KESUMA aims for 1 million SKSPS contributors by year-end

GEORGE TOWN: The Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) is confident of meeting its target of one million active contributors to the Self‑Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) by the end of this year. Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said more than 800,000 active contributors nationwide are currently covered under the scheme, which offers various benefits in the event of unforeseen incidents. 'With continued efforts by Perkeso and other strategic partners actively running nationwide awareness campaigns, I am confident we can achieve the one‑million‑contributor target by year‑end,' he told reporters after officiating a Perkeso engagement session with non‑Muslim house of worship workers in Penang today. Sim noted that many self‑employed individuals, such as hawkers, e‑hailing drivers, farmers, fishermen, and non‑Muslim house of worship operators, are still unaware that they are eligible for the scheme. He stressed that SKSPS is crucial for self‑employed individuals in the B40 and M40 income groups, who often lack any form of protection in the event of accidents or disability. 'Expanding awareness of the scheme is also a main government agenda to ensure that all Malaysians, regardless of their occupation, receive adequate protection,' said Sim. At today's programme, 200 individuals serving at non‑Muslim houses of worship across Penang received sponsored SKSPS contributions, an initiative to encourage greater participation from the community in the government‑backed scheme. The minister said the scheme provides a range of benefits, including protection in the event of accidents, medical assistance, rehabilitation treatment, compensation payments, and pensions for contributors and their dependents. He added that the Penang event is part of a nationwide roadshow and awareness campaign to boost participation in Perkeso's self‑employment scheme by the end of the year. - Bernama

Ringgit seen holding gains next week on softer Fed signals

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — The ringgit is expected to trade between 4.25 and 4.26 against the US dollar next week, following weaker-than-expected United States (US) Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) data for July, which may prompt the US Federal Reserve (Fed) to consider an interest rate cut at its September meeting. The NFP data for July fell short of expectations to just 73,000 jobs, significantly below the consensus estimates of 106,000. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the latest NFP data could boost sentiment for the ringgit, as it increases the expectations that the Fed may reduce the Federal Funds Rate in September. He also noted that NFP figures for the previous two months — May and June — were revised sharply lower, further reinforcing expectations of a potential rate cut. 'Such views were very much aligned with the two dissenters during the last Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which favoured a quarter-point cut. 'The outlook for Fed Fund Rate was the main consideration among the traders as the Fed was seen as indecisive on further monetary policy accommodation during the recent FOMC meeting,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Mohd Afzanizam said the US government's recent decision to impose a reciprocal tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysia-- down from a previous rate of 25 per cent-- could help mitigate the impact. 'This is a welcome move, and there may be room for further negotiations. An improved trade arrangement could prove positive for the ringgit over the medium term,' he added. Furthermore, he believes that the recently announced 13th Malaysia Plan (13th MP) will support the ringgit in the medium to long term. Under the plan, development expenditure has been increased to RM430 billion, which is expected to boost domestic demand and encourage investment activities, ultimately supporting Malaysia's gross domestic product growth. The 13th MP was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on Thursday, with a focus on driving sustainable growth based on value creation across all sectors. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week lower against the greenback, closing at 4.2750/2815 versus 4.2195/2245 previously. However, the local note traded higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit appreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8407/8452 from 2.8529/8565 on Friday the previous week, rose versus the euro to 4.8752/8826 from 4.9507/9566 last week, and gained against the British pound to 5.6208/6293 from 5.6786/6853 previously. Against Asean currencies, the ringgit trended mostly higher. The local note firmed against the Singapore dollar to 3.2907/2960 from 3.2937/2978 at the end of last week, strengthened versus the Thai baht to 13.0058/0319 from 13.0268/0478, and improved against the Philippine peso to 7.35/7.36 from 7.38/7.40 in the preceding week. However, it edged lower versus the Indonesian rupiah to 258.8/259.4 from 258.5/258.9 in the previous week. — Bernama

Ringgit closes lower amid US tariff reduction, 13MP developments

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar today as the dollar strengthened following new tariffs imposed by the US on its trading partners, alongside developments related to the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The US announced today that it is imposing a reduced 19% tariff on Malaysian imports. The tariffs take effect seven days after 12:01am on Aug 1, with goods already in transit granted a seven-day grace period to ease the immediate impact on supply chains. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid noted that despite this positive development, traders remained cautious, and the weakness of the ringgit was somewhat mitigated by the news of the tariff reduction. He said that the reciprocal tariff of 19% on Malaysia means that the impact would be minimised from the previous tariff rates of 25%. 'There could also be an opportunity for Malaysia to continue to discuss and negotiate with the US, and along the way, the country could get an improved deal. 'This could be ringgit-positive in the medium-term,' Afzanizam told Bernama. He emphasised that the 13MP is anticipated to have a positive impact on the ringgit in the mid- to long-term. Under the 13MP, development expenditure has been increased to RM430 billion, which is expected to boost domestic demand and encourage investment activities, ultimately supporting Malaysia's gross domestic product growth. The 13MP was tabled by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on July 31. It is expected to drive sustainable growth based on value creation across all sectors. Of the RM430 billion allocation, Anwar said more than half, or RM227 billion, will be channelled to the economic sector as the main pillar of the country's growth. At 6pm, the local currency fell to 4.2750/4.2815 versus the US dollar from yesterday's close of 4.2650/4.2730. Meanwhile, at the close, the ringgit ended higher against major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8407/2.8452 from 2.8443/2.8498 at the close yesterday, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.6208/5.6293 from 5.6426/5.6532, and gained against the euro to 4.8752/4.8826 from 4.8766/4.8857 previously. The ringgit was mixed against regional peers. It improved against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.8/259.4 from yesterday's 259.1/259.7 and edged higher versus the Thai baht to 13.0058/13.0319 from 13.0448/13.0753. The local currency fell against the Philippine peso to 7.35/7.36 from 7.31/7.33 and weakened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2907/3.2960 from 3.2889/3.2953.
