Immigration Dept Busts Dedi Syndicate, Nabs 11 In Johor For Migrant Smuggling
PUTRAJAYA, May 28 (Bernama) -- The Immigration Department busted the Dedi syndicate involved in migrant smuggling activities in a special operation conducted around Johor yesterday
Its director-general, Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said nine Indonesians and two locals, aged between 25 and 47, were detained during a 10 pm operation in several areas, including Kukup, Skudai and Batu Pahat.
He said that after three weeks of intelligence gathering, authorities detained an Indonesian man suspected of being the mastermind, known as Dedi, along with two other Indonesian men believed to be tekongs (smuggling agents).
"The operations team also arrested two local women suspected of being 'transporters' and premises caretakers. Also detained were five Indonesian men and one Indonesian woman," he said in a statement today.
He said that preliminary checks found that one Indonesian man had overstayed his visa, while the others lacked valid travel documents or permits to be in the country.
The operations team seized eight mobile phones, two Indonesian passports, RM1,173 in cash, a Naza Citra vehicle, and a boat believed to have been used for transporting illegal immigrants.
"The syndicate's modus operandi was to smuggle Indonesians in and out via sea routes to Johor or Indonesia, charging each migrant RM2,100 for the journey," he said.
He said that the illegal immigrants brought in would be housed in a hotel used as a safe house to avoid detection by authorities before moving in or out of Malaysia.
"This syndicate is believed to have been operating for the past six months.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A hostel warden at a religious boarding school was sentenced to six years' jail and two strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to three of 15 charges of sexual assault, sodomy and unnatural intercourse against seven boys between 2023 and January this year. Seremban sessions court judge Surita Budin imposed the sentence on Khairi Fitri Baharom, 38, after the charges were read out separately, reported Bernama. The court also ordered the sentence to begin from the date of his arrest on May 25, and for him to undergo counselling sessions and police monitoring for a year after his release. Khairi was accused of committing sexual assault against a boy aged 12 years and four months at around 11pm between Dec 15 and 20, 2023, at a warden's room in the school in Jempol. He was also accused of sodomising the boy at around 10.30pm on Jan 7 this year and committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent with another boy aged 10 years, seven months at 5pm, between April and December 2024 at the same location. The sexual assault charge was under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), read together with Section 16(1) of the same act, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping if convicted. The sodomy and carnal intercourse charges were under Section 377C of the Penal Code, which provides for five to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping if convicted. Khairi, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a light sentence as he had to care for his mother. However, deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni asked for a sentence that was commensurate with the crime as the victims were children and the accused was responsible for their care and protection. Khairi pleaded not guilty to 12 other charges against the same victims and five other boys aged between eight and 12 years and nine months, allegedly committed between 2024 and Jan 24 this year at the same location and at a house in Jalan Air Melana, Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan. The charges are under Sections 14(a) and 14(b) of Act 792 for sexual assault, and Section 377C of the Penal Code for carnal intercourse against the order of nature.

Temerloh accident: Driver of car involved in fatal accident remanded for seven days
TEMERLOH: The car driver believed to be involved in the fatal accident that killed two teenage girls at the traffic light intersection on Jalan Tengku Ismail here Wednesday (June 11) has been remanded for seven days. Temerloh District Police Chief ACP Mazlan Hassan said the 38-year-old man, whose address is in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, was detained starting today until June 18. "The suspect was remanded to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said in a statement Thursday (June 12). Earlier, Mazlan was reported to have said that a search of the car found plastic packets suspected to contain syabu and heroin drugs estimated to be worth more than RM6,000. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said one of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. Advertisement 'In the past, one high-profile case could take us about one and a half years to complete the investigation papers, but now we can complete them within six months. Secondly, we enhance our officers' skills and knowledge. 'About 10 years ago, we needed to dispatch many officers to conduct surveillance. But now, we just use technology to locate suspects and witnesses. So, in a very short period, we can locate the suspect or the person we want to find,' he said. Azam said this at a press conference after attending the 2025 MACC-NTU International Law Enforcement Programme Convocation here today. In addition, Azam said the MACC has also established strategic collaborations with external parties to strengthen its investigation capabilities, especially in technical aspects and financial forensics. He said international cooperation also plays a vital role, particularly in tracing and recovering assets located abroad. 'We also collaborate with many parties. For example, our collaboration with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants helps us with asset tracing and forensic accounting,' he said. On the need to increase staffing, Azam said that although there was a rise in the number of reports from 2020 to April 2025, totalling 34,819, mass recruitment of MACC officers is not the primary solution to strengthening anti-corruption efforts. 'I do not see that adding a large number of MACC officers is the solution to combat corruption in this country. The most important thing is our approach,' he said, adding that during the same period, 5,145 investigation papers were opened, leading to the arrest of 5,703 individuals. He said that out of these arrests, 2,479 individuals were prosecuted and 1,274 were subsequently convicted in court. The MACC also recorded significant financial enforcement outcomes, including the seizure of RM3.54 billion in assets and the forfeiture of an additional RM27.87 billion.
