Convicted felon arrested in Naperville on charges he was driving 4 loaded gunsguns

Chicago Tribune28-05-2025

A convicted felon has been charged with unlawful gun possession after Naperville police found several loaded firearms in his car, including one with a 50-round drum magazine and another converted into an automatic weapon, officials said.
Marcus Carroll, 30, of Calumet City, was pulled over on a traffic stop about 2 a.m. Saturday at Aurora Avenue and South Route 59 after police spotted a handgun inside his car while it had been parked, a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office and Naperville Police Department said.
Officers recovered the Glock 43 9mm gun with a 50-round drum magazine they'd initially seen on the floorboard behind the front passenger seat. The weapon had been moved to beneath the driver's seat, where it was 'uncased, loaded and immediately accessible,' the release said.
During a search of the vehicle, police also found a backpack containing a Glock 23 .40-caliber gun with a switch rendering it fully automatic, a Springfield Hellcat 9mm gun and a Glock 19 9mm gun. All four weapons were loaded with one round in the chamber, the release said.
Carroll was charged with one count each of unlawful possession of a weapon by a repeat felony offender, a class X felony, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a class 2 felony.
DuPage County Associate Judge Christine Cody granted the prosecution's motion that Carroll be held at the county jail pending trial, the release said. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 23.
'With a history of multiple felony convictions, including armed robbery with a firearm and vehicular hijacking, Mr. Carroll is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm,' State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
'The allegation that he was in possession of four loaded weapons, one with a 50-round drum and another that had been modified to allow it to fire fully automatic, are extremely troubling,' he said.

Local attorney indicted for allegedly voting twice in Peoria County's April election

A Peoria-area attorney was indicted Tuesday for attempting to cast two ballots during elections in April, according to the Peoria County State's Attorney's Office. Thorn M. Smith was charged with voting more than once after prosecutors say he submitted both a mail-in ballot and attempted to vote in person during the 2025 spring election cycle. Smith, an attorney, allegedly voted via a mail-in ballot in March and then again voted in person at a polling place on April 1, according to prosecutors. Despite an election judge's computer indicating that he had already voted via a mail-in ballot, Smith signed a form stating he did not vote previously and submitted a second ballot, according to Jodi Hoos' office. The second ballot was not counted. State health worker uses job to forge medical marijuana card, SD prosecutors say

A 24-year-old woman used her job as a state employee to forge her medical marijuana card, South Dakota prosecutors said. Alexandra Feiner, of Pierre, is now facing multiple criminal charges including forgery, offering false or forged instrument for filing, possession of a forged instrument and falsification of public records by a public officer or employee, the South Dakota State's Attorney's Office said in a June 2 news release. The woman was working for the South Dakota Department of Health where she was able to use her job to avoid medical provider certifications and fees necessary to obtain the card, according to prosecutors. She fraudulently obtained the card between March 2024 and March 2025, officials said. McClatchy News reached out to the South Dakota Department of Health but did not immediately receive a response. 'This type of conduct reflects poorly on those state government employees who work hard for South Dakotans,' Attorney General Marty Jackley said in a statement. According to court documents, the employee fraudulently created a new medical marijuana card for herself after her card obtained in 2023 expired, KELO reported. Officials said she had the ability to create and issue these cards through her work at the health department, according to the local news outlet. Marijuana is only legal for medical use in South Dakota after voters rejected a ballot measure to legalize recreational use in 2024, according to the South Dakota Searchlight. If convicted, Feiner faces up to 10 years in prison, according to the state's attorney's office. Pierre is about a 220-mile drive northwest from Sioux Falls.
