'Never Write Lewis Off': Toto Wolff Backs Hamilton To Bounce Back After Hungarian GP Struggles
Toto Wolff defends Lewis Hamilton after a tough Hungarian GP qualifying, urging fans not to count him out. Despite Ferrari struggles, Wolff believes Hamilton can still dominate.
Toto Wolff has come to the defense of Lewis Hamilton following another difficult qualifying session at the Hungarian GP for the seven-time world champion, urging fans and critics alike not to count him out.
'I've always said that Lewis on a good weekend is still an absolutely dominant guy," said Wolff, who managed Hamilton during the most successful stretch of both their careers at Mercedes.
'He's always been strong in the second half of the season. So, never write Lewis Hamilton off."

Wolff's words come as Hamilton continues to search for his first win since making a headline-grabbing switch to Ferrari. The Briton, who has a record eight career victories at the Hungaroring, struggled again during qualifying at this year's Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing well off the pace.
After his session at Mogyoród, Hamilton didn't hide his disappointment. 'I'm useless. Absolutely useless," he said, clearly dejected by his performance in the Ferrari—a car that has yet to unlock the kind of dominance he once enjoyed at Mercedes.
Hamilton's journey with Wolff began in 2013, when he left McLaren to join a then-rebuilding Mercedes team. What followed was an unprecedented era of dominance: six world titles, dozens of race wins, and a partnership built not just on performance but on profound mutual respect.
Through the highs of championship glory and the lows of painful defeats—most notably the controversial 2021 title decider—Wolff and Hamilton stood united. 'That moment left a scar," Wolff once said about the Abu Dhabi finale. 'But we carried it together."
Even as Mercedes faced on-track difficulties in 2022 and 2023, their bond remained intact. Hamilton often credited Wolff for creating a team culture that allowed him to express his full self, both as a competitor and as a person. 'He let me be me," Hamilton has said. 'That's rare in this sport."
Now racing in the iconic red of Ferrari, Hamilton is adjusting to new surroundings and a fresh challenge. The wins may be elusive for now, but Wolff, watching from afar, remains convinced that Hamilton's fire hasn't dimmed.
'He's not done," Wolff's message makes clear. 'People forget how quickly he can turn things around."
As the F1 season heads into its second half, Hamilton will be hoping to prove his old boss right—and remind the world that he's still one of the sport's defining forces.

Colapinto reported unhurt after crashing in F1 tyre test
Argentine racer Franco Colapinto crashed in Formula One tyre testing at the Hungarian Grand Prix circuit on Wednesday and was reported unhurt after being taken to the medical centre, his Alpine team said. Renault-owned Alpine, Ferrari, McLaren and Racing Bulls are taking part in the two-day Pirelli test at the Hungaroring that followed on from last weekend's grand prix, the last before the sport's August break. Alpine said in a statement that Colapinto, who took over from reserve driver Paul Aron for the final day, had 'an incident' at turn 11, a right-handed curve that can be taken at 220kph. 'Franco was assessed on site at the medical centre and is OK,' they added. The team gave no details about how the crash happened or damage to the car. Colapinto, 22, replaced Australian Jack Doohan at Alpine after the first six races but has yet to finish higher than 13th for the team in seven starts. He did not start in Britain, after crashing in qualifying and then suffering a gearbox issue, and there has been speculation he could also be replaced before the end of the season. Also read | Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren's Zak Brown Teammate Pierre Gasly has scored all of last-placed Alpine's 20 points, with three scoring finishes in his last six races. Colapinto told reporters last week that he was lacking confidence in the car and struggling to turn into the corners in the way he would like. 'I didn't have this issue last year (in nine races for Williams), I could go straight in and be quick straight away. Now I'm struggling a bit more with that,' he said. 'Generally, the car is a bit tricky on entries and that's what we are working on, on my side.'

WI Vs PAK: West Indies Announce 15-Member Squad For ODI Series Against Pakistan
Last Updated: West Indies named a 15-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan in Trinidad, led by Shai Hope. Romario Shepherd returns, aiming to boost their 2027 World Cup qualification. West Indies have announced a 15-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan, with the three-match tournament scheduled to be played in Trinidad. The squad, led by Shai Hope, includes several young players who have been key for the Windies recently and sees the return of dynamic all-rounder Romario Shepherd. Shepherd is rejoining the West Indies ODI side for the first time since the series against Bangladesh last year. Eighteen-year-old wicket-keeper-batter Jewel Andrew, who debuted in ODIs against Sri Lanka last year, has retained his place after featuring in the ODI series in England earlier this summer. Left-arm pacer Jediah Blades, who earned his first cap against Bangladesh in 2024, has been recalled. Amir Jangoo, who scored a memorable century on his ODI debut against Bangladesh last year, also retains his spot after playing against Ireland in May. The West Indies are coming into the series following a 2-1 T20I series loss at home. Head coach Daren Sammy believes the series provides an opportunity to solidify their qualification for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. 'Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup," Sammy was quoted as saying. 'While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success. The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing ahead of the World Cup," he added. West Indies are currently ranked 10th in the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings, while Pakistan are positioned fourth, below India, New Zealand, and Australia. What Is West Indies Squad For Pakistan ODI Series? Shai Hope (c), Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd. view comments First Published: August 06, 2025, 23:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
