Mamata Banerjee's livelihood promise to Bengali migrant workers leaves state govt 'in a fix'
Sources in the state secretariat envision too many hurdles in implementing the Chief Minister's job and livelihood assurance if Bengali migrant workers start returning to the state in large numbers in response to her call.
The first hurdle is the non-availability of any authentic database on the exact number of migrant workers from West Bengal, as well as any figure on their state-wise distribution.
"Secondly, there is no authentic data on how many of them are floating workers and how many are permanent migrant workers. Separate data on the numbers of skilled and unskilled migrant workers from West Bengal are also not available. At the same time, there is no estimation, even approximate, on sector-wise distribution of engagement of these migrant workers from West Bengal," pointed out an official from the state Planning, Statistics and Programme Monitoring Department, who refused to be named.
Floating workers are those who stay at their native places in West Bengal for a major part of the year and periodically move to other states for a set time to earn a living.
"These floating migrant workers do not have any specific destination, and they go to earn some money for a limited period in a year to any state where the chances of these temporary earnings are higher. These floating migrant workers are mainly either agricultural workers, whose demands in other states rise during the sowing and harvesting seasons, or are unskilled workers without any specialisation," sources in the state government pointed out.
The permanent migrant workers are those who are settled permanently in other states, many of them with their families, and for them, West Bengal is a vocational venue during the festive seasons.
According to sources in the state government, the majority of these permanent migrant workers are skilled workers with specialisations in areas like real estate and infrastructure development, garment manufacturing, jewellery making, gem cutting, and metal idol craftsmanship, among others.
"Now the problem is that even if the unskilled or floating migrant workers and to an extent skilled workers engaged in real estate and infrastructure development sector could be accommodated with alternative job and livelihood arrangements in case they return to West Bengal, there is virtually zero scope for resettlement for skilled workers with specialisation in other sectors," the state government sources said.
Even in the case of unskilled and floating migrant workers, the rates of daily payment they receive in industrially developed or agriculturally superior states are much higher than the corresponding rates in West Bengal.

Malegaon verdict ‘slap on the faces' of those who used the term ‘saffron terror', says Pragya Thakur
Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Pragya Singh Thakur, who was recently acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, said on Sunday (August 3, 2025) in Bhopal that the court verdict was a 'slap on the faces' of those who used terms such as 'saffron terror' to describe the incident. ''Satyamev Jayate' (truth always triumphs), which has been said in our scriptures, has been proven. Those who used to say bhagwa atankwad (saffron terrorism), their faces have been blackened. The society and the country have given them a solid reply. The court's decision is crystal clear and it is a slap on the faces of those who called it saffron terror,' Ms. Thakur, a former Lok Sabha member from Bhopal, said after arriving at Bhopal. Also Read | 'Strong suspicion, no legal proof': Why all 7 accused in 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case walked free On July 31, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mumbai acquitted all seven accused, including Ms. Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit, in connection with the bomb blast on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon of Maharashtra's Nashik district, which killed six people and injured about 100 others. The court said that the prosecution had failed to prove its case, including the allegation that the motorcycle on which the bomb was allegedly strapped belonged to Ms. Thakur. Speaking to media persons outside Bhopal's Raja Bhuj International Airport, Ms. Thakur dubbed the court's verdict a 'victory of religion and truth'. She reiterated her claims that, during her time in jail, she had been 'pressurised and tortured' into naming several senior political and social leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at the time. Also Read | 2008 Malegaon blast: Who were the accused? A brief timeline of the case 'I have said this earlier too that they forced me to take names of tall leaders. I didn't take those names; I didn't act as they wanted me to. So, they tortured me. Those names especially included Mohan Bhagwat, Ram Madhav, PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath, Indresh Kumar and other leaders,' Ms. Thakur said. The court, however, rejected her claims of torture while noting that Ms. Thakur had not raised any such complaint when she was produced before a magistrate following her arrest.

Country is being ruled by those who will do anything to win Elections: K.C. Venugopal
AICC general secretary and MP, K.C. Venugopal has alleged that the country is currently being ruled by those who are willing to destroy democracy in order to win elections. He said that the Congress party will soon release shocking data related to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at the Leaders' Meet organised by the Thrissur District Congress Committee here on Sunday, Mr. Venugopal accused the BJP of election manipulation and criticised the CPI(M) for allegedly colluding with them in tampering with the voters' list in Kerala. 'It is shameful that while the CPI(M) supports Congress's fight against electoral fraud at the national level, they engage in voter list manipulation in the State,' he said. He also criticised the BJP's double standards, comparing their behaviour to running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. 'The most recent example of this hypocrisy was seen in Chhattisgarh. Only Amit Shah knows the logic behind handing over the case related to the arrest of nuns to the NIA. Similarly, only he seems to understand the BJP's claim that they intervened to secure the nuns' release,' Mr. Venugopal remarked. He called for a decisive battle against election malpractice, stating that the time has come to confront and expose such corruption. The function was presided over by DCC president Joseph Tajet and included the distribution of ID cards to ward presidents.
