Report: Padres get Royals C Freddy Fermin for two pitchers
Fermin, 30, has spent his entire major league career with the Royals and broke into the major leagues in 2022. In 67 games this season, he has batted .255 with three home runs, 12 RBIs and 17 runs.
Across 251 career games, Fermin is a .268 hitter who has recorded 18 homers, 31 doubles, 80 RBIs and 84 runs.
Kolek, 28, is in his second season in the majors and moved from the bullpen to the Padres' rotation this year. In 14 starts in 2025, he is 4-5 with a 4.18 ERA and tossed a five-hit shutout against the Colorado Rockies on May 10.
In 56 career games (14 starts), Kolek has amassed a 7-5 record and a 4.56 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 126 1/3 innings.
Bergert, 25, is a rookie who made his debut for the Padres in April and has had a mix of starting and relief assignments. Bergert is 1-0 with a 2.78 ERA through 11 appearances (seven starts), with 34 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings.

August 6 - Behind 2-for-4 efforts and a combined five RBIs from Wilyer Abreu and Trevor Story, the Boston Red Sox scored five runs across the sixth and seventh innings en route to a 6-2 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. After tagging up on David Hamilton's fly ball to deep center, Gonzalez crossed the plate on Duran's opposite-field double off the Green Monster. Crochet retired the first 10 Royals he faced before Bobby Witt Jr. ripped a triple high off the center field wall with one out in the fourth. Two batters later, Garcia knocked an RBI double through the left side to tie the score. Abreu also made an impact with the glove, making a running catch on Nick Loftin's drive into the right field corner in the fifth. Two-out offense in the sixth helped the Red Sox jump back in front. After Bregman drew a walk to end Bergert's night, Abreu greeted Kansas City reliever Angel Zerpa with another wall-ball double before Story's go-ahead hit. In the seventh, Randal Grichuk brought the Royals back within a run on a one-out double just out of Duran's jumping reach in left. Pittsburgh Steelers dealt major injury blow as quarterback is ruled out for weeks with broken hand
The Pittsburgh Steelers ' quarterback room was dented Tuesday as it emerged that one of its rising signal callers suffered an injury setback. Will Howard, who was selected by the Steelers in the sixth round of April's NFL Draft, has suffered a fracture in his hand after banging it during practice, according to Ian Rapoport. While the young quarterback is awaiting further tests, it is not expected that he will be required to undergo surgery. Giants, Logan Webb cool down Pirates
August 6 - Logan Webb struck out 10 and allowed one run over six innings to lead the San Francisco Giants to an 8-1 victory over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Webb (10-8) put together his second consecutive solid start in less than a week against the Pirates to score the Giants' first win in five tries this season against Pittsburgh. It was Webb's sixth start with 10 or more strikeouts. He allowed seven hits and one walk. Bryan Reynolds had two hits to lead the Pirates, who had a brief two-game winning streak snapped and lost for only the fourth time in their past 14 games. Christian Koss hit a two-run home run to center field off Pirates starter Mike Burrows (1-4) in the third inning to open the scoring. Pittsburgh answered in the bottom of the inning when Reynolds singled with the bases loaded and one out to score Isiah Kiner-Falefa and cut the deficit to 2-1. But Oneil Cruz struck out and Nick Gonzales grounded out to end the threat. Jerar Encarnacion, who was called up from the minors on Monday, hit his first home run of the season in the fourth to extend the Giants' lead to 3-1. San Francisco broke the game open in the fifth with three more runs. Rafael Devers singled to drive in Heliot Ramos, who started a two-out rally with the second of his two hits. Willy Adames, who also had two hits, followed with a two-run home run off Burrows to push the Giants' lead to 6-1. Every starter in San Francisco's lineup recorded at least one hit. Burrows' three homers allowed were a career-high, and he walked three, struck out three and gave up six runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings.
