Oil prices rise on US adviser comments on India buying Russian crude
Traders were also watching for clues from a meeting later in the day between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as they attempt to come to a peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years.
Brent crude futures rose 0.46% or 30 cents to $66.15 a barrel by 1005 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up 38 cents, or 0.61%, to $63.18 a barrel.
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro's comments around India's purchases of Russian crude funding Moscow's war in Ukraine revived concerns about supply flows.
'India acts as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs,' Navarro said.
The statement had triggered some buying interest in the market, SEB analyst Ole Hvalbye said.
'The U.S. adviser's sharp words on India's Russian crude imports, paired with postponed trade talks, revive concerns that energy flows remain hostage to trade and diplomatic frictions, even as peace prospects in Ukraine brighten,' said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at brokerage Phillip Nova.
Later in the day, Trump will meet first with Zelenskiy at 1715 GMT and then with all the European leaders at 1900 GMT.
Trump told Ukraine on Monday to give up hopes of getting back annexed Crimea or joining NATO, as he emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
'I don't believe the oil market has priced in a full peace dividend that potentially could see prices of crude and EU gas suffer further setbacks,' said Saxo Bank's head of commodity strategy, Ole Hansen.
Speculators in the week to August 12 held the first-ever combined net short position in WTI (CME & ICE), leaving prices exposed to any upside surprises, Hansen added.
Investors are also watching for clues from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's comments at this week's Jackson Hole meeting regarding the path of U.S. interest rate cuts that could boost stocks to further records - REUTERS

Canada Industrial Relations Board declares strike at Air Canada unlawful
OTTAWA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Air Canada said Monday the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has declared ongoing strike activity by the company's 10,000 flight attendants is unlawful. The leadership of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has been ordered to direct its members to return to work, said Air Canada in a news release. According to the release, following a hearing on Sunday, the CIRB also directed individual members of the union to cease all unlawful activities and return to work. The union and its officers shall provide a written public notice to all members by 12 p.m. Eastern Time (1600 GMT) on Monday, the board declared in its ruling. Canadian Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu issued a statement on Saturday saying that she exercised her authority under the Canada Labour Code to direct the CIRB to arbitrate the dispute between Air Canada and CUPE and end the strike, which began early Saturday. After its flight attendants defied a government back-to-work order, Air Canada suspended plans to resume limited flying on Sunday evening. In a previous news release, Air Canada said it will resume flights as of Monday evening. The airline estimated that 500,000 customers' flights have been cancelled as a result. Despite eight months of negotiations on issues of compensation increase, ground pay, improved pensions and benefits, as well as increased crew rest, Air Canada has been unable to reach a tentative agreement with CUPE.

Zelenskiy's garb at that February meeting featured in a disastrous session with Trump in which the two leaders bickered and the Ukrainian president was escorted out of the White House early, without lunch. On Monday, with his country facing pressure to accept a peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years, Zelenskiy showed up for his talks with Trump wearing more formal attire. The black-on-black ensemble, sans tie, wasn't exactly a suit, but it seemed to please Trump all the same. A reporter who had asked Zelenskiy in February why he was not wearing a suit complimented the Ukraine leader on the attire he chose for his latest Oval Office session with Trump. "You look fabulous in that suit," the reporter said. Trump chimed in: "I said the same thing." This time, Zelenskiy got in a good-natured dig. "You're wearing the same suit," he told the reporter, drawing laughter. "I changed." The media-savvy Ukrainian leader had worn military-type outfits to show solidarity with the troops fighting Russian invaders since Moscow's 2022 full-scale invasion. But after the February meeting with Trump, Zelenskiy switched to a more formal wardrobe. When the two leaders met at Pope Francis's funeral in Rome in April, the Ukrainian president wore a heavy black field jacket and black shirt buttoned to the collar, with no tie.
