BBC News29-07-2025
Head coach Russell Martin has been speaking to the media prior to the second leg of Rangers' Champions League second-round qualifier at Panathinaikos. Here are the key lines:Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane have not travelled with the squad, but Cyriel Dessers and Djeidi Gassama are fit and ready to start.Martin hopes Aasgaard will be available for Saturday's trip to Motherwell but says "to risk him this early on [in the season] would be crazy".The Rangers boss is convinced his team "will be better" than they were in the first leg. "We'll have to be," he adds. On how he will approach the second leg, Martin says: "You have to try and win every single game, that has to be the mentality of our team".He is also demanding his players "display courage, discipline, aggression in the right areas, and intensity".And the Ibrox boss is "really confident" his players can handle a hostile atmosphere. On reports linking Rangers with a move for Tottenham's Mikey Moore, Martin would not give anything away but says the youngster is a "really good player".

Antman revels in 'crazy' start to Ibrox career

"When I heard Rangers were interested, I didn't need that much convincing. I had already pretty much made up my mind."If Oliver Antman's debut on Tuesday night didn't whet the appetite for Rangers fans, then the attacker's drive to be a success at the club certainly who signed on Monday from Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles, started the 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen and assisted Djeidi Gassama on an impressive debut as he slotted in before Saturday's Premiership game with Dundee, the Finland international said: "Yeah, pretty crazy, to be honest. I haven't really had time to think about everything."Yesterday I had a day off, I could think a little bit about what's happened. But there was stuff to do with apartments and stuff like that, but it's been a crazy few days."And pretty much straight away when I came, I had a game to play. So I'm happy that it went well."To straight away play in a Champions League qualifier was a big thing for me. I've never played there before, it is a big part of why I'm here."I want to create a lot of chances, make a lot of crosses, take defenders on and just create a lot. "That's what I did in Holland, and that's what I want to do here, more of that."The 23-year-old is well aware of the standards expected at the Ibrox club, and hopes playing in an environment that demands consistent success will make him a better player."I think that will also help me a lot mentally because I have not been in a club where you actually need to win every single game," he added."I think it will improve me a lot mentally, and yeah, it's going to be a nice challenge, and I'm looking forward to it."

Arsenal left facing Eberechi Eze issue if fresh Rodrygo transfer plan fails

Arsenal are keen to add another winger to their squad before the window closes amid links with Real Madrid star Rodrygo and Crystal Palace wideman Eberechi Eze but there's a decision for Gunners chiefs to make Arsenal have been left with a decision to make as they mull over moves for BOTH Rodrygo and Eberechi Eze. The Gunners are keen to add a new winger to Mikel Arteta's squad before the transfer window closes next month. ‌ Crystal Palace star Eze has emerged as a major target. He has a £68m release clause written into his contract at Selhurst Park, albeit that only remains active for another week. Meanwhile, Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has been linked with a move to the Emirates. He seemed sure to leave the Spanish giants earlier this summer having fallen out of favour under Xabi Alonso. ‌ Recent reports from The Times suggested that Arsenal were willing to make a move for the Brazilian but only on loan. As it stands, Real have not confirmed whether they would be willing to facilitate that sort of agreement. Should Real not be open to a loan move, that could see the Gunners turn their attention back to Eze - but they would have to get a move on. ‌ The England star's release clause is believed to expire on August 15, after which time Palace could demand a higher fee for his services. Speaking recently, Palace boss Oliver Glasner remained tight-lipped on his star winger's future but did confirm he would take part in the Community Shield clash with Liverpool. He said: "He will play on Sunday, definitely and Marc [Guehi] as well - he will captain the team." Arsenal icon Ray Parlour is convinced that Eze will eventually become an Arsenal player. 'I think there might be one more signing. I don't know how much money they've got left or whether the rules as well they've got to look at, but if there is enough money, Eze would be [a great signing]." ‌ Speaking on talkSPORT, he added: "He'd be [playing] off the left there, maybe, but you've got to have options. You've got to have lots of players who can just come in and come out of the team. And we all know that you've got to have depth. ‌ 'A lot of depth if you're playing Champions League football, the FA Cup, so many games. That's why Norgaard would be good for Arsenal, because he can come in certain games, he's got the experience. 'And he knows he's going to be second fiddle, but he can still play a big part for Arsenal in certain areas. So I think Eze would be the icing on the cake.'

Management can wait as Arfield 'desperate to keep having fun'

Midfielder Scott Arfield wants to delay a move into management for as long as possible as he continues to relish life on the pitch at Falkirk. The 36-year-old started his career at the Bairns and played for Huddersfield, Burnley and Rangers among others before returning to John McGlynn's side in February and helping them to Championship title Saturday's Premiership trip to face Livingston, the former Canada international said: "I'm on my B licence now but the move into management is getting further away if anything."When I was 16 I told myself I was going to play until I'm 40. That's all I've ever said and I'm 37 this year. "Now I'm getting closer to 40, it's not so much that I'm desperate to play until I'm 40. I'm just desperate to keep having fun. "I still love the thought of being a football player and everything that comes with it."I just love being on a football pitch, trying to give people moments and rewarding myself for all the hard work through the years. When that feeling dies, I'm out of here."
