School Education Minister responds to queries on TNSEP

The Hindu3 days ago
Under the newly released Tamil Nadu State Education Policy (TNSEP) 2025, students would receive career guidance from Class 9 onwards along with training using local industry resources to get them employment-ready, Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said on Thursday.
He also posted a series of videos on X that showed him answering questions from students and teachers from across the State on the TNSEP.
Aimed at charting a career path for students, the government would introduce subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, robotics, coding and other courses aimed at developing entrepreneurs.
Once the SEP is rolled out, rote-learning approach would be replaced by an application-based and skill-based system. Assessments would be based on understanding, clarity, problem-solving, and practical applications. For Classes 1 to 8, a formative assessment model would be followed that tests not only learning performance, but also life skills.
Mr. Poyyamozhi clarified that Samacheer Kalvi textbooks would continue to be the base material for schools along with a mandate to update them every three years. The updation would include modern examples, local relevance, digital integration, and skill-based content, besides providing supplementary materials both in print and digital formats.
Teachers, he said, would be central to this reform and digital platforms like 'Payirchi Paarvai' would help teachers enhance their skills. Peer mentoring, modular training, and leadership programmes would help build both subject expertise and modern teaching skills among teachers, who would also be given greater professional autonomy and recognition, he added.
Mr. Poyyamozhi underscored the importance of following the two-language policy as well as removing the Class 11 public examination which helped in relieving unnecessary stress among students.

KDA Chairman demands early implementation of SEP

Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Prof. Purushotham Bilimale has demanded that the State government implement the new proposed State Education Policy (SEP) at the earliest. In a letter written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and concerned education ministers of the state, he said that the SEP Commission had given a 'very comprehensive' education policy, in a first-of-its-kind exercise. 'If the report is implemented properly, the state's education sector will change radically over the next decade,' he said. Further, he stated that several studies have confirmed that the three-language formula forcibly imposes Hindi and does not help improve the cognitive and academic ability of students. 'In this context, the SEP report, which has recommended a two-language policy with Kannada and English for the State, is a very timely step,' Prof. Bilimale said. 'It is important to note that the commission had not ignored non-Kannada and non-English languages while recommending a two-language policy. The report states that Kannada and English languages will remain mandatory as the first or second language, and that interested students will be allowed to learn their mother tongue as a third language,' he explained, adding that this was much needed in 'today's complex linguistic environment'. 'The recommendations of the SEP are mainly based on the Constitution of India, the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, The Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015 and all aspects of the National Education Policy 1968, 1986, 1992 and 2020, among other policies and laws. This is a constitutionally sound policy and can serve as a model education policy for the country,' he said, demanding its early implementation.

55cr allotted for VETRI schools

Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt has sanctioned 54.73 crore in the first phase to establish Vibrant Education Targeting Reputed Institutions (VETRI) schools to provide intensive coaching and career guidance counselling to students, helping them gain admissions to premier higher education institutes in the country. Designed like the model schools in the state, VETRI initiative would be implemented in 236 govt higher secondary schools. The initiative finds mention in the State Education Policy, wherein a high-performing govt higher secondary school would be identified per block and be provided with facilities akin to model schools. Model schools in each district will lend a helping hand to these VETRI schools by providing academic material and career guidance to students. Under the initiative, weekend support classes will be held for volunteering students of Classes XII and XII for competitive exams such as JEE, NEET, and CLAT, among others. Around 240 students across Classes XI and XII in every block would benefit, and the impact would reach around 1 lakh students. Why does the govt have to pick and choose schools for upgradation? The govt must uniformly raise the standard of education in all its schools," said L Jawahar Nesan, a former member of the high-level committee formed to frame the SEP. SPCSS-TN general secretary and educationist P B Prince Gajendra Babu echoed similar views. "The discrimination is grounded on the belief that the govt will not be able to provide all facilities for all students and only selected students will be able to achieve what they desire. Such branding of schools is also against Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution." However, school education secretary B Chandramohan said, "Though they will be named VETRI schools, they will be functioning as a hub in the particular block. Any student can enrol for the weekend coaching classes at these VETRI schools. This addresses the concerns of critics that the govt is providing facilities to only a section of schools." SPCSS-TN urges CM to hold consultation for better SEP

The State Platform for Common School System – Tamil Nadu (SPCSS-TN) has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to hold direct consultation with members of the High Level Committee, educationists and other forums to strengthen the State Education Policy (SEP). In a letter to the Chief Minister, general secretary, SPCSS - TN P. B. Prince Gajendra Babu said, 'The non-availability of the Report of the High Level Committee in the public domain and the announcement of the policy without placing the draft for discussion, denied the democratic space for people to negotiate on certain proposals in the policy.' The letter further added that the State Policy should be grounded on the premises of the Constitution of India. 'The Policy should set the curricular goals. The policy should ensure that at the completion of basic education in schools, the student should have a clear vision that caste is a discriminatory social practice, and it is against the Constitution of India,' it added. Pointing out that the concept of Model Schools, VETRI Schools and involvement of volunteers in curricular activities are against the concept of Samacheer Kalvi Policy and the principles of Social Justice, he said that a policy cannot sustain inequalities. The letter also pointed out that permanent teaching and non-teaching staff are a must for continuous formative assessment and that budgetary allocations must be made instead of philanthropic contributions.
