Good Tuesday afternoon, and a brief word of thanks for the miracle of air conditioning.
Senate Republicans are scrambling to finalize their version of the GOP megabill, pass it this weekend and then get out of town. They're not much concerned at the moment with what happens after that.
The House, they're convinced, will swallow the bill rather than defy President Donald Trump, who made clear today 'NO ONE GOES ON VACATION UNTIL IT'S DONE.'
But House GOP hard-liners are starting to speak up. At least three — Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris, chief rebel Chip Roy and Rep. Eric Burlison — said today they will tank the bill if House leaders try to jam them with anything that resembles the current Senate bill.
'We may not leave town for a while then,' Roy told us after Trump's threat this morning. 'I can vote no as many times as it takes and for as long as it takes, to do something actually big and beautiful.'
Roy added the Senate bill (which, to be clear, remains in flux) is 'not even close' to the House budget plan Speaker Mike Johnson promised House GOP fiscal hawks he would abide by earlier this year.
Harris took a similar line: 'If the Senate tries to jam the House with this version, I won't vote 'present.' I'll vote NO,' he posted.
Burlison told our colleague Chris Marquette he is a 'no' on the Senate bill as it stands, even if it means Trump threatening a primary challenge like he's done to GOP Rep. Thomas Massie.
'At the end of the day, like, I love the president. He and I are in total alignment on the goals,' he said. 'I can't be a part of growing the deficits, so that's where I'm at.'
As we all know, the hard right has a recent record of making lots of noise before ultimately finding their way to yes. But with Roy & Co. having drawn and re-drawn their fiscal red lines several times over now, there's reason to think it will be a lot harder this time for them to back down.
WHAT'S STILL COMING TODAY: Republican and Democratic senators are in their 12:45 p.m. weekly conference lunches, so expect more news out of that soon — including possible timing for Iran war powers and megabill motion-to-proceed votes. (It's trending Thursday and Friday, respectively, people in the know tell our Jordain Carney.)
The House is about to vote on a motion to table Rep. Al Green's Trump impeachment resolution, followed by a rule for the fiscal 2026 Military Construction-VA spending bill and legislation condemning riots in Los Angeles. (Expect Green's impeachment push to die with help from Democratic leaders, as Nicholas Wu reports.)
ICYMI:
Iran briefings postponed — A pair of planned congressional briefings on the volatile situation in the Middle East have been postponed, according to four people granted anonymity to describe the private plans. They're now expected later in the week.
Garcia to lead Oversight Dems — Rep. Robert Garcia will be the next top Democrat on House Oversight after beating Rep. Stephen Lynch in a 150-63 caucus vote this morning. 'We'll get immediately to work,' Garcia told reporters afterward — and then headed straight to a panel deposition.
Trade deals on hold for the megabill — The White House is waiting to announce a number of trade deals until after the Republican-controlled Congress completes action on the megabill, a top White House official said today. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told Fox Business Network that there was no problem in the ongoing negotiations with more than a dozen trading partners ahead of a July 8 deadline for big reciprocal tariffs (which could very well be extended).

As Hortmans lie in state, thousands of Minnesotans line up to pay respects

A woman prays before the caskets as Melissa and Mark Hortman lie in state, along with their dog Gilbert Friday, June 27, 2025 at the Minnesota State Capitol. (Photo by Nicole Neri/Minnesota Reformer) Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman on Friday was surrounded by things she loved: She laid in the Minnesota Capitol where she dedicated 20 years of her life, next to her husband Mark, her golden retriever Gilbert, leafy trees, bright flowers and legions of Minnesotans whom she sought to help through public service. Minnesotans lined up to pay their final respects to Hortman, who was killed on June 14 in a politically motivated assassination. Mark Hortman was also killed, and Gilbert was injured and had to be euthanized. Melissa Hortman is the first woman in Minnesota history to lie in state at the Capitol, and the 20th Minnesotan to be awarded the honor. In the Capitol Rotunda, members of the Minnesota National Guard's honor guard flanked the Hortmans' wooden caskets. Photos of the couple and their dog were on display among the flowers and greenery. Gov. Tim Walz and First Lady Gwen Walz were the first to pay their respects when the memorial opened to the public at noon. They were followed by Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth, her husband and Senate Majority leader Erin Murphy. Thousands of Minnesotans followed, many of them part of the Hortmans' vast network of friends, family and colleagues. Jennifer O'Rourke, director of government relations for Ramsey County, said her friendship with Melissa Hortman predates Hortman's first election to the House in 2004. 'She deserves this,' O'Rourke said, gesturing to the line of Minnesotans wrapped around the block. Many brought flowers or letters to add to the memorial outside the House chambers, where extra tables were brought in to accommodate Friday's contributions from the public. Others mourners had no connection to the Hortmans, but came in solidarity at a perilous moment in the history of the republic and its 32nd state. Carla Peck, 69, took work off to attend the memorial alongside her 2-year-old golden retriever Ollie. Peck didn't know much about the Hortmans until they were killed, but she thought it important to attend. 'I wanted to show respect and appreciation for what the Hortmans did for the state of Minnesota. I thought it's important to bring my golden because goldens are great to share the love. Dogs are very healing,' Peck said. Dave Woosley, 65, drove over an hour from Hastings to the Capitol to pay his respects. He didn't know Melissa Hortman, but he had heard of the extensive amount of work she was able to get done in the Legislature. 'I thought it was important for our fellow citizens to see that we can all come together, whether we agree with her or disagree with her. Just have respect for not only Melissa, but this institution,' Woosley said. Jeff Kolstad, 79, met Hortman in passing while doorknocking and respected her work on the environment. Flowers in hand, he stood in line with his dog Gracie, who 'wanted to pay a tribute to Gilbert.' A private funeral for the Hortmans will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. It will be livestreamed.

Crypto Daybook Americas: Bitcoin Retreats From $108K, But Bulls Aren't Done

By Omkar Godbole (All times ET unless indicated otherwise) Slowly, then suddenly. That sums up the adoption of bitcoin (BTC) and the wider cryptocurrency market by institutions. It started with Strategy, then called MicroStrategy, adopting BTC as a balance sheet asset in 2020. Now the head of the U.S. government agency overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac wants the mortgage giants to consider homebuyers' cryptocurrency holdings in their criteria for buying mortgages from banks. "After significant studying, and in keeping with President Trump's vision to make the United States the crypto capital of the world, today I ordered the Great Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to prepare their businesses to count cryptocurrency as an asset for a mortgage. SO ORDERED," Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said on X. Getting entrenched in the housing market of the world's largest economy can only add to the ongoing bull momentum in BTC and other cryptocurrencies. And, in a move that could markedly improve big banks' ability to create credit, the Federal Reserve advanced a long-awaited plan to overhaul bank capital requirements. That's a positive development for risk assets. It's no surprise that BTC, which is most sensitive to fiat liquidity conditions, has extended gains in the past 24 hours, topping $108,000 at one point. The broader market capitalization is fast approaching a volatility threshold, according to FxPro's analyst Alex Kuptsikevich. "The crypto market cap increased by another 1% to $3.31 trillion, reaching the threshold of increased volatility. Just above that, in the $3.40–3.55 trillion range, is a turning point, which has activated sellers and prevented the market from consolidating higher," Kuptsikevich said in an email, noting a rise in the Fear and Greed Index to 74, just one point below the extreme greed zone. In other news, spot BTC ETFs recorded a net inflow of $548 million, marking 12 consecutive days of positive flows. Metaplanet purchased another 1,234 BTC, a day after announcing a $515 million raise to fund the treasury strategy. Meanwhile, Nasdaq-listed Bit Digital announced a strategic shift to become a pure-play ether (ETH) staking and treasury company. The Hong Kong Government issued a policy statement on the development of digital assets, focusing on streamlining regulatory aspects, expanding the suite of tokenized products, advancing use cases and cross-sectoral collaboration. In traditional markets, futures tied to the Nasdaq index rose to record highs, pointing to continued risk-on sentiment while the dollar index continued to lose ground. Stay alert! Analysts warn that funding in excess of 0.05% or open interest outpacing spot would signal leverage creep and possible overextension. For now, momentum is clean, macro is supportive, and July could bring more upside if risk appetite holds. BTC's slight pullback from Wednesday's high of over $108,250 is accompanied by an uptick in perpetual futures open interest on major exchanges. It's possible some market participants are taking hedges against a price drop. BCH, PEPE and XMR have seen the most increase in open interest in the past 24 hours. On the CME, BTC futures open interest jumped to a four-week high of 159.85K BTC. Still, the basis remains flat below 10%, weakening the bullish positioning narrative. Trump cancels trip to push ‘big, beautiful bill' across finish line

(NewsNation) — President Trump is making one final push to get the 'big, beautiful bill' he's championed across the finish line. NewsNation confirmed that Trump has called off a weekend trip to his Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey to focus on the bill and lobby Republicans who remain on the fence with what the spending package currently includes. The White House on Thursday dug in on its expectation that Congress will pass the massive reconciliation package containing Trump's key agenda items by next week, despite a vital setback from the Senate parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough. 'We expect that bill to be on the president's desk for signature by July 4,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters. Trump says Iran must open itself to inspection to verify it doesn't restart its nuclear program Trump's optimism about the bill's deadline to pass has wavered a bit than in the past. The legislation calls for tax cuts for families, no tax on tips or overtime, a child tax credit increase, extension of the 2017 tax cuts, and clean energy tax cuts. Trump claims that if it doesn't pass, the country would see a 68% tax increase. 'It's a great bill,' he said. It's a massive tax cut. It will be interesting to see if we get any Democratic votes. If I were a Democrat, I would vote for this bill all day long because it's tax cuts and many other things that are common sense.' The Latest: Trump emboldened to accelerate his agenda after nationwide injunction ruling Trump also held a White House event on Thursday to pressure Republican holdouts to support his so-called 'big, beautiful bill' ahead of the deadline. The gathering featured 'everyday Americans' who the administration claims will benefit from 'many different provisions in the bill.' Truck drivers, firefighters, law enforcement, health care workers, tipped workers, and others were in attendance. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
