Malaysia approves 48 renewable energy projects worth RM1.87 billion

The Sun6 days ago
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has approved 48 renewable energy (RE) projects under the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism, expected to generate RM1.87 billion in investments.
These projects, covering biogas, biomass, and small hydropower, will contribute 181.25 megawatts (MW) to Malaysia's energy grid, with operations starting as early as 2028.
PETRA stated that the initiative aligns with Malaysia's goal to increase renewable energy's share in the national electricity supply to 70% by 2050.
'The diversification of RE sources will enhance grid reliability and ensure consistent electricity supply,' the ministry said.
The government had opened applications for 190MW of FiT quotas earlier this year, receiving 59 submissions.
Of these, 48 met technical and financial requirements, including 20 biogas projects (30.93MW), eight biomass projects (53.50MW), and 20 small hydropower projects (96.82MW).
PETRA emphasised that the FiT mechanism will drive sustainable growth in Malaysia's RE sector, supporting the Malaysia MADANI vision of innovation and shared prosperity.

DPM Fadillah: 'Appreciation for the People' package shows Madani govt's commitment to rakyat

Fadillah says the initiative demonstrates the Prime Minister's recognition of the rakyat as the backbone of national stability, while reaffirming that the government remains steadfast in its policies and direction. – Bernama photo KUCHING (July 23): The 'Appreciation for the People' financial package announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reflects the Madani government's strong commitment to the welfare and trust of the rakyat, said Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof. Describing the package as a message of unity and gratitude, Fadillah said it acknowledges the contributions of Malaysians from all backgrounds, including those in rural areas, urban centres, civil service, and agriculture. 'This is clear proof that 'Malaysia Madani' is not just a slogan but a national movement that we indulge in successfully together,' said Fadillah in a statement. He said the initiative demonstrates the Prime Minister's recognition of the rakyat as the backbone of national stability, while reaffirming that the government remains steadfast in its policies and direction. 'The Prime Minister has succeeded in instilling confidence that fiscal reforms are on the right track – with the people's support as the main thrust,' he said. Fadillah pointed to the country's strengthening economic momentum, noting that Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, with a 4.5 per cent projection for the second quarter. He also highlighted Malaysia's jump of 11 spots to 23rd in the World Competitiveness Index 2025, and the ringgit's five per cent appreciation – currently trading at RM4.23 to the US dollar – placing it among Asia's top five performing currencies. 'The success is not just a figure on paper – they reflect increased investment, job creation, and stronger social policies for the people,' he said. Fadillah said the measures further demonstrate the effectiveness of the Madani government's approach in safeguarding public interest. 'As a Sarawakian, I have seen for myself the true meaning of a comprehensive policy. 'The increase in paddy floor prices, rubber incentives, and grassroots programmes such as Sejati Madani are tangible responses to the needs of the rural communities,' he said. He cited the expansion of the Madani Village Adoption Programme to 200 villages, with a target of 1,000 Madani-adopted schools by the end of 2025, as well as the Madani Rahmah Sales, now extended to all 600 state constituencies nationwide. As Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), Fadillah also welcomed the government's efforts in restructuring energy subsidies and electricity tariffs. Beginning this month, 85 per cent of domestic consumers are expected to see up to 14 per cent reductions in electricity bills. Meanwhile, targeted RON95 subsidies will lower fuel prices to RM1.99 per litre, with savings redirected to benefit Malaysians instead of foreign users. Fadillah said these reforms do not burden the rakyat — they bring fairness and relief to the majority. Fadillah, who is also responsible for Sabah and Sarawak Affairs, expressed appreciation for the additional public holiday announced for Sept 15, in conjunction with Malaysia Day. 'Let us all unite, join forces, and continue to support the Madani agenda that gives meaning to the people's lives. 'From villages to cities, from the Peninsula to Borneo – all Malaysians deserve to enjoy fair and equitable progress,' he said.

Malaysia ensures welfare protection amid fuel price fluctuations

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has assured that the welfare and well-being of the people will continue to be protected and will not be directly impacted by any sudden changes in electricity bills resulting from fluctuations in fuel prices. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this is because the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has set a threshold that requires the minister's approval for any changes to the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) rate if the basic energy charge and projected energy costs for the coming month rise by more than 10 per cent compared to the current month. 'This is a proactive measure by the government to ensure continued protection for electricity consumers,' he said during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), who sought clarification on how the new Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) electricity billing structure would ensure cost fairness, promote energy efficiency, and maintain targeted subsidies for the B40 and M40 groups. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the Cabinet had approved the implementation of the AFA mechanism on June 11, replacing the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism. Under the new system, fuel cost adjustments will be made monthly instead of every six months. Explaining further, he said the government is actively encouraging consumers to adopt energy-efficient systems and renewable energy to help reduce the nation's overall energy consumption. To ease the impact of electricity bills while promoting energy efficiency, Fadillah said the government has introduced energy efficiency incentives. These incentives are provided directly to domestic consumers with electricity usage of 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) or less, as well as to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) consuming 200 kWh or less. 'This incentive is designed to encourage the target group to practice smarter energy management, while ensuring that MSME businesses do not need to raise the prices of goods and services due to the new tariff rate. 'In addition, domestic consumers with electricity usage of 600 kWh and below will be exempted from paying retail charges. This is part of the government's effort to ensure that this group continues to be protected and is not burdened by the implementation of the new schedule,' he said. Fadillah added that, with the incentives and assistance offered alongside the new electricity tariff structure, the government expects minimal impact on electricity bills for domestic users and MSMEs. He noted that 85 per cent of domestic consumers will not be affected and will continue to be protected, in line with the aspirations of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. - Bernama
