Injury-Depleted Diamondbacks Place Ildemaro Vargas on IL, Give James McCann First Start This Season

The injury-depleted Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno and placed infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the 10-day injured list with a right foot fracture before Wednesday's series final against the Chicago White Sox.
Vargas suffered a broken fifth metatarsal when he was hit by a pitch from Mike Vasil in the second inning of Arizona's 4–1 win Tuesday night. He is batting .286 with one home run and four RBIs in 10 games.
Catcher James McCann was playing in his first major league game of the season Wednesday, starting behind the plate. The 35-year-old signed with Arizona on Monday following his release from the Atlanta Braves. McCann signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released Sunday. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs.
McCann, who is in his 12th season in the majors, was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18), and RBIs (60). He has a .241 career batting average with 92 homers and 373 RBIs in 917 games with the Tigers, White Sox, Mets, and Orioles.
'I'm glad he's here,' manager Torey Lovullo said. 'I've admired him from across the field through a couple of his organizations.'
The Diamondbacks remain without center fielder Corbin Carroll. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year went on the injured list retroactive to Saturday with a chip fracture in his left wrist, and a timeline for his return is unknown. Carroll hasn't played since a pitch hit him in the left hand last Wednesday in Toronto.
Infielder Eugenio Suarez was still out of the lineup Wednesday after being hit on the hand by a pitch from Shane Smith on Monday.
First baseman Josh Naylor returned after injuring his shoulder on a swing Monday and sitting out Tuesday.

Pacquiao ‘hungry' for comeback after four-year layoff

LOS ANGELES: Manny Pacquiao said Wednesday that his lengthy layoff from boxing has reignited his passion for the sport as he prepares for next month's world welterweight title comeback against Mario Barrios. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The 46-year-old Filipino boxing icon faces World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Barrios in Las Vegas on July 19, four years after his last fight ended in defeat. Pacquiao has reunited with long-time veteran trainer Freddie Roach for next month's title tilt, and spoke to journalists on Wednesday as he worked out at the Hall of Famer's Wild Card gym in Hollywood. 'Four years rest has been good for me,' Pacquiao said after showing off some impressive hand speed in an open pads session. 'I've been in boxing for so many decades, so it's good for my body to rest for four years. 'Now I'm back, I'm hungry to fight again. I'm hungry to fight in a big fight like this. To work hard, have discipline, everything like that.' 'I've missed boxing. I feel like the passion, the fire in my eyes, working hard — it's still there.' Pacquiao said while his recovery times were now slightly longer, he had not noticed any drop off in his physical conditioning. 'I'm fast, I can move like I did before. I can run in the mountains with the young boxers, so I'm happy,' he said. 'I'm enjoying this training camp. There's a couple of adjustments for bodily recovery. We have to control the body, give my body time to rest and recover.' Pacquiao, who won 12 world titles in eight different weight classes during a glittering professional career that began in 1995, refused to be drawn on whether his comeback next month would be 'one and done' or just the first step of a full-fledged return to the sport. 'It's hard to say,' he said when asked about future bouts. 'Now I'm back so one at a time, after this fight we can plan whatever we want.' For some in boxing, however, Pacquiao's return to the ring represents an unnecessary risk. British promoter Eddie Hearn was the latest to cast doubt on the wisdom of the Filipino's comeback earlier this month, predicting that the 30-year-old Barrios will be 'too young and too strong' for Pacquiao. Pacquiao smiled on Wednesday when asked for his response to Hearn's remarks. 'Just watch on July 19th,' he said. 'It will be a good fight.'

San Antonio Spurs Add Dylan Harper at No. 2 to Join Wembanyama, Fox, Castle on Youthful Roster

The San Antonio Spurs selected Rutgers point guard Dylan Harper with the second pick in the NBA draft on Wednesday night. Harper joins a burgeoning roster that includes All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and DeAaron Fox, rookie of the year Stephon Castle, and veterans Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, and Keldon Johnson. Harper was regarded as the second-best prospect available behind Duke's Cooper Flagg, who was selected first by the Dallas Mavericks. The son of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, Harper averaged 19.4 points, 4.0 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in his lone season at Rutgers. Harper joins a backcourt that already has point guards in Fox and Castle, but the Spurs had no hesitation selecting the 6-foot-6 guard. San Antonio fans have already embraced Harper, with his mural being unveiled this week by the same restaurant that painted Wembanyama's image months before the Spurs were awarded the No. 1 pick in 2023. 'It's just very surreal,' said Harper, who saw the painting on Instagram. San Antonio also held the No. 14 pick, which they acquired from Atlanta in 2022, as well as the 38th selection in the second round.
