Pahalgam-Operation Sindoor debate: Opposition slams Amit Shah for 'security lapses'
During a special Lok Sabha debate on the Pahalgam strikes and Operation Sindoor, Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi demanded answers from the government on critical national security concerns and questioned the silence surrounding key details.
Gogoi called on the government to reveal how many Indian fighter jets were downed during Operation Sindoor, stating, "Each jet costs crores of rupees. The nation deserves to know. Our soldiers are being misled, and the truth must come out. The Defence Minister must clarify."
Citing US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that he leveraged trade pressure to broker peace between India and Pakistan, Gogoi asked, "Before whom did Prime Minister Modi surrender? Trump has said it 26 times, we cannot ignore that."
He also slammed the government's narrative of military success, questioning the repeated declarations that India "entered and destroyed terror infrastructure" after the Uri and Pulwama attacks.
"Now again, after Pahalgam, similar statements are being made. If Operation Sindoor is still incomplete and Pakistan remains a threat, then how is this being projected as a success?" he asked.

The Union government's denial of Kerala's rightful allotment of rice and wheat during the Onam season is a deliberate act of vengeance against the people of the State, alleged Communist Party of India (CPI) district secretary K.G. 'The politically enlightened people of Kerala are not ones to forget such injustices easily. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power at the Centre in 2014 under Narendra Modi, Kerala has been consistently targeted,' he said. 'Kerala is not asking for charity, but for its rightful share,' he said. 'Essential food items like rice and wheat meant for the poor through the ration system are a matter of entitlement, not benevolence. The Union food and public distribution minister not only denied the allocation but went a step further by mocking the Kerala delegation's plea at a press conference immediately after receiving their representation.' He urged for widespread resistance against the Centre's move, which he said amounted to starving the people of Kerala during the Onam season. The CPI will remain at the forefront of this struggle, he said. The meeting was presided over by CPI local secretary Suresh Panikkassery. CPI leader C.N. Jayadevan addressed the protest in Manalur. K.K. Valsaraj (Guruvayur), V.S. Sunil Kumar (Thanniam), T.R. Ramesh Kumar (Kodannur), P. Balachandran, MLA, (Ollukkara), V.S. Prince (Amballur), K.P. Sandeep (East Anthikkad), Sheela Vijayakumar (Chazhoor), and Ragesh Kaniyamparambil (Vengidang) also led protests in various locations. V.R. Sunil Kumar, MLA, (Kodungallur) and K.S. Jaya (North Padiyoor) inaugurated the demonstrations in their respective constituencies. The CPI held torchlight processions and protest dharnas in over 100 locations across all constituencies in the district, as part of the coordinated mass agitation.

New Delhi: India is set to host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, reinforcing its commitment to democratising Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the public good, the Parliament was informed on Wednesday. This landmark event aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making technology accessible to all and leveraging AI to tackle real-world challenges across healthcare, education, agriculture, climate, and governance, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told the Lok Sabha. The IndiaAI mission, which prioritises accountability, safety, equity, and the defence of privacy and human rights, is at the core of India's AI strategy. According to the statement, one of the main highlights is the creation of native Large and Small Language Models using Indian datasets. Currently, startups such as Sarvam AI, Soket AI, Gnani AI, and Gan AI are developing foundational models that are suited to the linguistic and cultural diversity of India. According to the statement, these models will be open-source, allowing other startups to create locally tailored applications. According to Minister Vaishnaw, to support scalable innovation, the government is also enhancing AI compute capacity by ensuring GPU infrastructure access and expanding the AIKosh Datasets Platform, which currently hosts over 1,000 datasets and 208 AI models, including Text-to-Speech tools in Indian languages. Additionally, the mission is funding 30 AI-based applications addressing public interest areas like health, climate, and governance.
