Frieze Seoul, Kiaf Seoul to kick off Sept. 3
According to the Galleries Association of Korea on Friday, Frieze Seoul will host some 120 galleries from over 30 countries, including New York's Gagosian Gallery, Switzerland's Hauser & Wirth, Hong Kong's 10 Chancery Lane Gallery and Korea's Gallery Hyundai.
A Frieze Masters section will focus on art from antiquity to the 20th century, and Focus Asia will introduce emerging galleries that have been in operation for 12 years or less.
Under the theme 'Resonance,' Kiaf Seoul will discuss building a sustainable ecosystem for art.
Kiaf Seoul will feature 176 galleries, 22 of them new to the fair, from some 20 countries. Participating galleries include Sundaram Tagore Gallery in New York, Art of the World Gallery in Texas, US, Whitestone Gallery in Hong Kong and Kukje Gallery in Korea.
Kiaf Galleries will be the main section, while Kiaf Plus will show works from aspiring artists and galleries.
Lee Sung-hoon, chief of operations at the Galleries Association of Korea, said the focus this year is on improving the show's overall quality, elevating Korea's global profile as an art hub.
'Reverse Cabinet,' a special exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of the normalization of Korea-Japan relations, will take place. A concert is planned with pianist Sunwoo Yekwon, the first Korean to win the Van Cliburn International Competition in 2017.

JTBC's 'Beyond the Bar' promises to refresh crowded legal drama genre
Through the lens of the law, the series to offer viewers heartfelt look at human stories behind legal cases Amid a saturated market of legal dramas, "Beyond the Bar" aims to deliver healing stories that explore the emotional wounds behind legal cases. "Beyond the Bar" is an office drama centered on Hyo-min (Jung Chae-yeon), a rookie lawyer, and Seok-hoon (Lee Jin-wook), an elite attorney at the same firm. Despite the star power of Jung, known for "Family By Choice" and as a former member of the K-pop group I.O.I, and Lee, a seasoned actor with hit K-drama credits including "Sweet Home" and "Squid Game," the series risks encountering audience fatigue with lawyer-centered series. It is premiering in the wake of tvN's "Law and the City," which airs from July 5 through Aug. 10, and last year's successful courtroom drama "Good Partner." During a press conference in Seoul's Guro-gu on Thursday, director Kim Jae-hong addressed how "Beyond the Bar" distinguishes itself from typical legal fare. 'I haven't been directing for that long, but I've worked on two legal dramas. Still, when I first read the script for 'Beyond the Bar,' I thought, 'This is the real deal.' That's how detailed and realistic the litigation cases were,' he said. He elaborated that each of the 12 episodes features a distinct story revolving around the theme of love. "There are so many different forms of love in the world — and there are also those who have been hurt by it. I think what truly sets our series apart is the lawyers who, through these stories and lawsuits, try to heal people's wounds.' On casting Lee Jin-wook as Seok-hoon, Kim said, 'He's cool-headed when working, but when it comes to dealing with clients or his own people, a deep warmth comes through. I thought Lee Jin-wook embodied both the external and internal qualities that Seok-hoon needed.' Lee described Seok-hoon as 'a rational person who always has clear answers and makes quick decisions,' adding that he had to suppress his real-life personality — he likes to make people laugh — to portray Seok-hoon. "A lawyer isn't supposed to be funny. He's someone who handles cases logically and reasonably.' "Of course, I enjoy working on fantasy genres too and sometimes miss them, but I also believe it's important to bring realistic aspects like this into everyday life. This character is truly precious to me.' "Beyond the Bar" is set to premiere Saturday on JTBC, with streaming available on Netflix beginning Sunday.

Frieze to bring underrepresented LGBTQ+ art to the fore in Seoul
Global art fair to collaborate with Seoul museums for Frieze Live, Frieze Film Seoul's art scene is set to receive its annual injection of fresh energy this fall with a series of art events during Frieze Week. This year, topics exploring queer identity — largely consigned to the margins here — will be highlighted in some of the art fair's main events. Frieze Seoul, which runs Sept. 3 to 6 at Coex in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul, returns for its fourth edition with more than 120 galleries from nearly 30 countries and a full program of live art, performances, films, talks and special artist projects. The global art fair collaborates with Kiaf Seoul, an art fair organized by the Galleries Association of Korea. 'This year's program at Frieze Seoul speaks to the extraordinary depth and breadth of Korea's contemporary art landscape, while also welcoming global perspectives that challenge and expand our ways of seeing,' said Frieze Seoul Director Patrick Lee in a statement on Wednesday. Frieze Live, the fair's platform for live art and performance, will focus in particular on female and genderqueer practitioners this year. Related events featuring 11 artists and collectives will be held at Coex and other venues in Seoul and in partnership with Art Sonje Center. One such Frieze Live event is the exhibition, 'off-site 2: Eleven Episodes,' from Aug. 26 to Oct. 26 at Art Sonje Center. Additional performances will be taking place at Kukje Gallery, and (Together)(Together) in Jongno-gu, Seoul as well as Dosan Park in Seoul's Sinsa-dong. Through performance, installation and moving image, the 11 participating artists — Yagwang, Chang Yeong-hae, Hah Ji-min, Kwak So-jin, Ru Kim and others — will explore themes of identity, embodiment and belonging, offering reflections on the social conditions and lived experiences shaping contemporary Korean art, according to Frieze. Frieze Film and Seoul Museum of Art will collaborate on the 13th edition of the Seoul Mediacity Biennale, curating a series of screenings and talks on the museum's rooftop. Open to the public from Sept. 2 to 4, the program aims to show a diverse group of international artists whose time-based works navigate occult, mystical and spiritual traditions. Talks with artists, curators and experts will be held at Coex from Sept.4 to 6, organized by Frieze, Kiaf and Korea Arts Management Service. Discussion topics covered will include the intersection of queer Asian identity and digital memory; the evolving role of foundations in supporting the arts; and the challenges faced by emerging galleries in a rapidly shifting landscape.

Gen.G clinches 2025 EWC championship, following MSI victory
Gen.G becomes the second team to win the EWC title following T1 South Korean League of Legends juggernaut Gen.G cemented their status as esports royalty by capturing the 2025 Esports World Cup title on Monday, following hot on the heels of their recent Mid-Season Invitational triumph. In a best-of-five grand final, Gen.G edged out China's Anyone's Legend, securing the championship with a 3-2 victory and a $600,000 prize. The series featured notable performances from mid laner Jeong 'Chovy' Ji-hoon and top laner Kim 'Kiin' Ki-in, who contributed to early wins. Jeong's control of Twisted Fate — a champion known for his global map presence and effective burst damage — played a major role in Gen.G's success. Before the final, Gen.G had overcome Europe's G2 Esports 2-1, while Anyone's Legend had swept Korea's T1 by 2-0. By finishing among the top four teams at MSI 2025, Gen.G and T1 bypassed the preliminaries and advanced directly to the playoffs. With this victory, Gen.G becomes the second team to clinch the EWC championship, following last year's winners, T1. Widely regarded as the second-most prestigious League of Legends event after the League of Legends World Championship, Gen.G clinched the tournament's championship by beating T1 3-2 in a July 13 final. The match not only reignited the longstanding Gen.G-T1 rivalry but also gained significant attention as it marked the first international final clash between popular mid laners Jeong and Lee 'Faker' Sang-hyeok. With their MSI championship, Gen.G has boosted its chances of securing a direct berth to the 2025 World Championship. Riot Games' 2024 rule grants MSI champions automatic Worlds qualification, provided they return to their regional league and achieve at least a playoff-level finish. Currently sitting in the legend group for the upcoming League of Legends Champions Korea rounds 3 to 5, which kick off Wednesday, Gen.G needs 4 to 5 more wins — on top of their 18-0 record from rounds 1 and 2 — to guarantee a spot in the World Championship playoffs. Since the tournament's debut in 2015, only two teams, T1 and Royal Never Give Up, had secured back-to-back MSI titles. Now, Gen.G joins the list with their consecutive MSI championship win.
