EC refutes TMC charge over webcasting contract to Guj firm

Kolkata: The Election Commission on Thursday dismissed Trinamool's allegations of partisanship in offering a contract for webcasting to a Gujarat-based firm. Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal said all norms were followed and there was no irregularity in the process. Agarwal said for the Kaliganj bypolls, an e-tender was conducted as per EC norms, and accordingly, the firm from Ahmedabad was awarded the contract. On Wednesday, state urban development minister Firhad Hakim claimed in the assembly that the tender was awarded to the Gujarat company by ignoring companies from Bengal. State finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya also pointed fingers at the EC with similar allegations. Meanwhile, a vendor of the EC — given the contract for webcasting since the 2016 assembly polls — was fined Rs 1.5 crore for not following the poll panel's norms and violating rules, an official said. The official questioned how a tainted company with questionable evaluations continued to receive the contract for years. He said guidelines for webcasting were not followed since 2016. "The company received the contract for the 2021 assembly polls and also for the 2024 LS polls and breached agreements in several instances. The same images were repeatedly shown, or the screen went blank or black during webcasting," the official said. As a penalty, Rs 1.5 crore was deducted from its payment for the 2024 LS polls.

WtE plant to process refuse derived fuel, produce power

Lucknow: A waste-to-energy (WtE) plant will be set up at Shivri by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation soon. The plant will process refuse derived fuel (RDF) made from non-recyclable plastics, paper, cardboard and other combustible inorganic materials collected from the city and nearby municipalities and nagar panchayats. By processing RDF locally, the project is expected to cut down significantly high logistic cost of transporting waste to cement factories about 500 km away. The plant is part of city's plan to set up a 15 MW RDF-to-electricity unit aimed at managing waste and generating power from it. It will use 1,000–1,200 metric tonnes of RDF produced daily in Lucknow, which is transported to other locations. The project, estimated to cost Rs 450 crore, will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) structure. Funding will be divided among the private partner (50%), the state or urban local body (25%), and the central govt (25%), with Viability Gap Funding (VGF) proposed. Additional municipal commissioner Arvind Rao said the plant will handle waste and produce electricity. Mayor Sushma Kharakwal said the project aligned with goals related to waste and energy in urban and rural regions. "The plant is expected to be completed in over two years on 20–25 acres of land and will need 3 million litres water per day. It will create jobs, produce revenue through power sales and support carbon credit activities," she said. The facility will run on RDF with systems like stoker grate or fluidized bed boilers, high-pressure boilers, and turbines. Electricity produced will be sold to state's power utility under power purchase agreement. The plant has bag filters, scrubbers, and monitoring equipment for emission control to meet norms of Central and UP Pollution Control Boards. Residual ash may be reused in construction and cement-related work.

Farmers prosper as Gorakhpur e-way turns into reality

Gorakhpur: The Gorakhpur Link Expressway has become not only a symbol of fast-paced connectivity and regional development, but also of farmer prosperity. Yogi govt ensured landowners who contributed their land for the mega project were duly rewarded. As many as 22,029 farmers were paid compensation of Rs 2030 crore in a transparent process, laying foundation for a development model built on trust and participation. Spread across four districts—Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, and Azamgarh—the project required acquisition of 1,149 hectares of land from 172 villages. Compensation payments were made through direct benefit transfer (DBT), ensuring transparency and timeliness. Of the total land acquired, Gorakhpur district contributed maximum, with 570.73 hectares from 88 villages. A compensation of Rs 1,248.28 crore was disbursed to 1,2935 farmers. In Ambedkar Nagar, Rs 438.04 crore was paid to 4,741 farmers for 297.88 hectares. Azamgarh saw 3931 farmers receive Rs 328.71 crore for 259.25 hectares, while in Sant Kabir Nagar, 422 farmers received Rs 15.26 crore for 20.91 hectares. Govt's farmer-first approach was evident when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honoured 500 land-contributing farmers at a special ceremony held in 2020 in GIDA (Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority) area. The Chief Minister felicitated 40 of them. The expressway, stretching 91.35 km from Gorakhpur to Azamgarh, is now set to be inaugurated on Friday. As the corridor prepares to fuel industrial growth, farmer cooperation and trust stand out as the true pillars of this success story.
