S-400 vs Iron Dome: How India's air defense system stacks up against Israel's famed missile shield?
How does India's air defense systems, including the S-400 Triumf, stack up against Israel's famed Iron Dome missile defense shield? Let us find out.

India-Pakistan tensions: Amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions post Operation Sindoor, India's air defense systems, including the Russian-made S-400 Triumf and the Israeli Barak-8, have successfully thwarted missile and drone attacks by Pakistan on multiple Indian cities.
But how does India's air defense systems stack up against Israel's famed Iron Dome missile defense shield? Let us find out.
S-400 Triumf
The S-400 'Triumf' is a vital part of India's air defence system. The surface-to-air missile system currently has three operational squadrons in India, and is capable of intercepting incoming projectiles at a range 400 kilometers and an altitude of 30 kilometers. The S-400 system is designed to intercept a wide range of aerial threats, including ballistic and cruise missiles, and is integrated with the IACCS network of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The Russian-built system is can intercept virtually an aerial attack from the enemy, including missiles, drones fighter jets and rocket attacks. The system is highly mobile and can be easily transported and deployed at any location, where it can be ready for operational use within minutes.
The S-400 system is equipped with an advanced 92N6E electronically-steered phased array radar, which enables the system to detect multiple enemy targets from a distance of 600 km. The system is capable of tracking as many as 160 targets simultaneously, and can fire two intercepting missiles at each target to ensure its neutralized.
India acquired the S-400 system from Russia in 2018 under a deal worth Rs 40,000 crore for five units, three of which have been delivered so far and are in operational use.
Akash Missile System
The indigenously-built Akash Missile System perfectly complements the S-400 air defense system. The Akash system is designed for short-range aerial defence, with a capability to take down aerial threats up to a range of 25-30 kms. The low-level interception system is a low-cost option to engage multiple short-range targets, and is equipped with anti-jamming technology, making it difficult for the enemy to disable using electronic warfare capabilities.
Barak-8 missile system
Jointly developed by India and Israel, the Barak-8 is a medium-range air defense system that can target fighter jets, helicopters, drones, anti-ship and cruise missiles at a distance ranging between 70-150 km. The Barak-8 missile system is equipped with ctive radar homing, advanced data link, allowing blazing fast response to threats.
How Israel's Iron Dome varies from India's air defense systems
Notably. India's air defense strategy markedly different from Israel. The Jewish nation's famed Iron Dome missile defense is specifically designed to intercept short-range aerial threats, especially rocket attacks by Hamas from the Gaza Strip, while India's multi-level air defense is designed to provide protection against long-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, stealth aircraft and hypersonic projectile.

As Lavrov plans India visit, Putin aide ruffles feathers by repeating Trump claim on mediation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to visit Delhi this month, even as a controversy brewed over Russia repeating U.S. President Donald Trump's claim, that India has denied, that Washington mediated the India-Pakistan ceasefire last month. This is the first visit to India by a Foreign Minister from one of the UN Security Council's permanent member nations since Operation Sindoor. Diplomatic sources suggested that Mr. Lavrov could travel as early as next week, to discuss strategic and economic ties with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Significantly, Mr. Lavrov will be arriving in India after a meeting with Pakistan's Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi in Moscow on Tuesday, and before a possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in July if both leaders travel to the upcoming BRICS summit in Brazil. Also Read | India to get remaining S-400 missile systems by 2026, says Russia India denies mediation claim On Thursday, however, a comment by Mr. Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov raised eyebrows. While speaking about Mr. Trump's conversation with Mr. Putin on Ukraine, he mentioned that other issues were also discussed, including the Middle East, 'as well as the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which has been halted with the personal involvement of President Trump.' When asked, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that it had 'clarified [India's] position fair and square' about the four-day conflict after India launched strikes on Pakistan's terror infrastructure in Operation Sindoor on May 7. 'The cessation of hostilities (May 10) happened bilaterally and was done by the two DGMOs [Directors General of Military Operations],' the MEA spokesperson said on Thursday. Despite the consistent denials, Mr. Trump and U.S. government officials have said more than a dozen times, including in a sworn submission in a U.S. court, that the U.S. had 'mediated' between the two sides, using trade as 'leverage' to ensure an end to hostilities. It is unclear whether Mr. Ushakov simply repeated Mr. Trump's claims during the conversation with Mr. Putin ad verbatim, or whether Russia had any other source of information on the subject, but officials are expected to clarify India's position again during Mr. Lavrov's visit. The EAEU, which includes Russia and the former Soviet states of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, is a common market and customs union that has been in talks with India since 2015. In January 2025, the government said that 'India is finalising the terms of reference' for the FTA. Talks have been bolstered by the seven-fold rise in India-Russia bilateral trade from 2021 to nearly US $70 billion in 2024, primarily due to Indian purchases of Russian oil, despite western sanctions. Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin told journalists that the EAEU-India FTA is the 'need of the hour', a 'turning point', and a 'game changer' in economic ties. 'The acceleration of the FTA talks was one of the most important topics on the agenda when PM Modi and President Putin met in Moscow in 2024,' Mr. Babushkin said, adding that India and Russia had since made progress on issues like payment mechanisms, insurance, and banking facilities.

Bengaluru stampede: Dy. CM breaks down over deaths, HDK demands his ouster from Cabinet

A day after the death of 11 persons in the stampede during RCB's victory celebrations in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday broke down before the media, while speaking over the episode. The Opposition mocked him for shedding tears after allowing the tragedy to strike. Union Minister and JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy demanded his ouster from the State Cabinet, accusing him of being responsible for the episode. 'The Opposition is politicking. But I am grief-stricken over the death of children,' the Deputy Chief Minister said, weeping, while interacting with media persons in Bengaluru. 'Those children had a bright future ahead of them. This incident has tarnished the reputation of Bengaluru and Karnataka. We have taken this incident seriously, and we will rectify the shortcomings. This is a lesson for us.' He said the City Police Commissioner had told them that the programme in the stadium should be confined to just 10 minutes. 'I had no plans to go to the stadium earlier. However, upon being told by the police commissioner, I rushed to the venue. Even the KSCA president and secretary could not go to the stadium, and I had to take them in my car. We spoke to the RCB management to keep the programme short.' He said this was a time for mourning and not for scoring some political brownie points. Counter attack Launching a counterattack on the Opposition, Mr. Shivakumar declared that he would talk about similar tragedies that have taken place during their regime in the forthcoming legislative session. 'I can list out all the tragedies that took place during the BJP and JD(S) regime. But I don't want to stoop to their level. I will talk about such incidents during the BJP and JD(S) regimes in the legislative session. I am not going to talk about what happened during the death of Kannada actor Rajkumar (during JD (S)-BJP regime).' Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy blamed Mr. Shivakumar for the tragedy and said the Chief Minister should sack him if he had any courage. 'The DCM's hunger for publicity even amidst the tragic deaths and his rude behaviour at the programme was the height of insensitivity.' He further described the entire programme in front of Vidhana Soudha as a 'show of daadaagiri (bullying) by Mr. Shivakumar.' Even after coming to know about deaths, he participated in the victory programme, claimed Mr. Kumaraswamy.

‘Bengaluru lost its image, BJP playing politics on dead bodies': DK Shivakumar on stampede

Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday said that Bengaluru has "lost its image" after the death of 11 people in a stampede. On Wednesday, celebrations for the IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore turned deadly after a large gathering of fans outside the Chinnaswamy stadium turned into a stampede. According to the Karnataka government, a total of 11 people were killed and at least 33 sustained injuries. Following the incident, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party blamed the state government for its "negligence and mismanagement" of the event. The BJP and JD(S) have alleged that the Siddaramaiah government carried out the felicitation ceremony without prior permission from the police. In response to these allegations, the Karnataka deputy CM accused the opposition parties of playing 'politics.' "I don't want to react to any of these BJP guys. I am only answerable to the people of Karnataka and the people of the country. All BJP persons are nonsense... They are also the masterminds of these dirty things," the Congress leader told PTI. The deputy chief minister also accused the BJP and JD(S) of playing politics on the "dead bodies of victims." After 18 years (of waiting for RCB's victory), I don't know what was boiling in the youngsters, and they all came. That is have happened," he said. "Now let us be part of the grief. We want to respect the deceased. My CM is also shocked, my home minister is also shocked, and the entire state is shocked. The state is mourning over this," Shivakumar added. (With inputs from PTI)
