained. Other companies and labs are exploring similar processes, including plastic-eating fungi and bacteria, as well as these waxworms. And while plastivores likely won't be able to reverse the accumulation of plastic pollution on a global scale, they could offer an important and low-impact way to help tackle the problem.
