India exercised sovereign right in Operation Sindoor, Birla tells Korean delegation
Birla strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 civilians were killed, and said such 'heinous acts shock the conscience of the international community.'
He said that in light of Pakistan's continued inaction against terror infrastructure on its soil, India had exercised its sovereign right to respond. Briefing the Korean delegation on Operation Sindoor, Birla described India's response as 'measured, non-provocative, and aimed exclusively at dismantling terrorist infrastructure and neutralising threats.'
He also stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India's Zero Tolerance policy is being implemented 'resolutely through robust legislation and capable institutions.' Birla expressed hope for Korea's continued support in India's fight against terrorism.
Thanking South Korea for condemning the Pahalgam attack, Birla also conveyed appreciation to the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly for the message of condolence following the Ahmedabad plane crash.
He congratulated the people of Korea on the successful conduct of their presidential elections and extended greetings to President Lee Jae-myung, noting with appreciation his previous role as Chairman of the Korea-India Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Birla said India values its shared commitment with Korea to democratic principles and noted that both countries have vibrant parliamentary systems that reflect the aspirations and diversity of their people.
He also informed the delegation that the Monsoon Session of Parliament will be held from July 21 to August 21, during which key national and global issues will be discussed, alongside legislative business.
Highlighting the role of technology in governance, Birla said the Indian Parliament has adopted tools like artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance transparency, efficiency, and citizen engagement. He expressed India's willingness to share this technological experience with Korea to strengthen democratic institutions.
Birla welcomed the formation of a Korea-India Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Korean National Assembly and said a similar group is under consideration in the Indian Parliament. He hoped these platforms would further deepen parliamentary exchanges and cooperation.
He said both countries, as democratic partners in the Indo-Pacific, would continue working together to ensure peace, security, and economic progress in the region.

Roger Binny disqualified as BCCI chief after turning 70, but may not step down just yet. Here's why
BCCI President Roger Binny turned 70 on 19 July, leading to uncertainty over whether the former India cricketer can continue in his role given that the BCCI constitution does not support it. The Supreme Court-approved BCCI constitution stipulates that any office-bearer who turns 70 is disqualified from holding office. Multiple reports then suggested that BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla could be appointed interim president. However, a new report by Hindustan Times, citing sources, states that Binny could continue in a caretaker capacity as BCCI President without signing any official documents. Moreover, the National Sports Bill, which is slated to be introduced in Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon Session, could further complicate matters. While the BCCI does not function on government grants, the body is a part of the National Sports Federation, which could bring it under the bill's provisions. The new bill includes a provision to increase the upper age limit for office-bearers of national sports federations from 70 to 75. It states that any individual between the ages of 70 and 75 can contest elections and seek nominations, provided it complies with international charters and the concerned body's bye-laws do not prevent it. If the bill eventually becomes law, it could potentially allow Binny to retain his position as BCCI President, given that there is no age cap in ICC statutes. As per a recent PTI report, Binny is expected to get in touch with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and the board's legal department to ascertain the way forward. The Indian cricket board has not issued an official statement on the matter. Top BCCI officials are currently returning from Singapore after attending the ICC Annual Conference. The PTI report states that the BCCI is currently discussing whether to install Shukla as president for two months or wait for the Sports Bill to come into effect.

Mehbooba Mufti urges Rahul Gandhi to raise concerns about ‘victimisation of Muslims' in Parliament
Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to raise concerns about the 'victimisation, dispossession and disempowerment' of Muslims during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. Mufti said that Muslims in India had chosen to remain in the country after Partition because of their faith in the Congress leadership. 'Today, as the bearer of that legacy, the responsibility falls on your shoulders to uphold and defend the secular and democratic values enshrined in our Constitution,' she added. The Peoples Democratic Party leader said that the ongoing special intensive revision of voter rolls in Bihar appears to be another 'systemic effort to dispossess, disempower and ultimately disenfranchise Muslims, effectively erasing their presence'. As part of the revision of electoral rolls, persons whose names were not on the 2003 voter list will need to submit proof of eligibility to vote. Opposition leaders have alleged that the exercise risks disenfranchising a large number of voters as they may not be able to submit the necessary documents. Mufti also referred to reports of India having deported refugees by 'pushing' them into Bangladeshi waters, saying: 'Under the pretext of targeting 'Bangladeshis' and 'Rohingyas', Muslims are being pushed into increasingly desperate situations. Disturbing media reports have even suggested that some were forced into the sea in attempts to expel them from India.' The large scale demolition of thousands of Muslim homes in Assam is deeply troubling, Mufti added. Between 2016 and August 2024, more than 10,620 families – the majority of them Muslim – have been evicted from government land in Assam, according to data provided by the state revenue and disaster management department.
