Kokate gets off with rebuke from Ajit; CM warns all mins

Time of India2 days ago
Mumbai: NCP minister Manikrao Kokate, who has repeatedly courted controversy with his remarks and recently drew criticism for allegedly playing a game of 'rummy' on his mobile phone in the state legislature, was let off by his party chief and deputy CM
Ajit Pawar
on Tuesday with a warning and censure. At the same time, CM
Devendra Fadnavis
spoke to all the ministers at and after Tuesday's meeting of the state cabinet and warned them against controversial actions and words, sources said.
Kokate had a 25-minute conversation with Ajit Pawar in the latter's chamber in Mantralaya before Tuesday's cabinet meeting, where he apologised for the 'rummy' incident and assured the party chief that such things would not happen again. Ajit Pawar is also said to have given him a dressing down over his repeated controversial statements and warned him that any such statements would not be tolerated. However, Kokate was not asked to resign, nor has his agriculture portfolio been swapped, though the Dy CM had said he would meet Kokate and take a decision about his resignation.
The CM emphasised at the cabinet meet that controversial episodes were impacting the image of the govt. He also told the ministers to avoid speaking to the media and, if a controversy erupted, to give an appropriate response immediately. "The CM also said that if this continues, he will have to step in. He asked everyone to take collective responsibility and be humble. He also said fund transfers for schemes like Ladki Bahin and for priority projects are common and must not be turned into an issue by ministers.
He asked ministers to work as a team and not just focus on their own departments," a cabinet minister said.
Sources said that in the cabinet meet, Ajit Pawar was of the view that action could be taken against NCP ministers only if action was taken against some Shiv Sena ministers who had attracted controversy. Several ministers also backed Kokate and said he must be given a chance. NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, who first released Kokate's video showing him allegedly playing rummy, said BJP and Dy CM Eknath Shinde would damage Ajit Pawar.

Maharashtra minister loses agriculture portfolio after row over online game in Assembly, gets sports

Days after a row erupted over Maharashtra minister Manikrao Kokate allegedly playing an online card game in the Assembly, the state government on Thursday shifted him from the agriculture ministry to the sports and youth welfare department in a late-night reshuffle, PTI reported. A notification issued by the General Administration Department said that Dattatrey Bharne, who is the current sports minister, will be the new agriculture minister. It added that Kokate will also be in charge of the minority development and Auqaf department. The political row erupted on July 20 after a video of Kokate purportedly playing an online card game in the Assembly was shared on social media by Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Rohit Pawar. In a post on X, Rohit Pawar claimed that Kokate appeared to have 'time to play rummy' since the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party faction could not take any decision without its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party. He added: 'Therefore, when scores of farm issues are pending and every day eight farmers are ending their lives in Maharashtra, the agriculture minister does not seem to have any work.' Kokate, a member of the Nationalist Congress Party group led by Ajit Pawar, represents the Sinnar constituency in Nashik. The faction is part of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition in the state, which includes the BJP and the Shiv Sena group led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Kokate had claimed that someone else had downloaded the game on his phone. He added that he was merely checking the proceedings of the other House on YouTube and the game popped up while skipping the advertisement during the video. The minister also claimed that it was 'a solitaire game, not rummy'. Calling it a 'conspiracy', Kokate said that the full video should come out. 'The Opposition's tactics will never succeed,' he added. The video, however, drew criticism from across party lines. Several politicians had demanded his resignation. Earlier on Thursday, amid speculation about his continuation in the Cabinet, Kokate claimed that he neither offered to resign nor was he asked to step down by his party or Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, PTI reported. 'I do not want to speak on this issue anymore,' the news agency quoted him as telling a news channel in Pune. 'I will speak after the inquiry report [on the card game row] is out.' Kokate said that he had met Ajit Pawar and discussed the matter. 'I had apologised to farmers recently during media interaction if their sentiments were hurt due to the card game controversy,' he added. The minister had triggered another row earlier in July after allegedly describing the state government as a 'beggar' while speaking about crop loan insurance. 'The chief minister had expressed his displeasure over the 'beggars' statement,' Kokate said on Thursday. 'I called him up and clarified my stand. I blame it on the lack of articulation.'

CM meets Beed murder victim's widow, orders SIT to be set up

MUMBAI: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced the setting up of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the murder of Mahadev Munde after meeting his widow Dnyaneshwari Munde in Parli. The CM entrusted the investigation to IPS officer Pankaj Kumawat, as demanded by locals, and two other officers who had handled the case previously. He also assured Dnyaneshwari that the accused who she had named would be arrested at the earliest. CM meets Beed murder victim's widow, orders SIT to be set up Munde, a real estate contractor, was brutally killed by unidentified people who threw his body by the roadside in October 2023. Dnyaneshwari and other family members have alleged the involvement of Walmik Karad, currently arrested under MCOCA in sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh's murder case. Karad is a close aide of former minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, and Dnyaneshwari claimed on Thursday that Walmik had planned the murder while sitting in Dhananjay's bungalow in Parli. The aggrieved widow submitted the post-mortem photos, the CDR details of 150 calls they had received from 17 numbers, and names of the accused to Fadnavis. 'Back when the case was being investigated, they were about to be arrested but political intervention stopped the police in their tracks,' said Beed's BJP MLA Suresh Dhas. 'The two investigating officers were immediately transferred to other districts.' The two are now part of the SIT headed by Pankaj Kumawat, who is currently serving as the additional SP in Amravati. Beed locals had specifically asked for him on account of the trust they had in him when he was additional SP in Kaij. Dhas said that Fadnavis had asked DGP Rashmi Shukla to issue the order to constitute the SIT immediately. After the meeting, Dnyaneshwari said she was content with the outcome. 'The CM was moved after seeing the photographs and hearing my story,' she said. 'Of the 17 numbers from which we received calls, nine people were spotted at the crime scene. The CDRs of Walmik Karad and his political patron also need to be checked. The CM has assured us that every angle will be investigated.' Dhas said apart from the Munde murder, many others needed to be reinvestigated. 'Three people were murdered from October 19-21, 2023, and Walmik Karad was behind them all,' he said. 'A fake accused in one of the cases is languishing in jail. We hope the government will reinvestigate them all and give justice to the people of Beed.'

Schools' closure a political decision, says Akhilesh

1 2 Lucknow: Describing BJP govt's move to shut 26,000 schools and merge another 5,000 as a political decision, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday said the schools being closed are the ones where polling was held in previous elections and SP had won. Akhilesh described the decision as against the Constitution. "The right to education is enshrined in the Constitution. BJP govt is depriving the people of their constitutional right" he told reporters at the Parliament House complex. He said it was the responsibility of govt to ensure that every child had free and easy access to education and schools should be near their homes. "BJP govt is not bothered about education but more concerned about where the polling stations would come up," Akhilesh said. They (BJP govt) are shutting schools for the sake of votes, he said. The former UP CM said all projects initiated during the SP govt to improve the education system in the state were either abandoned or shut by the BJP govt. "Like the Sanskriti schools in Delhi, a Sanskriti school was set-up in Lucknow during the SP govt. But BJP closed it," he said. He said BJP was biased against the PDA and it was for this reason that SP functionaries have launched PDA Pathshala in villages where schools have been closed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo 'BJP wants to whip up emotions: Akhilesh Lucknow: The BJP govt does not work on economy but on emotions. It wants to whip up emotions to win elections and not concerned about the well being of people, said Akhilesh Yadav. He said lakhs of Indians are shifting abroad every year but govt has done nothing to check that. "Many people fled India after taking heavy loans, pushing banks towards bankruptcy. The BJP govt has outsourced jobs to end reservation," he said. On the US imposing heavy tariffs on India, Akhilesh questioned the claims of the BJP about the 11-year-old friendship between PM Modi and president Donald Trump. 'PDA pathshalas force govt to recall order on merger of schools'' Lucknow: Akhilesh on Thursday said volunteers having started PDA Pathshalas across the state forced the UP govt to recall its order on merger of 5,000 schools. "Recalling its decision on the merger of schools is a mega victory of PDA Pathshalas. Right to education cannot be and will never get compromised. It is a moral defeat of the BJP which is anti-education," Akhilesh posted on X.
