The Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) is set to introduce a fully revamped and enhanced identity card, aligning with the latest international technologies and standards. This initiative comes as part of the government's ongoing digital transformation efforts, under the directives of His Excellency General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for Information and Communication Technology (MCICT).
The iGA has urged citizens and residents planning to renew their ID cards to wait until their cards expire unless they require immediate renewal. This recommendation is also in line with ongoing maintenance activities at the Customer Service Center in Isa Town, which will continue until February 15. Due to upgrading works, the number of available appointments for card services is currently limited. However, customers can conveniently access eServices through the National Portal at bahrain.bh.
This latest move reflects iGA's continuous efforts to enhance the efficiency of the ID card system, streamline government operations, and improve customer satisfaction for citizens, residents, businesses, and organizations. By integrating state-of-the-art technology, the revamped ID card aims to elevate the information and communications technology sector in Bahrain both regionally and globally.
The upcoming ID card will incorporate a range of new features, significantly enhancing its digital transaction capabilities. Among the key improvements are the inclusion of biometric features, increased storage capacity, and improved quality. Additionally, a newly developed printing system will be introduced to support cost efficiency and reduce maintenance expenses for the government.
The iGA emphasized that this initiative reflects its commitment to continuously improving services that meet the expectations of citizens and residents. By leveraging advanced technology and innovative solutions, the revamped ID card will enhance the ease and security of government eServices while ensuring high levels of efficiency and accessibility.
The launch of the new ID card is expected to mark a significant milestone in Bahrain's digital transformation, reinforcing the nation's position as a leader in smart governance and modernized public services.

India will soon have its own satellites to monitor spy satellites. How the technology works

TDT | agencies Spy satellites to monitor other spy satellites. India will soon have its own constellation of satellites to keep an eye out for other satellites that might be surveilling India. The project being undertaken by the Defence Ministry, which is in the process of being finalised, will have 'satellite mapping' capabilities and will be fully made in India, senior officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told ThePrint. 'India will be focusing on improving its presence in space in the coming years. This initiative will be a part of that larger aim,' a senior ISRO official said. This network of satellites will enhance India's space domain awareness and will also help monitor orbital threats in real-time. The project is being overseen under NETRA, a Network for Tracking Space Objects and Analysis, which detects space debris and other hazardous space objects. The official said that while ISRO will partner with the MoD in overseeing the overall design and monitoring of these satellites, a private Bengaluru-based space start-up, Digantara, has been contracted to deploy these satellites within the next year. How does satellite mapping work? The capabilities of monitoring foreign satellites is being acquired by countries including the US, Russia and China. These satellites have propulsion and guidance systems that utilise factors such as orbital inclinations and altitudes to get information and photographs from a potential target satellite. Some of these satellites are also capable of intercepting inter-satellite communications and links to ground stations. Varying versions of such technology are either already deployed or are currently being tested. In 2020, the US Space Command—an agency responsible for tracking all objects in orbit—flagged that the Russian satellite Kosmos 2543 had released an unknown object into space. This was believed to be a test of a new technology that could be used to destroy objects already in orbit. The Russian satellite released this tech in close proximity to another Russian satellite. 'Space is increasingly becoming a weapon for countries. Battles will no longer be limited to just the ground, but will also be fought in space. And countries need to be ready for it,' the ISRO official said. Focus on active orbital security India is already working on increasing its defence capabilities in next 'spy satellite programme', spacebased surveillance-3 or SBS-3, will launch a constellation of 52 surveillance satellites in the coming two years. Three private space startups, Ananth Technologies, Centum Electronics and Alpha Design Technologies, have joined hands with the government to give shape to this project. The Rs 27,000 crore project is set to significantly improve India's national security capabilities.

Dubai's Blue Line to reshape Gulf thinking on urban value

TDT | Manama Dubai's new Metro Blue Line is being hailed as a model for how transport infrastructure can transform the urban economy, with real estate strategists calling it a game-changer for the city's property landscape. The megaproject is sparking interest across the Gulf, where cities including Manama are planning or expanding their own longterm transit systems. Firas Al Msaadi, CEO of fäm Properties, said the line will redefine how value is created in urban areas. 'This is not just a metro expansion, this is a game-changer for Dubai's urban economy,' he said. 'The moment you cut commute time you raise the productivity of the entire city.' Citywide impact The 30 km Blue Line will link nine districts including Dubai Creek Harbour, Academic City, and Dubai Silicon Oasis. Real estate in these areas is already drawing increased interest, driven by what Al Msaadi calls 'connectivity as the new currency of real estate.' He added that infrastructure investments benefit even those who do not use the metro directly. 'Less traffic, smarter logistics, higher efficiency - that's how infrastructure becomes a wealth generator.' Construction of the first station began last week at Dubai Creek Harbour, marking the beginning of what is expected to be one of the most advanced mobility systems in the region. Redrawing investment The Blue Line is expected to shift investor behaviour across the emirate. Al Msaadi noted that demand is already rising for housing near metro access points, while undervalued areas such as Academic City and International City are gaining fresh investor attention. Properties located within walking distance of metro stations are expected to command higher rental yields, and developers are beginning to rework future masterplans with metro connectivity as a central design factor. 'Transportation is the one thing that benefits everyone, even those not using it,' he said. 'When others take the train, you drive with less traffic. When a city becomes more fluid, your asset appreciates.' Gulf relevance With cities across the GCC seeking to enhance livability, efficiency, and sustainability, Dubai's Blue Line offers a high-profile example of how strategic infrastructure can serve as a foundation for longterm urban resilience and economic growth.
