Stanford hires former Nike CEO John Donahoe as athletic director, AP source says
A person familiar with the decision said Donahoe will become the school's eighth athletic director and replace Bernard Muir, who stepped down this year. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the hiring hadn't been announced.
ESPN first reported the move.
Donahoe graduated from Stanford Business School and has worked at companies like Nike, Bain & Company and eBay in his career. He was CEO at Nike from 2020-24.
He takes over one of the countries most successful athletic programs with Stanford having won at least one NCAA title in 49 straight years starting in 1976-77 and a record 137 NCAA team titles overall.
But the Cardinal struggled in the high-profile sports of football and men's basketball under Muir's tenure, leading to the decision to hire former Stanford and NFL star Andrew Luck to oversee the football program as its general manager.
The Cardinal are looking to rebound in football after going to three Rose Bowls under former coach David Shaw in Muir's first four years as AD.
Shaw resigned in 2022 following a second straight 3-9 season and Muir's hire, Troy Taylor, has posted back-to-back 3-9 seasons.
The men's basketball program hasn't made the NCAA Tournament since Muir's second season in 2013-14 under former coach Johnny Dawkins.
Dawkins was fired in 2016 and replaced by Jerod Haase, who failed to make the tournament once in eight years.
Muir hired Kyle Smith last March to take over and the Cardinal went 21-14 for their most wins in 10 years.
Muir also hired Kate Paye as women's basketball coach last year after Hall of Famer Tara VanDerveer retired. The Cardinal went 16-15 this past season and in missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1987.
Muir also oversaw the Cardinal's transition to the ACC this past year after the school's long-term home, the Pac-12, broke apart.

However, the company expects night bookings growth to moderate year-over-year going into the fourth-quarter. It expects the implied take rate, or the ratio of revenue to gross bookings, to remain flat in the third quarter. In the fourth-quarter of 2024, bookings in Latin America and Asia Pacific increased a "low" 20% year-over-year after the regions also boosted results in the third-quarter. The company expects third-quarter revenue between $4.02 billion to $4.10 billion. Analysts, on average, estimated Airbnb's quarterly revenue at $4.05 billion. Nights and seats booked, an updated metric which includes the number of services booked on Airbnb's platform, rose 7% in the second quarter, while gross booking value increased 11% to $23.5 billion helped by the timing of Easter and fees for cross-currency bookings. The company reported quarterly revenue of $3.10 billion, compared with analysts' estimates of $3.04 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Airbnb posted a per-share profit of $1.03, compared with Wall Street estimates of 93 cents. The home-rental company also announced a new share repurchase program worth $6 billion.

August 6 - Jordan Walker had a game-tying single in the eighth inning and Masyn Winn scored the go-ahead run on an error as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon. Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar brought home runs without getting the ball out of the infield as the Cardinals went 4-2 against the Dodgers this season while winning a pair of series. Four St. Louis relievers held Los Angeles without a run over the final five innings, while right-hander Riley O'Brien pitched 1 1/3 innings for his first career save. JoJo Romero (4-3) did not allow a run over one inning. Shohei Ohtani hit a home run for his 1,000th career hit and struck out eight over a four-inning start as the Dodgers dropped to 3-6 at home since the All-Star break. 'Sonny in LA' - Son joins LAFC in MLS record deal
LOS ANGELES, Aug 6 (Reuters) - South Korean forward Son Heung-min said he is "here to win" after he joined Los Angeles FC for a record Major League Soccer transfer fee, ending a decade-long stint at Tottenham Hotspur. Son was introduced at LAFC's BMO Stadium on Wednesday, where he was greeted by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and city officials amid chants and drumming from supporters' group 3252. "What can I say, dream come true. LA, what a city," Son told reporters at his unveiling. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club but the Athletic reported LAFC paid a fee in the region of $26.5 million for the 33-year-old.
