Eagles' rookie WR joins a growing list of players to watch in preseason games
Do this job long enough, and people will often ask you a question: 'What do you talk about when the Philadelphia Eagles' season ends?' Typically, that question is answered by stating the following. When exactly does football season end?
February alone brings the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Then, we're discussing collegiate prospects, Pro Days, and Top 30 visits until the NFL Draft in April.
Once that's done, we're on to rookie minicamps, OTAs, mandatory minicamps, and training camp. Guess what? Another rookie seems to be turning heads.
We know who the Eagles' top three wide receivers are. There are also tons of talented players competing for a possible three available spots on the 53-man roster.
Eagles' preseason practices cast a spotlight on another rookie WR
Terrace Marshall had a physical setback and missed some time at training camp practice. That opened the door for some of the young guys, and they wasted no time in walking right through.
Elijah Cooks has turned heads. He has been the fourth-best receiver at camp, but another rookie has also made a name for himself.
Write Darius Cooper's name down if you haven't already. He earned some unprompted praise from his head coach during a recent Nick Sirianni press conference. An Eagles executive echoed Coach's words while speaking with Sports Illustrated.
"The kid keeps making plays". Anyone who has seen him work will agree with the sentiment. The undrafted rookie provided two highlight-reel moments recently.
He laid out to snag one during an end-of-game situational drill, and he beat fifth-round draftee Mac McWilliams on a slot fade from Tanner McKee during another session. McWilliams has been impressive too, but he gives up an inch in height and 25 pounds to the more stout Cooper.
Cooper isn't expected to make the 53-man roster, but the Eagles hope the 76 receptions, 1,450 yards receiving, and 14 TDs translate. The level of competition he is seeing now far exceeds what he saw with the Tarleton State Texans, but it is good to see he is making the most of opportunities.

Mahomes, Chiefs starters to play in preseason opener against Cardinals
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is glad that coach Andy Reid is sending him onto the field with the rest of their starters when Kansas City visits the Arizona Cardinals for their preseason opener Saturday night. 'I don't necessarily look forward to getting hit,' Mahomes added with a smile Thursday. Getting hit is exactly why some teams have eschewed playing starters at all in the preseason. When coaches finally decided it wasn't worth the risk to their most valuable players, they began sitting them for one or two games, and last year, teams such as the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles sat them for the entirety of their exhibition slate. That has never been Reid's preference, though. Nor has it been that of Mahomes, who believes it does him some good to get hit — once, at least — so that he can get into the right mindset for the rest of the preseason and ultimately the regular season. 'There's always a little shock,' Mahomes said. Now, don't get any misconceptions. The Chiefs might only have those starters on the field for a single series in Arizona, especially if it goes well. But the plan, at least after their final practice before their opener, was that each quarterback will get a full quarter — Mahomes the first, Gardner Minshew the second, Bailey Zappe the third and Chris Oladokun the fourth. The rest of the offense would presumably follow suit. There are certainly things that the three-time defending AFC champions want to see out of their preseason opener. Tops on the list is their new-look offense line, where first-round pick Josh Simmons has already turned some heads as the new left tackle and Kingsley Suamataia has the inside track on replacing two-time All-Pro Joe Thuney at left guard. The Chiefs have invested heavily in their offensive line, both in draft capital and financial resources, over the past couple years, and the need to upgrade the left side in particular became evident in their Super Bowl loss in February. There is also some competition for the final spots at wide receiver, and some different names could get some extended looks with the first-team offense. That's because Rashee Rice is sidelined with a groin injury and Marquise Brown with an ailing ankle. 'I think (my advice) is go out there and do what they're doing this camp,' Mahomes said. 'It's going to be a bigger stage going up against another team, but I think Coach Reid prepares us better than anybody else in the league to go out there and play your best football. We practice hard and we practice fast so when it gets to the game, it's not that huge step up.' It's still a substantial one, especially given Arizona is taking the same approach as Kansas City this year. Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon, who held out quarterback Kyler Murray and others his first two years and barely played any starters in the preseason last year, said this week, 'I told them (Monday) night that they are going to play.' 'It's the best thing for our team this year, honestly,' Gannon explained. 'We are at a good point with our health, we're at a good point with our development, and I think this year with our team it's the best thing to do for our guys.' NOTES: Hall of Fame WR Terrell Owens watched the Chiefs practice at Missouri Western on Thursday. He played two seasons for Reid in Philadelphia. 'Just watching people grow, I'm in a great position to see that,' Reid said. ... Former Raiders coach Antonio Pierce also has been in camp, helping longtime friend and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. 'Maybe we'll ask him about some Las Vegas Raiders stuff,' Spagnuolo said with a smile. ... CB Kristian Fulton (knee) came off the PUP list and took part in individual drills Thursday. LB Drue Tranquill (back) also returned to practice. ___ AP NFL:

Eagles vs. Colts: 10 players on roster bubble to watch in Philadelphia's preseason opener
With kickoff fast approaching, we're looking at ten players on the roster bubble to keep an eye on Eagles preseason opener After weeks of waiting and competing against each other, the Philadelphia Eagles will take the field at Lincoln Financial Field in an intriguing preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night. It's unknown if Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and key Eagles starters will play with two days of joint practices with the Browns approaching. With kickoff fast approaching, we're looking at ten players on the roster bubble to keep an eye on. RB ShunDerrick Powell Explosive players are essential in this version of the NFL, and Powell will look to prove that he can run between the tackles and contribute in the passing game. WR Ainias Smith Smith spent the off-season training and learning from Philadelphia's All-Pro wide receiver, A.J. Brown, with the two players running the steps at Lincoln Financial Field. Drafted in the fifth round last year, Smith caught four passes for 35 yards and a touchdown when the team rested its primary starters in Week 18. Still, he was a non-factor on offense during his previous six appearances in the regular season and spent most of the season on the PUP list and injured reserve. He'll enter 2025 looking to prove he can contribute to the passing game and special teams. WR Elijah Cooks Cooks signed with the Eagles' practice squad on Jan. 14 after spending most of the 2024 season on the Jaguars' practice squad. The 26-year-old wideout has been a training camp standout and will look to secure the No. 4 wideout role. WR Darius Cooper A player to watch, the St. Louis, Missouri native joins the Eagles from Tarleton State, where he earned first-team Associated Press FCS All-America honors in his senior season. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound receiver is athletic and finished second in Division I in receiving yards with 1,450 (the second most in single-season school history) and sixth in touchdowns with 14 (the third most in single-season school history) in 2024. In 48 career games, Cooper accumulated 164 catches for 3,185 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging 19.4 yards per catch. OL Cameron Williams The 6-foot-5, 335-pound Williams, a true junior, projects as an NFL tackle. He started 16 games for the Longhorns and played in 37 games, serving as an anchor of an offensive line that was a Joe Moore Award finalist in 2024. OL Myles Hinton The former Michigan offensive tackle is powerful, and during the first eight practices of training camp, Hinton has been showing plenty of promise and has even started to get some second-team reps at left tackle. DT Gabe Hall A rugged and versatile player at Baylor, a rookie free agent out of Baylor last season (6-6, 295 pounds), was on the practice squad for the entire season. He'll need a decisive training camp, but he can rush the passer and bring athleticism to the defensive tackle position. Edge Rusher Ochaun Mathis Mathis was a sixth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 out of Nebraska. Mathis is 25 years old. He's 6-foot-5, 250 pounds and will look to put his versatility on display. OL Hollin Pierce The 6-8, 341-pound Trenton, New Jersey native was Rutgers' first offensive lineman to earn All-America status since Anthony Davis in 2009. He also earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2024 after starting 13 games at left tackle. DB Maxen Hook A former teammate of star cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, Hook was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2024, his third straight season earning the honor. He was the third Toledo Rocket to make an All-MAC team in four seasons. Hook could be this year's Reed Blankenship after accepting an invitation to the Reese's Senior Bowl and finishing 24th in the nation with 8.92 tackles per game. LB Lance Dixon A former five-star recruit and No. 13 prospect coming out of high school, Dixon had 46 tackles and two forced fumbles in 2024 for Toledo after transferring from West Virginia, where he spent three seasons. The former safety turned linebacker is 6-2, 233 pounds, and will need a breakout performance.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson carted off from practice in major Texans injury concern
The Texans were hit with a major injury scare Thursday. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was carted off during training camp practice in West Virginia, according to beat writers on the scene. Gardner-Johnson suffered a right leg injury while tackling wide receiver John Metchie III and couldn't put any weight on the leg, per KPRC2 in Houston. Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson Troy Taormina-Imagn Images He also pounded the ground in frustration. Texans coach DeMarco Ryans said it was 'tough to watch' Garnder-Johnson go down, calling the scene 'heartbreaking,' per KPRC2. A serious injury to Gardner-Johnson would be a major blow to a Texans team looking to take the next step after getting eliminated in the divisional round each of the last two seasons. The Texans acquired Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Eagles in March for guard Kenyon Green and a 2025 fifth-rounder after he helped Philadelphia win Super Bowl 2025. Gardner-Johnson told The Pivot podcast last month that he thinks the Eagles traded him because they're 'scared of a competitor. Simple as that.' C.J. 'We had a little scrum at practice. Nothing, just offense versus defense, but who's the culprit of it? Me,' he said. 'I guess, because we're competing. Well, you tell me the period is live. You're telling us not to compete during a live period, but it's a live period, and we're getting ready for a playoff game?' Gardner-Johnson signed a three-year, $27 million contract with the Eagles in 2024 free agency for his second stint with the team after he played with them in 2022 following three seasons with the Saints. He made just three appearances for the Lions during an injury-riddled 2023 season.
