Magic Weekend defeat for Warrington Wolves - post-match reaction
DEFENDING champions Wigan Warriors proved to be too much for a depleted Warrington Wolves side to overcome at Magic Weekend.
However, it was not for lack of trying as they came agonisingly close to completing a remarkable late fightback.
In the end, they were a missed conversion away from forcing golden point after Stefan Ratchford missed the goal from Jake Thewlis' second try, which narrowed the scores to 22-20
With a raft of key players including George Williams, Danny Walker, Matty Ashton and Marc Sneyd absent, a long afternoon looked to be in store for The Wire after they conceded two tries in as many first-half minutes to Jai Field and Bevan French but to their credit, they fought their way back.
Jake Thewlis touched down before the break and when Rodrick Tai followed him over the line just after half time, Warrington had narrowed the gap to just two points.
However, Abbas Miski and Adam Keighran touched down to get Wigan back out to arm's length and a seemingly safe margin.
Once Joe Philbin rumbled over and Thewlis touched down for his second, however, the comeback was on but Burgess' boys fell just short.

Javier Tebas talks Madrid derby, relationship with Perez, Real Madrid TV – ‘He wants to fire me'
La Liga president Javier Tebas has addressed several key issues surrounding Spanish football, offering strong opinions on Real Madrid, president Florentino Perez, and the ongoing scheduling and broadcasting disputes in the league. In a wide-ranging conversation, Tebas did not shy away from calling out what he sees as fundamental problems affecting the domestic competition. Advertisement Tebas voiced his frustration with external competitions disrupting the La Liga calendar, especially as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are both set to participate in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. When asked about the potential of a Madrid derby to open the 2025–26 season, Tebas was firm in his response. 'An Atletico-Real Madrid match on Matchday 1 is impossible,' he said. 'This isn't like the Super Cup. 'That fixture is far too important for broadcasters. When the time comes, we'll make decisions with the relevant bodies. 'But we can't keep changing our league schedule for events we don't agree with or that harm Spanish football. We have to respect the collective bargaining agreement with AFE.' Relationship with Florentino Perez The La Liga chief made it clear that his relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is practically non-existent due to their opposing views on how football should be run. Tebas and Perez's relationship is strained. (Photo by Gonzalo) 'With the club, relations are as they should be. We can broadcast their games, and we do it well,' Tebas stated. 'But with Florentino Perez, there is no relationship. We're on completely different paths. 'He supports a model based on elitism and an oligarchic vision—the Super League. I don't support that. It's not about club management, it's about how the competition is structured.' Tebas even went so far as to accuse Perez of using personal influence to attempt to oust him. 'He keeps saying over lunch that he wants to fire me and claims the CSD agrees with him. I've filed countless complaints with the TAD because of him.' On Real Madrid TV Tebas also commented on the recurring controversy surrounding Real Madrid TV, which has often published videos critical of La Liga referees. Advertisement He drew attention to the timing of their media output, suggesting it was more strategic than principled. 'Barcelona complains once or twice a season. Real Madrid complains every week. 'What stood out to me is that once they were no longer in the title race, those videos stopped. If their goal was to denounce the Liga Negreira case, why did they stop?' Tebas questioned. Source: AS

Warrington Wolves' Super League task explained as season resumes
Warrington Wolves resume their Super League campaign on Saturday after their heartbreaking Challenge Cup Final loss (Image: Neil Ashurst/P&B Pictures) IT'S time to move on… The pain of Saturday's Challenge Cup Final defeat will no doubt take a while to fully disappear for Warrington Wolves, but it must now be suppressed. Having been given two days off following their agonising Wembley loss to Hull KR, the players are back in training today to prepare for the resumption of their Super League campaign. Advertisement And with the season at its halfway point, they are not in a position for a malaise to set in given they sit eighth in the table, two points shy of the play-off places. In losing seven times so far this season, they have already been beaten as many times as they were in the entirety of the 2024 regular season. Here is how the table looks ahead of Round 14... While Hull KR and Wigan Warriors have started to pull away at the top, the sides in the play-off pack are relatively bunched up – despite being down in eighth, Warrington can close to within four points of Leeds in third with a win at Headingley on Saturday. Advertisement What could count against them, however, is their points difference which is significantly worse than all of the sides currently above them in the table. What is coming up for Warrington Wolves? Sam Burgess' side have 14 games of their Super League regular season remaining, starting with a trip to high-flying Leeds Rhinos on Saturday. That is one of eight away games The Wire still have to play, including four in a row through July and into August due to pitch repair work at The Halliwell Jones Stadium. Indeed, after back-to-back home fixtures against Huddersfield Giants and Hull FC to finish June, they will not play at home again until Wigan Warriors' visit on Friday, August 8. After losing last year's Challenge Cup Final to Wigan Warriors, Warrington had a much better platform from which to attack what remained of the Super League campaign. After 13 rounds of 2024, they sat fourth in the table, two points shy of then leaders St Helens with a four-point cushion inside the play-off spots. They lost the game immediately after the final as they were beaten 25-14 by Salford Red Devils, but they then won 11 of the 13 matches that followed. The 22 points they gained kept them in contention for a top-two spot until the final round of the season, but they were forced to settle for third before beating St Helens in a thrilling play-off eliminator and then losing in the semi-finals at Hull KR. Advertisement Gaining the same number of points this time around would get them to 34 – six shy of what they achieved last year but perhaps more importantly given their current situation, a total that has always been comfortably enough for play-off qualification in recent years. Within the current top-six system that has been in place for the past three seasons, 30 points has been enough to secure a play-off berth every year except last year, when Catalans Dragons reached that figure but lost out on points difference. To reach 30 points, Warrington will need to win nine of their remaining 14 matches.

Golden State Warriors jersey history - No. 14 - Claude Overton (1952-53)
Golden State Warriors jersey history - No. 14 - Claude Overton (1952-53) The Golden State Warriors have had over 600 players don the more than 60 jersey numbers used by their players over the more than 75 years of existence the team has enjoyed in its rich and storied history. Founded in 1946 during the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- a precursor league of the NBA) era, the team has called home the cities of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland, and even San Diego. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Warriors Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. For this article, we begin with the seventh of 13 players who wore the No. 14 jersey for the Warriors. That player would be Golden State guard alum Claude Overton. After ending his college career at East Central University, Overton was picked up with the 53rd overall selection of the 1950 NBA draft by the (defunct) Washington Capitols. The Temple, Oklahoma native would later join the (then) Philadelphia (now, Golden State) Warriors instead in 1952 after two seasons playing in other domestic leagues. His stay with the team would span a single season, his last in the NBA. During his time suiting up for the Warriors, Overton wore only jersey No. 14 and put up 3.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.
