Stronger PBS-Sabah STAR ties can only help GRS, says Gunsalam

KOTA KINABALU: The strengthened bond between Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Sabah STAR is not meant to threaten the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, says Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.
The PBS acting president said that stronger collaboration between the two parties is needed to better unify and strengthen GRS.

He said unity among coalition members was necessary to face the coming 17th State Election.
'To face it, we must unite under GRS,' he said after officiating the Matunggong PBS annual general meeting on Tuesday (June 17).
Joachim, who is Deputy Chief Minister II, also reminded PBS members to remain united, prevent disharmony, and assist the GRS candidate fielded in Matunggong.

He said PBS will represent GRS in Matunggong, with Datuk Julita Majungki as the candidate.
'Let us work hard to make sure all our candidates win in the coming state election,' he added.
In April last year, PBS and Sabah STAR signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in the state election.
It was seen as a significant step towards forging political unity that had eluded the native communities for the last three decades.

GRS, PH on right track for election pact, says senior leader

Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Masiung Banah said Sabah PH has continuously expressed support for GRS chairman Hajiji Noor's leadership. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Pakatan Harapan are on the right track to reach a pact for the upcoming Sabah election, a senior GRS leader said today. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Masiung Banah cited GRS chairman Hajiji Noor's consistent willingness to work with PH for the state polls as a major reason for this. He also said Sabah PH had continuously expressed support for the leadership of Hajiji, who is the chief minister, Jesselton Times reported. Masiung said the GRS Supreme Council would decide on the matter when it meets. 'If this partnership is confirmed, GRS and PH will establish a joint committee in each district to ensure that our candidates succeed in the 17th state election. 'GRS aligns with Barisan Nasional in the latter's decision not to collaborate for the state election,' he said. Last month, the unity government secretariat announced that BN and PH had agreed to work together to face the state election, following a meeting between their chairmen, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar Ibrahim. Hajiji then threatened that GRS would go solo if this pact was finalised, but Anwar later stepped in and called for PH-BN to work with the state coalition. Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin later said the coalition would not work with GRS in the state election but would consider cooperation only after the outcome of the polls.

‘No bra, no entry': Nigeria university rule sparks backlash

LAGOS: A Nigerian university has ignited an online row after a video showed female staff members touching the breasts of women to check if they were wearing bras before taking part in an exam. Hundreds of thousands of people have viewed the video of staff at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in the southwestern Ogun state enforcing the policy that female students must wear bras during exams. In the online row sparked this month, some denounced the practice as archaic and sexist, while others likened it to sexual assault. 'This is harassment. People have different reasons for not wearing bras,' a user identified as @kaysheila posted on X. 'That's human rights violation. Sue them!!!' added another user, @kastrotwits. But others have defended the checks, saying it is 'inappropriate' for women to go into a public space without wearing a bra. Muizz Olatunji, president of the university's students' union, justified the practice in a post on X. ''No bra. No entry' is not a new policy in Olabisi Onabanjo University,' he wrote. 'OOU promotes a dress code policy aimed at maintaining a respectful and distraction-free environment, encouraging students to dress modestly and in line with the institution's values,' Olatunji said. He added that the university had also urged female students to 'shun indecent dressing that's capable of making opposite sex unnecessarily lust after them'. But his students' union would nonetheless open talks with university officials to 'explore alternative approaches to addressing indecent dressing, focusing on respectful and dignified interactions between students and staff'. For now the university has not made any official comment on the uproar. Most of Nigeria's universities impose a dress code on students of varying degrees of severity. Mini-skirts are often banned for women, for example, as are dreadlocks or earrings for men. Nigeria, whose population is 53.5 percent Muslim and nearly 44 percent Christian, has long been a conservative country in terms of social attitudes, particularly in rural areas.
