Viral battle of 100 men vs one gorilla goes viral - here's what you need to know

Daily Mirror02-05-2025

One of the Internet's greatest unanswered questions has re-emerged. Now social media is aflame, as animal lovers, computer developers and influencers argue who would win in this viral battle
Have you ever wondered who would win in a fight: 100 men or one gorilla? No? Well, you're about to enter down the Internet's most viral rabbit hole.
The question appears to have been first broached on Reddit five years ago as a thought experiment conducted on r/whowillwin. The parameters are simple: 100 men, of average size and ability, versus one gorilla, hand-to-hand, no weapons. The question is: who wins and who dies?

Now, the hypothesis has begun to resurface – but the stakes are higher than ever. Across platforms, users are weighing in, from influencers like Mr Beast to James Charles.

One tweet that really kicked things off said that 100 men could easily beat up one gorilla, they "just gotta be dedicated to the s--t.' It was viewed over 250 million times and the replies were a mix between agreement, bafflement and complete backlash.
'You're tripping bro,' one reply said. Others conceded that it would be possible, but not without heavy losses. 'Bro, [for real], if 100 dudes really locked in, like truly committed — no fear, no second thoughts — they could maybe take the gorilla... after 87 of them get turned into smoothies first. It's not about strength. It's about sacrifice & vibes at that point.'
Of course, gorillas are notoriously strong. The average gorilla is about 1.7 metres tall and can weigh up 220 kg. In fact, according to experts from Wild Gorillas Safaris, one gorilla punch can completely shatter a human skull.
However, these facts have done little to stop the debate. Across multiple platforms, social media users and influencers have been weighing in with their opinions – and stating their allegiances. James Charles recently posted a TikTok in which he stated: 'I'm on Team Gorilla, personally.'

It's also exposed some delusional attitudes towards human ability. One viral tweet reads: 'My husband says 100 men could easily defeat a gorilla by all piling on top of it and 'smothering it' and when I pointed out this would probably lead to a number of human casualties under the crush pile he just said 'bees do it'.'
One commenter responded: 'theoretically if you could get 100 guys on top of it at once then yeah that would work but logistically I don't see it. Maybe if they're all totally blood-lusted and willing to die.' Another reply raised an equally important point: 'You're not killing a mature, angry silverback gorilla without some casualties.'
The species of gorilla in question has also become a pertinent part of the debate. As many have pointed out, silverback gorillas are some of the world 's strongest animals, possessing about the same muscle power as 20 humans combined. One of these giant monkeys can lift over 800 kilograms, which is the same weight as a fully grown horse.

But some have attempted to argue that strength is irrelevant without technique. TikTok user @shayan opened his video: 'Gorillas are what we like to call 'fake demons'.' Pointing to a green screen pic of a gorilla, he stated: 'This is a herbivore, not a hunter, not a predator. This is someone's prey. And last time I checked, I would be damned if 100 men would lose to a f--king vegetarian.'
He continued: 'Gorillas cannot fight. They're not quick, they're not agile, they have no footwork, and they have no punching technique whatsoever.'
Unsurprisingly, comments were quick to disagree. 'Humans have no way to critically injure a gorilla, the only reason humans have been running the earth is because of tools, without them we would've been packed up,' one wrote.
People have even been using computer systems to simulate the scenario. One model, posted by Clip&Tell, shows a gorilla easily punch and barrel his way through a horde of average-sized human men. However, this also provoked backlash, with comments claiming the creator 'nerfed' the humans and gave the gorilla too much stamina.
Women in heterosexual relationships have also been using the debate to figure out how delusional their partners are. Under the hashtag 'team gorilla', one woman captioned a clip of her appearing concerned: 'POV you realise you're married to a '100 guys CAN beat a gorilla' man instead of a 'anyone who thinks that is an idiot' man.'

Man stunned by 'rare' £2 charity shop find and it's worth a small fortune

Kev was amazed when he stumbled upon a "rare" find and he can't believe the hefty sum it sold for online Charity shops can often be gold mines for those with a keen eye for hidden gems, as one ardent deal-seeker recently found out. Rooting around the board game shelf at his local charity shop, one man struck upon something rather unexpected. Kev, as he simply goes by online, couldn't wait to share his thrift store haul on TikTok, buzzing about snatching up a bargain for a mere £2. He declared: "You're never quite sure what you are going to find when you walk into a charity shop. But this one definitely surprised me." ‌ Monopoly sets are a familiar sight in second-hand shops, but Kev highlighted that it's the lesser-known editions that merit attention. With its release stretching back to 1935, Monopoly has spawned well over a thousand special editions, creating an enticing challenge for collectors scouring for something distinctive. ‌ As he delved deeper, Kev admitted: "I've never seen this Littlest Pet Shop version before." Hasbro, which also oversees Monopoly, owns the Littlest Pet Shop, known not just for its toys but as an animated series too, reports the Manchester Evening News. The reason Kev was taken aback by his discovery was simple: "There's good reason why - it's a pretty rare game." He mentioned the critical step of verifying whether all necessary components are in place. Luckily for Kev, his due diligence paid off splendidly. Victorious, Kev confirmed: "There they are - the four playable pieces that this game comes with - as well as what looks to be the complete set." When Kev presented his unpriced treasure at the counter, he casually asked how much it might cost. The response from the staff member was music to his ears: "Games are usually £2," she stated. "I'll take that then," Kev exclaimed joyfully, before announcing: "There we go - board game secured for £2 - absolute bargain." ‌ Upon getting back, Kev checked the contents of the game and was pleased to find it was "fully complete" and in "really, really good condition". Kev noted: "The playable characters, the cards, the money - it even had the discard cards in there - this has not been played with at all." Everyone was eager to know the actual value of the game. Kev showed an eBay screenshot indicating a similar Monopoly set had recently sold for a sizable £115.12. ‌ "It's exactly the same," he underscored, then revealed further prices. He disclosed another version sold earlier fetched £73.08 and one piece from the game astonishingly went for £52. "Pretty crazy," admitted Kev, mentioning there were no exact matches of his version currently up for auction. With optimism, he said: "Fingers crossed I should be getting that £115 or maybe a bit more." ‌ Another individual stated: "That is absolutely crazy... great find." While a third praised his eagle eye: "Wow! I would have completely bypassed this, thanks for the tip Kev! Cracking find." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Mystery as huge billboard goes up outside Glastonbury Festival – and fans think it's a hint at secret set

GLASTONBURY kicks off today with several mystery slots still unannounced - and fans are on high alert for clues about surprise performers. Now, a mysterious billboard has popped up near Castle Cary, the main train station for Glastonbury Festival. 5 A huge billboard near the gates of Glastonbury has sparked rumours a huge star could be performing a secret set Credit: Reddit 5 Glastonbury kicked off today Credit: PA 5 Lewis Capaldi performing on the Pyramid Stage in 2023 Credit: Getty The large white banner features a cryptic message in red text which says: 'I've had my share of Monday mornings when I can't get up.' It also included a mobile phone number. When one Reddit user contacted the number, they said they got a response to sign up to a "scam" investment scheme. The billboard was spotted by a festival-goer queuing early for the gates, who shared a photo to Reddit with the caption: 'Does anyone know what this is about / who's it for? 'Just got here to queue for gates opening and haven't seen anyone mention it. Give me ya theories!!!!' One fan was quick to point out that the same sign appeared in Glasgow recently, fuelling rumours that Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi - who made a surprise return to the stage in May after a hiatus - may be planning a surprise return on one of Glastonbury's stages. The Someone You Loved star, who has been diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome, was forced to take a break from music after struggling to finish his set at Glastonbury in June 2023. The legendary festival officially opens today at Worthy Farm in Somerset, with headline performances scheduled from June 27 to June 29. This year's headliners include The 1975, Neil Young, and Olivia Rodrigo. Elsewhere on the bill are major acts like Charli XCX, Loyle Carner, Rod Stewart, The Prodigy, Doechii, and Raye. Earlier this month, the full festival schedule was released — but fans noticed several TBA slots still in place. Foo Fighters make surprise Glastonbury performance as The Churn Ups Now they have a new theory about who else could make a surprise appearance at the legendary festival. On the 2025 Glastonbury schedule, the Saturday 6.15pm slot has a mysterious act called "Patchwork" pencilled in, and fans have been trying to work out what it means. It follows a similar mystery in 2023 when Churn Ups were revealed to be the Foo Fighters. Fans are convinced that Chappell Roan is "Patchwork" after she posted a telling clue on Instagram. Dave Grohl also sparked a flurry of excitement after he jetted to the UK earlier this week. Grohl, 56, sent fans into a spin after posing for a photo with US singer Amanda Palmer at London's Royal Albert Hall. After grabbing the Foo Fighters legend for a photo, she shared it on social media and told her followers: "Well I'll be damned. Not who I expected to run into backstage at the Yeah Yeah Yeah's show in London tonight, but look, it's Dave Grohl." The rest of the bill features big-name acts such as Charli XCX, Doechii, Rod Stewart, Loyle Carner, The Prodigy and Raye. 5 Fans are convinced that Chappell Roan is the mysterious act after she posted this picture Credit: Instagram

Squid Game boss admits copycat shows like MrBeast's can ‘leave a bitter taste'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The creator of Squid Game has given his verdict on reality TV shows inspired by the series, including the one devised by MrBeast, admitting that they 'sometimes leave a bitter taste'. This Friday, the third and final season of the dystopian survival thriller launches on Netflix, finally revealing whether Seong Gi-hun, aka Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), will be successful in his attempt to take revenge against the sadistic Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). Ever since its premiere in 2021, the South Korean show has been highly praised for its exploration of heavy themes, including the dark side of capitalism and social inequality. Despite many viewing Squid Game as a warning against the perils of greed, it has still spawned reality TV shows, including Netflix's Squid Game: The Challenge, MrBeast's video $456,000 Squid Game in Real Life! and his Amazon Prime Video gameshow Beast Games. Metro recently spoke to Squid Game mastermind Hwang Dong-hyuk while he was in London for the premiere of season three, during which we asked what he thought of competitions like the one created by MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), the internet star who boasts 408 million subscribers on YouTube. His Squid Game video currently has 813 million views on the video-sharing platform. Even though it proved extremely popular, some criticised the concept for appearing to brush aside the deeper meaning of what the original series of Squid Game is actually about. Do you think Squid Game-inspired reality shows take away from the meaning of the original series? He later followed it up with his Amazon Prime Video series Beast Games, which saw contestants compete for a prize of $5m (£3.6m). Last year, a lawsuit claimed that Beast Games contestants were 'shamelessly exploited' while making the programme. 'To be honest, I haven't watched those kinds of shows, so I have no idea what is going on the show,' Hwang responded when asked what he thinks of the reality competitions inspired by Squid Game. The director continued: 'But if you look at shows like that, they have rid of the social criticism or the satire or allegory that is in the original series. Obviously no one dies. No one has to go through a critical loss as a result of losing in the game. It's made just for entertainment and for fun.' Hwang, 54, acknowledged that he's 'heard some criticism' of the copycat shows, from people who claim that they're 'diluting the original Squid Game spirit or the message, only making a spectacle of the show'. 'But I think that in a way, that's just how capitalism works. All things are created. They're produced and they're sold. And when something is a hit product, you get products that are derived from that, and then that is sold for even greater profit. That is just the basic system and really the rules of capitalism,' he stated. 'So while I will admit that sometimes it does leave a bitter taste, I don't think that we should be completely and wholly against it, because that's just the world that we live in.' In September last year, the BBC reported that in a case filed at a Los Angeles court, five anonymous contestants who took part in Beast Games alleged that participants were 'underfed and overtired', and meals were provided 'sporadically and sparsely'. There were also allegations of sexual harassment. A couple of months later, when a trailer was released for Beast Games ahead of its December release, an X user tweeted: 'Is this the same one where a lot of contestants complained of terrible conditions?' More Trending MrBeast responded at the time: 'We have tons of behind the scenes dropping when the show does to show how blown out of proportion these claims were. Just can't release it now because it would spoil the games.' In February this year, he told Good Morning America: 'I've got to let the lawyers handle that, I can't comment on it. But I can say I have personally talked to seven, 800 contestants. They all want to come back, they all had a great time, and you can watch their content online. And I think it speaks for itself.' Amazon declined to comment when contacted by Good Morning America at the time. A spokesperson for MrBeast also told the news programme: 'The lawsuit, which was filed last September hasn't achieved class-action status, still hasn't been served.' In May this year, Beast Games was renewed for two more seasons after becoming one of Amazon Prime Video's most viewed shows. View More » Squid Game season 3 premieres on Friday June 27 on Netflix.
