Meeting highlights AI's role in shaping future-ready educators
The Emirates College for Advanced Education (ECAE), in collaboration with the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore, and with the support of the UAE Embassy, held a high-level symposium in Singapore titled Reimagining the Future of Teaching & Learning in the Age of AI: Values-Driven Human Flourishing, highlighting the growing cooperation between the UAE and Singapore in future-focused education.
The event brought together senior policymakers, academics, and researchers to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in education.
The symposium explored key questions shaping the future of learning, including the evolving role of educators in the AI era and the design of education systems that prioritise student growth, equity, ethics, and professional excellence.
In his welcome address, Jamal Abdullah Al Suwaidi, UAE's Ambassador to Singapore, highlighted the longstanding relations between the two countries and their cooperation and strategic partnerships across multiple sectors, including education.
Reflecting on the UAE's forward-looking approach, he noted: 'Just a few weeks ago, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, announced that starting next academic year, AI will be a subject in all stages of government schools in our country. This vision underlines our leadership's commitment to future-readiness and the development of human capital.'
He pointed out that the UAE's aim is not merely to adopt new tools, but to fundamentally rethink education itself.
He said: 'AI presents us with powerful opportunities to personalise learning, assist teachers and expand access. At the same time, it brings complex questions around ethics, data privacy, and digital wellbeing. These are not challenges one nation can solve alone – they require global collaboration. And that is where the UAE-Singapore partnership shines.'
Dr May Laith Al Taee, Vice Chancellor of ECAE, highlighted in her opening remarks the significance of the symposium in advancing ECAE's mission to serve as a bridge between educational policy, research, and innovation.
She said: 'This gathering reflects a shared commitment to shaping education systems that are technologically advanced and deeply human. At ECAE, we believe that global collaboration is essential to creating meaningful, scalable change, and our partnership with NIE is a powerful example of what can be achieved when values and vision align.'
A panel discussion brought together leading educators and academics, including Prof. Low Ee Ling, Dean, Academic & Faculty Affairs and President's Chair in Education at NIE; Associate Professor Dr. Seng Chee Tan, Associate Dean, Professional & Leadership Development at NIE; Prof. David Pedder, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic at ECAE; and Prof. Shaljan Areepattamannil, Director, Office of Research at ECAE.
Prof. Low said: 'As AI transforms education, teacher education remains grounded in what truly matters. We stay values-anchored, student-centered, evidence-informed, and future-focused — principles that guide teachers to lead with heart, purpose, and professionalism.
'While AI can enhance how we teach, it cannot replace the human connection at the core of great teaching. These enduring anchors ensure that, beyond AI, teacher education continues to shape educators who are grounded, well prepared, and ready to thrive in an uncertain future.'
Dr Seng explored how AI is reshaping the very foundations of pedagogy and advocated for learning designs that preserve human insight and creativity.
He pointed out how the rise of generative AI is challenging us to rethink the way we teach and learn.
He said: 'Using the framework of learning from, with, about, and beyond AI, it emphasises that while AI can reshape education, enduring pedagogical principles must guide our journey, and holistic design considerations should be applied.
'Especially in learning with AI, we must develop approaches that are timeless, rooted in human agency, insight, meaningful interaction, and knowledge creation capacity.'

Reportage Group partners with Forbes Middle East at the Building the Future summit
Reportage Group partnered with Forbes Middle East for the Building the Future summit, held in Abu Dhabi. This gathering brought together the region's top government figures, industry leaders, and changemakers to explore how innovation, sustainability, and purpose-driven strategies are shaping the cities and economies of tomorrow. Among the speakers were Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, the Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, Eng. Maysarah Mahmoud Eid, the Director General of ADPIC, and top executives from some of the region's most influential entities. The event served as a high-level platform for discussing the future of development, infrastructure, technology, and investment in the Middle East. A major highlight of the summit was a fireside chat with Andrea Nucera, CEO and Managing Director of Reportage Group, who shared bold insights on reshaping real estate through purposeful development. Nucera highlighted several key milestones in Reportage's journey, including surpassing $1.5 billion in sales by 2025, a testament to the Group's strategic growth and expanding footprint. But the conversation quickly moved beyond figures. He emphasized that sustainability is not just about the environment, it's also about social sustainability. For Reportage Group, that means designing communities that are not only eco-conscious but also inclusive, accessible, and attuned to the needs of modern life. When asked, 'In markets that are rapidly evolving, how does Reportage provide accessibility, particularly in terms of pricing and location, for the new generation of buyers?'Nucera underscored the brand's mission to make homeownership attainable for everyone, not just the privileged few. Through flexible payment plans, and a strong presence in prime locations, Reportage is redefining the real estate landscape. It has become the only developer in the UAE challenging traditional norms by offering investment opportunities to all segments of society, especially younger buyers entering the market for the first time.

UAE condemns aid convoy attack that killed five in Sudan
The UAE on Wednesday condemned an attack on a convoy in Sudan that killed five aid workers, in what it called a "flagrant violation" of the laws of war. The convoy of 15 lorries carrying food to the famine-stricken city of El Fasher came under attack in North Darfur late on Monday. Five were killed and several others injured, said the World Food Programme and Unicef, the two UN agencies involved. It was unclear who was responsible. El Fasher has been under siege by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since May last year, and famine conditions have been reported in the city and in nearby displacement camps during Sudan's civil war. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on both sides in Sudan's war - the army and the RSF - to "respect their obligations" and uphold pledges to protect civilians. The attack was a "flagrant violation of international humanitarian law", and aid personnel "must be respected and protected", the ministry said. It called for "immediate steps to protect civilians and facilitate the rapid and unhindered access of essential humanitarian aid through all available means." The convoy had travelled more than 1,800km from the army's wartime capital of Port Sudan, said the agencies involved, in what would have been the UN's first such entry into the city for more than a year. They were "negotiating access" to El Fasher when the attack came.

UAE Justice Minister has phone call with Irish counterpart over extradition of suspected Kinahan gang member
The UAE's Minister of Justice has praised the co-operation with Ireland that led to the extradition of a suspected member of an organised crime gang from Dubai to Dublin. Sean McGovern, who is believed to be a member of the Kinahan organised crime group, landed in Dublin on Thursday evening, having flown on an Irish military aircraft. He was brought to a court in the Irish capital where he was charged with murder. He also was charged with several other offences including directing a crime organisation. Dubai Police arrested Mr McGovern in October 2024 and he has remained in custody since. A phone call took place between the two countries' justice ministers last weekend. 'This positive development is further evidence of the excellent criminal justice co-operation between the governments of the UAE and Ireland and highlights our joint dedication to ensuring that criminal prosecutions may be brought against those who attempt to evade justice," read a joint statement from Abdullah Al Nuaimi and Jim O'Callaghan, Irish Minister of Justice, reported the state news agency Wam. Mr McGovern was detained in Dubai in 2024 following the issuing of an Interpol red notice. It is believed he had been contesting the extradition. Interpol described Mr McGovern as 'one of Ireland's most wanted fugitives' and said the red notice was published to support the continuing collaboration between the Irish and UAE authorities. It also confirmed that Mr McGovern is wanted for charges including murder and directing an organised crime group. Additionally, Mr McGovern was one of seven senior figures in the Kinahan group named and placed under sanctions by US authorities. In 2022, the UAE froze assets related to the group. Ireland's justice minister at the time, Helen McEntee, visited the UAE in October last year to sign the extradition and mutual assistance treaties between the countries. It came just after Mr McGovern was detained. In an interview with The National during the visit, Ms McEntee declined to comment on individual cases but said anyone who thinks they can 'inflict misery' at home and then move away and live with impunity is mistaken.
