Erasure's Andy Bell reveals how his 'superstitious' nature inspired the title of his new album

Andy Bell's "superstitious" nature inspired the title of his new album.
The 61-year-old musician is best known as part of synth-pop duo synth-pop duo Erasure alongside Vince Clarke but is back with his third solo album 'Ten Crows' and explained that the name came from the term's connection to Tarot reading.
He told Blitzed magazine: "I just love it because I've always been quite superstitious. My nan was really superstitious like 'don't put your new shoes on the table'. We're not from a travelling family or anything like that, but I just love things like reading tea leaves, so Tarot was a natural thing to go towards. Every time when we get stopped at the airport it's always my Tarot cards in my bag. I take them out and they say, 'Oh can you do me one?'"
The 'A Little Respect' hitmaker is currently on tour to promote the album but admitted that he "still gets nervous" to go on stage even after all his years in the industry.
He said: "It's kind of different because we haven't done this material before. Dave [Audé, producer] will be there, we've got our whole band that we've been using for a while. Vince has seen us, we played in San Diego and he was there. It's kind of tricky picking which Erasure songs to put together with the new ones. It's a bit nerve wracking, I still get nervous, I can't help it. I don't really like playing in such big, huge venues because I like to see people. I like the smaller intimate gigs. We're doing a combination of tracks, a fair amount from the new album and one or two surprises. Ten Crowns was just about finished when Vince and I started working together on the new Erasure album and it's completely different. Erasure is much more personal, being with Vince.
Although to me it's good just to see him and be with him and make sure he's safe. That's what's nice."

Vince Neil splits from girlfriend?

Vince Neil has reportedly split from his girlfriend of 15 years. The 64-year-old Motley Crue lead singer and his longterm partner Rain Hannah broke up just days after bandmate Tommy Lee and his wife Brittany Furlan are said to have also separated. TMZ reports that Vince called time on his relationship with Rain, although they have not officially confirmed the split. While Tommy, 62, and Brittany, 38, have not commented on the reported breakdown of their marriage, he hinted at a split on Instagram. Tommy posted a short video from the recording studio, where he debuted a new song called 'Stupid Girl'. He wrote: 'Everything has its place and time and this one hits it right on the head Stupid girl!' Meanwhile, Rain had a lucky escape in February when one of Vince's private jets was involved in a crash that claimed the life of the pilot. Neil wasn't on board the aircraft when it veered off course and collided with a parked jet during landing at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona but Rain and her friend were and pilot Joie Vitosky, 78, tragically passed away in the incident. Vitosky's daughter Jana Schertzer previously said she "wholeheartedly" believes that her father's actions saved the lives of those on board the plane. She told the Arizona Republic: "I honestly, wholeheartedly believe that the reason those other passengers are alive — it's because of how he handled it."

Andy Bell is working with Vince Clarke on a new Erasure album

Andy Bell has confirmed that he and Vince Clarke are working on a new Erasure album. The 61-year-old singer explained that the synth-pop duo will release their first album since 2020's 'The Neon' and admits that it will be particularly poignant following the death of Clarke's wife Tracy Hurley Martin from stomach cancer last year. Andy told Gold Derby: "So many things have happened in between, for Vince especially. "We've visited each other. I had some songs sent by Vince to me, and then we got together, started writing. We haven't finished. We are meeting again in August, so we want to get it right. We want the right feeling, and we'll know. ... We are a family. "And I'm going to call him after this (interview), because I want him to know that we are here. I'm here. He's not the easiest person to get through to, but we've had some really lovely conversations since. So, yeah, I love him." Andy came out as gay long before Erasure started having hits in the 1980s but felt that the 'A Little Respect' hitmakers weren't taken as seriously by critics as they weren't as political as other queer acts at the time such as Bronski Beat. He explained: "Jimmy Somerville was at the forefront for me. He was a foot soldier, and I felt like I was kind of in the background because we were vocal, but not as political. "But I kind of felt like the appeal to the ordinary man or woman, you just made (homosexuality) a normal-conversation kind of thing. Therefore, I would never go in the front in marches, which seems a bit cowardly – but I didn't want to be arrested! But we did the die-ins and all those kinds of things for Stonewall." Andy admits that it was "really scary" being out as attitudes towards homosexuality were very different at Erasure's peak. He said: "It was very scary. Even performing in the US at that time, you just didn't know what was going to happen at any time. "Sometimes I was grateful that we weren't played on the radio, because I didn't want my profile to be that high that everybody knew all at once. So, maybe I was slightly 'closeted' in my being out."
