Driver of truck involved in deadly 2021 crash involving school bus sentenced to probation

CBS News5 days ago
The truck driver accused of causing a crash that killed a 14-year-old student will avoid jail time.
Karandeep Signh was driving on Interstate 79 through Muddy Creek Township in November when a bus crashed into his truck.
Signh pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 42 months of probation.
Investigators said he was going too slow for the conditions, which led to the crash.
Along with the 14-year-old being killed, the bus driver also died, and two other students were seriously injured.
Thirteen-year-old Karma Wilson said it all happened so fast.
"Literally right before it happened, I didn't know until everything hit," said Wilson.
She said she and her classmates were on their way home from Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland, Beaver County, when the accident happened.
Lindsay Thompkins and the student sitting directly behind him, 14-year-old Brylee Walker, were killed.
"Brylee was a beautiful soul," said Walker's parents in a text message to KDKA-TV at the time. "She was always smiling. She had the biggest heart and was wise beyond her years. Music and singing were her passions. This was her first year at Lincoln Park, where she was the only 9th grader accepted into the student council due to her outstanding essay. We wouldn't wish this tragedy on any parent ever, but we also ask ourselves why. One child fatality, and it was ours."

GoFundMe raises money for Mass. teen's funeral after crash

A GoFundMe is raising money to help with the funeral of a 17-year-old who died in a crash in Deerfield on Sunday. Joshua Mizula-Samson, 17, of Hatfield, died in a Deerfield crash Sunday morning after his car rolled over and struck a fire hydrant on Greenfield Road in Deerfield, Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan's office said. The teenager had a passenger with him, who was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with non-life-threatening injuries, Sullivan's office said. Deerfield police, Massachusetts State Police detectives with Sullivan's office and the State Police troopers with the Crime Scene Services Section and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating the crash. Mizula-Samson was identified by friends and family in the GoFundMe. The 17-year-old was remembered for loving to work on his trucks and cars. He went to Smith Vocational School in Northampton and was studying to become an automotive technician. 'He loved working on his trucks and cars, hanging out with his friends, and fishing down on the river,' the GoFundMe stated. He also loved his family. 'Most of all, Joshua loved his mother, Ashley Mizula, and father, Ernie Samson, and will continue to look out for both of them from above,' the GoFundMe read. The GoFundMe is aiming to raise $18,000 to cover funeral costs and living expenses 'to alleviate the stress and financial burden during this difficult time.' As of Tuesday morning, it had raised more than $15,000. Tools formed to make a cross hung above a growing memorial of flowers, heartfelt notes and a single cigar where the crash happened. 'You were a bright light in everyone's life,' one message at the memorial read. 'Heaven gained an angel,' another message read. Teens killed in Dartmouth crash identified

Two teens killed in a Dartmouth crash Saturday have been identified. Kevin Dos Santos Lopes, 19, of New Bedford, and Amilton De Pina Semedo, 18, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, both died Saturday. At about 1:35 p.m. Saturday, there were multiple 911 calls reporting a crash on Interstate 195 in Dartmouth near mile marker 19.4 near the Reed Road exit. A 2006 gray Chevy Equinox was the only car involved. Both teens had been ejected from the SUV and the crash dislodged the SUV's engine. They were taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. The crash is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police along with Troopers assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office. But, officials said, it is not deemed suspicious.
