BYD Seal 06: Mid-size PHEV sedan with 2100km range spied in Australia

The Advertiser7 days ago
A right-hand drive version of the BYD Seal 06 has been spied in Sydney, following comments from the Chinese brand the plug-in hybrid mid-size sedan could work in our market.
The camouflaged right-hand drive Seal 06 DM-i was spotted by a member of the BYD Seal Australia Facebook group, who got a clear view of the exterior and the cabin, including its rotating 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen.
The model hasn't been confirmed by BYD Australia, but is already produced in right-hand drive – like the vehicle spotted – and has been announced for the BYD lineup in the UK.
While the vehicle spied locally was wearing a camouflage wrap, the Seal 06 DM-i has been on sale in China since May 2024.

It was launched as a sedan only with the automaker's fifth-generation hybrid powertrain, but earlier this year gained a station wagon variant called the Travel Edition as well as a pure electric version.
The plug-in hybrid sedan and wagon are part of a growing range of Seal-badged products in BYD's lineup. These also include the smaller Seal 05 DM-i plug-in hybrid sedan and Seal 06 GT electric hatch, among others.
"The Seal 06, being a DM [PHEV] product, there's a very strong appetite for plug-in hybrids in Australia, so something like that in our lineup would be fantastic," BYD Australia product lead Sajid Hasan told CarExpert earlier this year.
It sits on a different platform compared to the Seal EV currently sold in Australia, with a 130mm shorter wheelbase but the same width and a 30mm longer body.
It's priced from ¥99,800 ($A21,324) to ¥139,800 ($A29,863) across five model grades in China, with the electric version priced from ¥109,900 ($23,476).
This compares to a starting price of $46,990 before on-road costs for the cheapest of three Seal EV model grades in Australia, the Dynamic.
The Seal 06 DM-i sedan offers a claimed 2100km of combined range. It features a 74kW/126Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 120kW/210Nm front-axle mounted electric motor.
Two 'Blade' battery packs are offered in China, with a 10.08kWh version offering 80km (CLTC) of electric-only driving and 2.9L/100km combined fuel economy.
A 15.87kWh version extends electric range to 120km, with 3.08L/100km combined economy and a 0.4 second improvement in the 0-100km/h sprint, down to 7.5 seconds.
Fuel consumption figures of 2.9L/100km, although on the more optimistic NEDC standard, give the entry-level Seal 06 DM-i a range of more than 2100km.
BYD Australia took over distribution of the brand here in July and told CarExpert it was looking at every vehicle from the automaker's portfolio of brands – which extends to Denza, Fangchengbao and Yangwang – for local showrooms.
In July, the BYD Sealion 7 outsold the Tesla Model Y to become Australia's best-selling EV for the month, with the brand also announcing a bigger battery to extend the range of its Sealion 6 PHEV SUV.

2026 KGM Musso price and specs: Reshuffled range for ex-SsangYong ute

The KGM Musso – formerly known as the SsangYong Musso – brings more standard equipment for model year 2026, but it comes at a premium. The base price of the dual-cab 4×4 ute range has climbed by $2500 to $42,500 drive-away, while flagship Ultimate variants are now $5500 pricier than before. However, the Ultimate now includes all of the features of the previous Luxury Pack as standard, so it's a $2500 increase as well if comparing like for like. The Ultimate also gains LED headlights. Stepping down a rung, the mid-range Adventure has been renamed Advance and gets a darker look, with a black grille, black 18-inch alloy wheels, and rear privacy glass. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Above: Musso Advance The Musso gains electrically assisted power steering, enabling lane-keep assist. However, this isn't available on XLV grades, which stick with a hydraulic power steering setup and therefore only have lane departure warning. No Australian-market Musso has adaptive cruise control, even though this has been offered in Korea for some time and has now been added to the related Rexton large SUV locally. The base ELX gains the HID headlights that were previously exclusive to the Ultimate, but again there's a difference with the extended XLV variant which sticks with projector halogen units. Safety equipment from the Ultimate has filtered down to the Advance. This includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and safe exit warning. The Advance also gains dual-zone climate control and a heated steering wheel. The following pricing is for private buyers. The Musso comes standard with a part-time four-wheel drive system with selectable 4H and 4L modes and an automatically locking rear differential. Supplied Credit: CarExpert All Mussos have multi-link coil-spring rear suspension, bar the ELX XLV which uses leaf springs. Payload varies. It's 790kg in regular-length Mussos, 1010kg in the ELX XLV, and 880kg in the Advance XLV. The KGM Musso is backed by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, and five years of roadside assistance. The billionaire who has changed Trump's mind

Days after calling for the firing of Intel 's CEO, President Donald Trump changed his mind following a 'very interesting' meeting with the executive. 'His success and rise is an amazing story,' Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. It's a story that's also made Lip-Bu Tan amazingly rich. The 65-year-old technology and venture capital industry veteran has amassed a fortune worth at least $US1.1 billion ($1.7 billion), according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which is calculating Tan's net worth for the first time. The bulk of his fortune stems from Cadence Design Systems, a maker of chip design tools where Tan was chief executive officer for 12 years before joining Intel. He has sold shares worth more than $US575 million in the San Jose, California-based company, and still holds a $US500 million position, according to Bloomberg's calculations. A Bloomberg report late Thursday afternoon saying the Trump administration is in talks with Intel to have the US government potentially take a stake in the Silicon Valley chipmaker sent the company's shares up 7.4 per cent in New York. The stock gained 15 per cent since Tan's appointment as CEO in March, boosting the value of his stake to more than $US29 million. Loading It was Tan's tenure at Cadence, along with his other role as executive chairman of venture firm Walden International, that initially drew criticism from Washington. Trump ally and Republican Senator Tom Cotton sent a letter to Intel's board chair earlier this month questioning Tan's ties to China and his history at Cadence, which sold products to a Chinese military university. A day later, the president posted that Tan was 'highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately.' Tan called the claims 'misinformation' in a letter to employees. But his record of investing in China and the riches it has brought him had already cast a shadow over his work. In July, Cadence pleaded guilty to violating US export controls during Tan's tenure and took a $US140.6 million charge related to settling the cases. Earlier, in 2023, the US government had sent Tan a letter asking Walden to explain its investments after the San Francisco-based firm had invested in more than 100 Chinese companies.
