Ben Shelton advances to Round 4 of Wimbledon Championships

Yahoo3 days ago
For the third time this year, Ben Shelton has reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam event; this time at the Wimbledon Championship.
The former Florida Gators and current No. 10-ranked player in the world defeated Australian Rinky Hijikata in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 in Round 2 on Thursday/Friday, and he took down Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2 in the third round on Saturday.

Shelton reached the fourth round of Wimbledon a year ago only to fall in straight sets to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. He'll have to defeat Italian Lorenzo Sonego to reach the quarter-finals this year, and his prize is a rematch against Sinner with even more at stake.
Round 2: Shelton def. Hijikata (6-2, 7-5, 6-4)
Shelton once again relied on his powerful left-handed score to cruise through the second round on Thursday. He hit 47 winners and 11 aces while winning 75% of first serves. A controversial suspension of play interrupted the dominant win, however.
Both players asked for a stoppage earlier in the match due to fading light. When the umpire made the call with just one round left, both players and the fans erupted in protest.

Shelton channeled those frustrations into a win the very next day. He only needed one minute to secure the win, making good on the shot he called while pleading with the umpire the night before.
Round 3: Shelton def. Fucsovics (6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2)
Shelton continued his dominant run through the first weekend of Wimbledon by winning 81% of his first serves, delivering nine aces and zero double faults. It only took two hours for Shelton to advance, which is beneficial after losing a day of rest thanks to the stoppage during Round 2.
During the match, Shelton sent serves at 145, 146, 147 and finally 148 mph. That would have broken the Wimbledon record for the fastest serve of all time, but Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard had a 153 mph serve earlier in the week.

'I had a lot of fun,' Shelton said. 'It's always special playing at Wimbledon. This is my third time playing on Court No 1. Hopefully I get a few more matches on one of these two big courts. I'm trying to make my way to Centre Court. Maybe I'll get there one day.'
Do what he says, Morgan Stanley
On a more lighthearted note, Shelton had some fun at a major investment bank's expense after his Round 3 win.
"I've been playing well this week. It's not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My girlfriend's here. Also, my sister's here. She's been here for every match that I've played this tournament so far. She's been the lucky charm," Shelton said.

He made a plea to get his sister, Emma, some more time off work, with hopes of keeping the good luck rolling.
"If any of y'all have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay). We can keep this rolling, that'd be great," he said.
The brief saga had a happy ending with Shelton posting an Instagram story seemingly confirming his sister's paid time off being approved. Smart move, Morgan Stanley.

Wife's reaction says it all as Djokovic incident sends shivvers through Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic admits his body is not what it once was after a 'nasty' incident in his Wimbledon quarter-final win that left wife Jelena horrified and sparked huge concerns for the Serb. Djokovic set up a blockbuster clash against World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the last-four after ending the fairytale run of Italian young gun Flavio Cobolli, 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 7-5 6-4. But the seven-time champion suffered a frightening late fall on the Centre Court grass that saw him scream in pain and left him sprawled out behind the baseline. The sickening scenes came while Djokovic held a second match point, having come back from dropping the opening set to stand on the cusp of victory. Cobolli was trying desperately to stay in the contest and his shot from the opposite baseline wrong-footed Djokovic, who stretched to try and retrieve the ball but ended up doing the splits. The 38-year-old let out an audible scream, before ending up lying face-down on the grass as Cobolli and chair umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore both came over to check on the stricken Serb. Thankfully, the 24-time major winner was able to gingerly get back to his feet, before winning the next two points to book a place in his 14th Wimbledon grand slam semi-final. That sees the 38-year-old surpass Roger Federer's record of 13 appearances in the last-four and makes him the oldest men's semi-finalist since Aussie tennis legend Ken Rosewall in 1974. Djokovic admitted afterwards that his trademark slides can be risky on the Wimbledon grass but was hopeful he'd avoided any significant injury before his semi-final clash with Sinner. "It was a nasty slip and that's what happens when you play on the grass. You expect to fall with the way I move and slide on the grass," said Djokovic. "It came at an awkward moment but I managed to close it out. I will visit this subject with my physio and hopefully it will be fine in two days." But he later admitted in his post-match press conference: 'Obviously (my) body is not the same today like it was before, so I guess the real impact or effect of what happened, I will feel tomorrow. So let's see." It will be the 10th time Djokovic and Sinner have faced off, with the Italian holding a 5-4 career record over Djokovic. Sinner was fortunate to progress to the quarters after trailing Grigor Dimitrov by two-sets-to-love in their last-16 clash before the Bulgarian had to retire with a torn pec in heartbreaking scenes. Sinner also injured his elbow in a fall during that match and was sporting a white sleeve on his racquet arm to protect it during the quarter-final win over Shelton. There was a brief moment of concern for the Italian when he clutched at the elbow after trying to return a booming serve from the American, but it was an otherwise ruthless straight-set victory for the three-time major winner. "When you are in a match with a lot of tension, you try to not think about it," said Sinner, who has reached his fourth straight grand slam semi-final. "It has improved a lot from yesterday to today." The winner of Sinner's semi-final with Djokovic will play either two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or American fifth seed Taylor Fritz in the Wimbledon final. with AAP

Grigor Dimitrov's Hollywood Star Girlfriend Issues Wimbledon Reminder on Wednesday

Grigor Dimitrov's Hollywood Star Girlfriend Issues Wimbledon Reminder on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Hollywood actress Eiza Gonzalez, known for films like 'Baby Driver' and 'Godzilla vs. Kong,' shared a heartfelt message for her boyfriend, Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov, giving fans a midweek reminder about his Wimbledon journey. Advertisement On Wednesday, Gonzalez posted an Instagram Story showing her hand holding Dimitrov's as they walked together. The simple yet touching photo was paired with the caption: 'Just a reminder that this cutie would be playing QF today and probably winning it too ly.' Though Gonzalez later deleted the Story, a fan shared a screenshot on X, keeping the moment alive for supporters who missed it. The post came as many tennis fans are still talking about Dimitrov's dramatic exit from Wimbledon this week. On Monday, the 34-year-old was in the middle of a thrilling fourth-round match against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Advertisement Dimitrov had won the first two sets and looked on track for a major upset. But in the third set, he suddenly fell to the grass, clutching his chest and shoulder. United Kingdom; Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) reacts during his match against Luke Saville (AUS)© Susan Mullane-Imagn Images Medical staff quickly attended to Dimitrov. Despite trying to continue, he was forced to retire from the match due to severe pain. The Wimbledon crowd gave him a loud ovation as he left the court, visibly upset. Sinner, showing sportsmanship, helped carry Dimitrov's bags to the locker room. Gonzalez publicly expressed pride in Dimitrov shortly after his retirement. She shared another Instagram Story with a photo of Dimitrov and a loving message: Advertisement 'Love of my life. I couldn't be more proud of you. You are BEYOND outstanding. This is just a moment that will pass and it'll make you even stronger. But watching you today alongside the world's best was a reminder of who YOU are. You're a winner. We all saw it. And you'll do it again. I love you.' Dimitrov and Gonzalez went public with their relationship in May during the Madrid Open, where she was seen cheering for him courtside. Since then, the pair has been spotted together at several events. Though Dimitrov's Wimbledon run ended early, his team confirmed he suffered a partial tear in his pectoral muscle. His manager, Georgi Stoimenov, shared that while Dimitrov will miss a few upcoming tournaments, including events in Sweden, Toronto and Cincinnati, he's aiming to recover in time for the US Open starting on August 24, per Bulgarian outlet Tenniskafe. Dimitrov, who has been one of Bulgaria's top sports stars for over a decade, has faced several injuries in recent years, making this latest setback especially tough. Despite his disappointment, the tennis world continues to support him, with Sinner calling him an 'incredible player' and 'a good friend.' Advertisement Meanwhile, Gonzalez's steady encouragement seems to be lifting Dimitrov's spirits, as fans continue to hope he'll return strong for the final Grand Slam of the season.
