Coelho said in a statement, 'I always aim to consider environmental and social impact alongside the performance of materials in both making and wearing. Working with SHIRINGA bio-leather was a particularly rewarding experience. As a South American designer based in Copenhagen, collaborating with a material rooted in traditional knowledge and sustainably harvested by local forest communities is deeply meaningful. It represents a model of material sourcing that respects both the land and the people.' The film chronicles the collaboration between CFJ, Caxacori Studio, a material innovator of bio-materials, and the Awajún community, illustrating how this material benefits people, animals, the planet, and shares a heritage with the community. The Awajún people of the Peruvian Amazon have existed for thousands of years, and in recent years, deforestation and unsustainable farming have threatened their way of life. Today, Awajún women farmers are blending ancestral knowledge with modern technology to create the rubber-like fabric SHIRINGA, used in clothing and footwear. Partnering with ethical fashion initiatives, they harvest the Shiringa tree's sap regeneratively - an example of slow fashion - ensuring the forest thrives while producing a cruelty-free alternative to animal leather. The exhibition at Copenhagen Fashion Week's Creative Hub (hosted at Nikolaj Kunsthal art gallery) showcases unique garments and accessories by international designers, including: Marimekko, Mozhdeh Matin, AERON, ASK Scandinavia, and Serena Coelho - each piece highlights the versatility of SHIRINGA. Courtesy of Collective Fashion Justice Founder and designer Mozhdeh Matin shared his perspective, 'I began working with SHIRINGA bio-leather nearly ten years ago, driven by a need to find a sustainable alternative to animal leather—one that could offer the same tactile richness without compromising my ethical values. As a textile designer deeply engaged in collaborative work with local artisans, I integrate traditional craft techniques with a contemporary design perspective.' 'Working with shiringa bio-leather has been a powerful experience,' adds Gabriel Camelo of RICAL Leather Goods, providing perspective as a material manufacturer. 'Not only because of the potential of the material itself, but because of what it symbolizes: a new era of collaboration between South American companies. At its core, this partnership is about more than materials; it's about building bridges across our continent and proving that we, as Latin Americans, can jointly contribute to global innovation from a place of authenticity, sustainability, and excellence.' Collective Fashion Justice (CFJ) is spotlighting SHIRINGA, a sustainable Amazonian bio-leather, through an exhibition at Copenhagen Fashion Week, featuring designs by Marimekko, Mozhdeh Matin, AERON, ASK Scandinavia, and Serena Coelho. Tonya Matyu Unlike synthetic leathers derived from fossil fuels, SHIRINGA is a biodegradable, regenerative material that supports Indigenous sovereignty through traditional practices. This material offers brands a chance to move beyond exploitative supply chains while preserving Amazon's biodiversity amid increased deforestation. CFJ premiered their award-winning documentary "SHIRINGA: Fashion Regenerating Amazonia" at the Nature Without Borders International Film Festival, showcasing the collaboration between CFJ, Caxacori Studio, and the Awajún community to create a sustainable bio-leather that benefits people, animals, the planet, and preserves Indigenous heritage. SHIRINGA: Fashion Regenerating Amazonia Eszter Áron, founder and creative director of AERON, noted in a statement, 'SHIRINGA stood out for its authenticity and versatility - butter-soft as the leathers, yet strong enough to hold structured, architectural shapes. That duality allowed us to explore silhouettes that are signature to us, such as the wrap skirt, and to experiment with new forms, like the biker jacket. Staying true to AERON, our goal was to create something real, wearable, and innovative. Shiringa helped us strike that balance with a material that feels both contemporary and organic." SHIRINGA and the Awajún community are a blueprint for a fashion industry that respects people, animals, and ecosystems. As consumer demand for ethical alternatives increases, this Amazonian innovation proves that sustainability and style can go hand in hand.

I Tried the $60 Nurse-approved Hoka Lookalikes That Feel Like ‘Walking on a Cloud'—and They're Worth the Hype

When it comes to picking out a pair of walking shoes, I'm a big believer that the bouncier the better. After all, I take my daily step count seriously, and I've easily worn down several pairs of workout sneakers by consistently pounding the pavement, trekking up and down trails, or strolling along beaches all over the world. Now that I'm a bit older and conscious of my aging joints, I prefer cushy, supportive styles that alleviate strain on my ankles and knees, especially since I clock a few miles per day. For the longest time, I was convinced that comfort came with a hefty price tag—that is, until now. In the past, I begrudgingly forked over well over $100 every time I wanted a new sneaker style on rotation, often gravitating towards trendy brands that promised the world. While they often delivered fairly solid results, I couldn't help but wonder if there was a more affordable alternative that provided the same level of comfort I craved. Enter the Nortiv 8 Active Float Running Shoes, a stylish option currently gaining popularity among Amazon shoppers since they look nearly identical to expensive, name-brand Hokas—but for a fraction of the price. At just $60, these lookalike sporty, comfortable sneakers are a win-win in every way. For starters, the value is downright shocking at just $60, which is more than half of what many popular running shoes tend to cost. Most importantly, the quality and comfort are (dare I say) superior to much pricier sneakers I've worn. These impressive running shoes come in seven stunning colors and feature advanced sole technology that provides exceptional shock absorption, reducing knee strain and foot fatigue with every step. They're also lightweight and breathable and look great with casual athleisure looks on airport days, but can also keep up with strenuous workouts at the gym, too. I recently paired mine with my favorite Saltwater Luxe workout sets while exploring the rocky terrain of Telluride, and never once felt an ounce of discomfort. My sister was so impressed with the unbelievable bounce in my step that she immediately ordered a pair for herself on the spot. With an average 4.5-star rating at Amazon, these budget-friendly shoes are quickly becoming must-haves for everyone from nurses to travelers. One reviewer, a nurse who suffers from foot pain, described these shoes as 'wonderful' and added that the insoles are both 'squishy' and 'actually bouncy,' which made all the difference. Another satisfied shopper said these shoes feel like 'walking on a cloud', while a third reviewer similarly said they feel like they are 'running on marshmallow clouds,' which sounds pretty heavenly, if you ask me. If you're ready to tie on a plush pair of these ultra-comfy Nortiv 8 sneakers yourself, shop this style at Amazon while they're still on sale at this low price. Or, check out other budget-friendly Amazon sneakers that are just as stylish. Love a great deal? Sign up for our T+L Recommends newsletter and we'll send you our favorite travel products each week.
