Police operation targeting boiler thieves in North Yorkshire
Criminal gangs are targeting newbuild estates in North Yorkshire, stealing new boilers from homes which are still being built, according to police.The North Yorkshire force said in one incident in Knaresborough, earlier this month, more than 20 boilers were stolen from a building site, at a cost of around £300,000.Thefts of this type are increasingly being seen across the country, with police in the Yorkshire region citing gangs operating along the A1(M) corridor, making newbuild locations close by particularly vulnerable.Police believe the presence of several large building sites in Knaresborough, where hundreds of new homes are under development, is also a factor.
According to figures from North Yorkshire Police, 68 incidents involving boiler thefts have been recorded since 2023, with almost 70% of those from newbuild sites. The force said each incident might involve several stolen boilers, not just one.Insp Holly Nicholls, from North Yorkshire Police, said: "In North Yorkshire, particularly in Knaresborough, we're off the A1 corridor - so we see criminals, organised crime groups, travelling from other police areas, and they are really quite professional."They'll ordinarily come and do a recce beforehand, to see which properties they can target. They're trained - so they've probably got some plumbing expertise - [and] they'll have a vehicle so they can get them out really quickly," she added.
Housebuilder Linden Homes, who are building hundreds of new homes on the outskirts of Knaresborough, was targeted by boiler thieves last year."April, last year, we had 10 boilers pinched," site manager John McDermott told the BBC. "Patio doors had been smashed through, front doors had been smashed in, and through the night they had taken 10 boilers - causing a lot of damage."It comes at a cost to us because then we have to get plumbers back in, electricians back in... "Some of the kitchens got replaced," he added.As well as the damage caused to the properties, he said, in some cases, the thefts had delayed house sales, and even caused some sales to collapse.
Trackers on boilers
This week North Yorkshire Police launched 'Operation Thaw' - with increased patrols on the A1, alongside neighbourhood teams marking boilers with codes - using invisible ink, and an initiative to raise awareness in local communities.At some sites, builders have also put trackers on new boilers, with signs in property windows warning would-be thieves.
Martin Narby, who lives on one of the new estates in Knaresborough which has been previously targeted, was pleased to see police on patrol."We just moved here a year ago - there's a very healthy Facebook group already where people share advice, so anything which expands on that, where we can share intelligence and information, would be really helpful".

The trip would have been a beautiful change of scenery for the couple who are thought to have lived together in a cottage in the village of Longridge, West Lothian. But their trip ended in tradegy before the afternoon of Saturday, June 7 when Police Scotland officers discovered the couple's bodies. A spokesman for Police Scotland said there were no suspicious circumstances, according to The Sun. Adele's heartbroken mother Anne posted a heartbreaking tribute on social media, sharing a picture of the pair on Facebook along with the caption: 'I am devastated to be writing this — my eldest daughter Adele and her partner Craig have sadly passed away. The family are heartbroken at this time. You are my firstborn, the one who made me a mum. I'm in pieces, another part of my heart is in heaven.' One friend posted photos of her on country walks with Adele. She said: 'Thank you for always being an amazing friend, always honest and caring.' A neighbour in Longridge said: 'They were a good couple who liked camping. It's a tragedy.' Police Scotland shared the following statement in relation to Adele and Craig's death's: 'A man and woman were found deceased within a tent on the side of Loch Awe at 4.25pm on Saturday. Their deaths are not being treated as suspicious.' It comes just days after a body was found in a wooded area near Falkirk believed to be Cole Cooper, a 19 year old who vanished last month. A man's body was discovered in a wooded area near Kilsyth Road in Banknock at about 4.15pm on Friday, June 6, not far from where Cole was last spotted. Although formal identification is pending, Police Scotland has notified Cole's family of the find. The location of the find is a mere 15-minute walk from where Cole was last confirmed to be seen. Police Scotland is continuing its investigation to determine what happened.

An autopsy is expected to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death. He is not the only Brit to have died while on holiday in recent months. It comes after a Brit dad died while on holiday in Turkey after being escorted off a plane for being drunk. Builder Ben Crook from Caerphilly, South Wales had been in Antalya with his partner and two kids to celebrate his 32nd birthday. But he was escorted off their flight due to behaving erratically on the plane after drinking alcohol. He was separated from his family, who went to the hotel. But the dad died from a fall before he made it there to join them. Elsewhere, a two-year-old British boy drowned in a pool at a private villa in Ibiza. The tot was found in the swimming pool without a pulse, local news outlet Diario de Ibiza reported. Rhodes remains a popular tourist spot for Brit holidaymakers. The island was recently rocked by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Greece and Turkey. It was felt along the Turquoise Coast and in neighbouring regions, waking many from their sleep.
