India says no to bilateral sports with Pakistan over security issues
Global tournaments are fine, bilateral matches are not
Mandaviya clarified that India will continue to face Pakistan in international competitions, where multiple countries participate. 'When it comes to global events, India is open to playing all nations, including Pakistan,' he said. However, he made it equally clear that bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan remain suspended.
'The government's position is well known, we do not support bilateral sports events with a country that promotes terrorism,' Mandaviya stated, underlining that national security remains the priority.
Pakistan invited for upcoming hockey tournaments in India
India is set to host two major hockey events, the Asia Cup 2025 and the Junior Hockey World Cup, and Pakistan's participation has drawn attention. Mandaviya confirmed that India will issue visas to Pakistani teams for these multi-nation tournaments, should their government approve travel.
'We've told Pakistan that we have no objection to their participation and will issue visas. It is now up to their government to decide whether they want to send their teams,' he explained.
The Hockey Asia Cup is scheduled from August 27 to September 7 in Rajgir, Bihar, serving as a qualifier for the 2026 Hockey World Cup in Amsterdam. The Junior World Cup is also set to take place in India later this year.
India maintains open stance for multilateral events
Mandaviya's remarks reaffirm India's consistent approach of supporting international sporting collaboration — but only within a multilateral context. While Indian athletes will share the field with Pakistani counterparts in global events, no standalone bilateral series are on the horizon until substantial changes occur in the geopolitical climate.

If the government allows the game to be happen, it will happen. I have said earlier also that the terrorism should stop. As I said, if the government allows the match should go on," Sourav Ganguly told NDTV. "It's Asia Cup, both the India and Pakistan team have been playing Asia Cup and World Cups. Bilaterals have not been happening for a while." However, earlier in April, Ganguly had said all ties with Pakistan must bet stopped after the Pahalgam attack. Speaking to ANI, Ganguly said, "100 per cent, this (breaking ties with Pakistan) should be done. Strict action is necessary. It is no joke that such things happen every year. Terrorism cannot be tolerated." Ganguly also lauded India's performance in the Manchester Test, where the Shubman Gill -led side played with grit to force a draw, despite England dominating for most part of the match. "I thought the India team was very good in Manchester. The way Rahul, Gill, Jadeja, Washington played was remarkable," Ganguly said. "A week ago they had to chase 193 at Lord's. The quality of batsmanship they have showed in the series for everyone there will be thinking it was their test match to be won. India's batting being in superb form in the series. It's so good to see Rahul, Gill, Pant, Jadeja, Washington Sundar take the game up to a new level."

So, the ministry doesn't have a say, but we will wait and see how the BCCI responds to public sentiment,' a sports ministry source told news agency PTI. BCCI, however, may still go ahead and boycott the Pakistan game at the tournament due to the prevailing public sentiment, but that will impact India's chances at the tournament, which starts on 9 September. Any boycott will be considered as a walkover, with Pakistan getting full points from the match. 'This is not a bilateral contest but a match in a multi-nation tournament. If India does not play or forfeit the match, it will give Pakistan a huge advantage. This will be like giving them a walkover, which is not desirable,' a source told NDTV.
